Problem with that is while the exchange will be in our favor, inflation will ravage the country, food will be more expensive, and thing probably won't get a lot cheaper than they are now. For example the currency exchange is 3.8 to 1 right now, but things are more expensive than they were two years ago so it's no cheaper. I went on hostelworld.com and in dollar terms the hostels cost the same, if not a buck more per night.

Yeah inflation is running ridiculously high in Argentina. About 20 something percent.

I lived there in 2008 and when I went back in about 9 months later in 2009 some things had even doubled in price

Historically there's some type of crisis in Argentina every ten years or so.

There are other economic headwinds that Arg faces that weren't covered in that article.

Im in AR now, and I kept some of my receipts from my trip here last year. I brought them with me because i was interested to see the price changes. I've seen some costs rise (restaurants, imports, drinks at bars) and others stay the same (taxis, food at grocery).

I think overall, a better exchange rate is in our favor because it takes time for prices to rise. They usually lag behind. Plus the government imposes price caps on some things (such as food)

Argentina now charges a reciprocity fee of $130 if you have U.S. passport and fly into Buenos Aires. Something to keep in mind.

How is the latest crime situation in BA? I hear it's been going downhill ever since the last crisis... Various online forums claim that everyone (locals or gringos) in BA gets mugged/robbed/express-kidnapped at least once...

I met a guy in Colombia who was kidnapped and rob by gunpoint in his apartment in B.A last year.

I was only there for a few days but I never felt sketched out. Cordoba is definitely safe.

BsAs is pretty sketchy on the crime front.

Most of the locals I talked to have been robbed at some point. One girl I was dating told me about how her female friend got mugged by 6 little girls. Who were 8 or so. They all surrounded her and started begging then started grabbing her bringing her to the ground where they took her wallet and phone and handed it to some boy near by who took off running.

I also met two young dudes from Canada when I was in BsAs in Feb and they told about how they got robbed at gun point 2 days before at 5pm sitting in a cafe in Palermo. Two guys walk up and point a gun at them and ask for their money. They give them their money and the guys run off.

Other local girl told me that she was walking down the street in the middle of the day listening to her mp3 player. Some teen boy runs up and starts grabbing on her searching what pocket the mp3 player is in, finds it and runs off.

Now 4th story, I met this Aussie chic in Feb at a bar and she invites me to go with her to the club afterwards with her female friend and two local Arg guys they had recently met. I go with them and they get a VIP table. I was 100% getting laid by this girl. Until at the end of the night her purse got stolen by some random skank who one of the Argentine guys had picked up at the club. The bouncers saw her grab the purse and leave with the Argentine guy but they didn't think anything about it because they were with our group.

That's exactly the impression I get from Argentina... That those things are completely random and unpredictable. And it's easy to let your guards down until something like that happens to you... That whole "Paris of South America" thing can really fool you... And what's up with that "bird pooh" scam? It seems like Argentinians can get very creative when it comes to crime...

there is a lot of petty, bag snatching kind of crime
but also shootings.
but it seems safer than parts of brazil, and many us cities...
at least main areas a tourist would visit.
the less foreign and the less well off you appear to be, the better.
