Just discovered Varg recently. German metal. Their album "Guten Tag" is really good, the singer from Korpiklaani is featured on one track. Their latest album "Ende alle Lügen" is pretty good. The first song I heard from them was "Rottkäppchen", a twisted take on little red riding hood.

On the topic of Korpiklaani, another Finnish metal band I've been really into lately is Turisas. Very neomasculine band, singing songs from history and mythology about Vikings.
Their music is very dramatic and theatrical, in the spirit of classic metal bands liek Iron Maiden. One notable difference is the electric violin and other unconventional instruments they use.
Probably my favourite song of theirs, a rock-opera about the fall of the Byzantine empire:

I have not parsed the entire thread but I hope you metal fans are familiar with Amon Amarth. They not only deliver bone crushing Viking metal but their songs are at the same time beautifully composed and full of interesting lyrics. Some of my favorites but I recommend you guys check them out in detail:

The first couple albums from Burzum, Mayhem, and Darkthrone are essential for the genre. For newer stuff, i like the more atmospheric approach by bands like Drudkh from Ukraine (especially the first two albums) or Summoning from Austria.

Yeah, as a true fan of course I have seen that interview. But hell - those guys are the proverbial viking headbangers in MY book. And if they were born a millenium earlier they'd be busy raping and pillaging. Aaaaah - the good old days.....

It's so true what they've said though, you can't define genres of music by lyrical content. Amon Amarth are awesome, but I would describe them as black metal.
On another note, a little-known Black metal/Folk metal band I've recently discovered are Leshak, from Russia.

Anyone listen to Amon Amarth's latest album "Jomsviking" yet? Concept album following a murderer who joins up with the Jomsvikings, thought to be a predecessor to the knightly orders. Great stuff on there.
Cannot talk about heavy metal without a mention to the great German speed metal factories. The Pounding metal bass and drums the screeching attack guitars and high pitched vocals create the perfect environment for headbanging awesomeness!
