RE: Thoughts on Windows 10?
Windows 7/8/8.1 are also now running the telemetry and data gathering service, it was pushed earlier this year through Windows update (KB3022345).

You can at least disable the service and prevent it from running at startup:
How to disable the Diagnostics Tracking Service in Windows

I checked on my Windows 7 SP1 install and sure enough it was running.

Since Microsoft have recently announced that they will stop giving detailed patch notes for Windows updates, that probably means they'll push more of those.

RE: Thoughts on Windows 10?
I upgraded my desktop from Win 7 Pro to Win 10. No problems. I actually really like Windows 10.

I also have a Surface 3 running Win 10. No issues with the OS.

Is there any way to block the telemetry stuff on a protocol/port level on your router? I don't really care, but that would be a solution.

You need a seperate piece of hardware running a different operating system to act as a firewall between the Windows 10(or "updated" 7 or 8) device to intercept and block that shit. You may need a heavier duty router and a much deeper knowledge of how networking works. You can probably get a head start though by blocking the specific ports and domains used at the router, but you likely will also need to turn of upnp at the router which may break things you either need or like.

It's ok. Been using it for a week or so. I think it's faster than 8. No funny quirks.

RE: Thoughts on Windows 10?
Fuck windows 10. Its built like a shady used car. It worked well for a few days and then started to freeze once every 2-3 days, then once a day, then 2-3 times a day. Now I've installed windows 7 on a separate partition and am going to let that shit rest until the rampaging nerds on the message boards post that there are solutions.

That is my desktop.

My laptop, which is not fancy at all seems to tolerate it just fine.

I have no desire to get windows 10 until about 2017.

Hopefully most of the bugs will be worked out, so I can get a good custom PC built with it.

I'm probably going to make the move soon. Will have to sooner or later.

I only keep Windows around for playing games. If I didn't have so many of the things, I'd stick to either OSX or Linux.

Steam on linux (osx too) is getting pretty good.

I'm optimistic that enough of my game catalogue will transfer over that I'm sticking with osx, linux, and steamOS from here on out. I have no doubt that team fortress 2 will still be serious business in five years.

Win10 is rather buggy and at times a complete pain in the ass to deal with, but I'm not made of money to afford Mac, so hopefully the rest of these bugs will be eliminated in the near future.

Windows 10 forced the upgrade on my computer...
some bugs but nothing mayor.

W in WAMP stands for Windows, so it's not for Linux ;-)

But yes, Apache + MySQL + PHP work perfectly on Linux.

Classic Shell makes Win10 usable for me:

http://www.classicshell.net/

However I am not installing Win10 on any daily use computers, just a tablet I use occasionally that came with the awful Windows 8. So the bottom line is, unless you're stuck with 8 for some reason, 7 is a better bet. But that's just my own opinion.

If you can avoid Windows 10, do so. It's horrible for privacy and they're introducing a subscription model too.

When security updates for Windows 7 stops on Jan. 14, 2020 I'll switch or already have switched to using Linux + WINE to run all my Windows programs.

I agree with this. Avoid it if you can. I have been told that Windows 10 is allegedly loaded with a bunch of spyware that Microsoft uses to keep tabs on its users. My two year old Dell laptop just updated from Windows 8 to Windows 10 and it now runs horribly. It has a difficult time loading web pages and it has to be refreshed often. It also does a poor job of loading websites that have a lot of ads. I never had any of these issues with Windows 8.

The problem with this is that they already rolled out updates for Win7 which infiltrate the same privacy-spyware-features to your system like in Win8/10. Dodgy

Is it possible to get 8.1 to act like 7 than? Its a time waste looking for programs that only appear on the app display rather than the normal desktop, and I am very used to the start up bar.

RE: Thoughts on Windows 10?
I might have mentioned this but half the retarded people that work on the computers I'm in charge of went ahead and upgraded to windows 10.

It was time for me to refresh my PC so deleted everything and installed windows 10 today while it's still free.

Only gripe so far is that it took some 7 hours to install.

If you're trying to install old programs and they don't work you can right click on them, go to properties and go to the compatibility tab, then click the obvious shit and yeah, they'll work.

Life is so complicated now. What happened to the days where you could drag a bitch into your cave and make a family.

RE: Thoughts on Windows 10?
I have nothing but the deepest hatred for that bubbly, videogame-interface looking Windows 10.

If I have to scroll through a bunch of hieroglyphs just to log onto the goddamned computer, I'm shutting it off.

Recently my girlfriends computer had a problem with whatever program. I clicked on the equivalent of the "Start" button and was inundated with an explosion of symbols.

How is this:

[Image: windows-10-136400747236110401-150929103327.jpg]

Any better than this?:

I used to play computer games competitively and I do not like where Windows 10 is going. You can't shut off mouse acceleration. For everyone who knows what that is, it's a very big deal. Mac computers are basically unusable for me.

It's hard enough putting up with smartphones and no I do not want one as a computer.

When the time comes I will convert over to Linux and use wine to run windows programs. Other than that I will continue to use Windows 7 until hell freezes over.

“I have a very simple rule when it comes to management: hire the best people from your competitors, pay them more than they were earning, and give them bonuses and incentives based on their performance. That’s how you build a first-class operation.”
― Donald J. Trump

Classic Shell dude!

Also I don't think you'll get Win7 to load on a Surface, I've tried on a Pro 3. It lacks a traditional BIOS, but luckily Win7 64bit has a UEFI loader. The problem lies in AFTER you get it loaded, there are no drivers for the touch screen or any of the Surface specific hardware!
