I first made a Tinder in Hong Kong, and I got a ton of matches very quickly. I made a tinder maybe two or three days before leaving Hong Kong after a month+ visit. I regret not knowing about Tinder (or caring about Tinder rather) when I was in HK this summer, it would have been a God sent (I was getting my weiner wet anyway, so not the worst trip).


The nightlife in HK is pretty bad for a city of its stature. I love LKF, but it gets boring going to the same place every night.

I went to TST and Wanchai (heck, I worked in Wanchai), they're fun for their own reasons but not really to pick-up for me (if you're into prostitutes then Wanchai is great).

It looks like this is more a HK thread than a Guangzhou thread.

I'm moving either to Guangzhou or Taipei and will travel there in the coming weeks.

Anyone in Guangzhou? Any clubs, bars or malls to check out? Luckily I have some old fuck buddies who turned into good friends who got married and live down there. They should be able to show me around, but looking for more boots on the ground info. I will be staying near JianShe Lu, which is one of the main drags. Probably stay at a simple place like JinJiang Hotels. 250 yuan a night is doable for a week. I want to feel the place out. Maybe do 9 days so I get both weekends.

Probably right after the Spring Festival. Feb 12 or so til the 20th.

I can highly recommend the Hanting Quanji (全季酒店（广州天河北路店）) at No.6-8 Tianhe North Road, Tianhe District, Guangzhou 510620, China (广州 天河区 天河北路6-8号 ，天河北路与广州大道中交汇).

I've stayed there a few times as I found it good value that's close enough to many of the places I frequented, no more than 10rmb (starting fare) per ride to some. I checked your dates and it'd be 339rmb/night:

Protip: Mainland Chinese use ctrip.com for a lot of their flight/hotel purchases in China, Hong Kong, and possibly others though I've only used it for those, it's almost always the best fare. The rating system is quite helpful as well. You'll note this particular hotel got 95%. Only problem is switching between the Chinese and English isn't seamless and you may have to do some digging vs just clicking the other language at the top.

Thanks Lian. I'm already fluent in Chinese with spoken and listening and can read the newspaper fairly well. So mostly just trying to find big Chinese city in the south with good weather and better air (right now I have my air purifier going full blast since I live in North China).

Some look fun and are 5 star or 4.5 star rating, but when I see the photo its packed with small tables. Not what I want. More open floor plan, can walk up to people and say hello, chat people up.

Thanks for the Hanting rec. Ive stayed at there places a few times. I prefer Jinjiang. I find the hotel, beds and service to be good enough for the price. I have a VIP card with them so its 10% off, plus its 100 yuan cheaper than Hanting. Mostly need the room for sleep and sex. Do Hantings have a gym? If that's the case, might be worth the extra 100 yuan a night.

Will you be in Guangzhou in the middle of February?

Perry's is what you are looking for.
There's three of them in GZ (Tianhe, Taojin, Haizhu), cheap student type bar, well mixed youngish crowd of local Chinese and foreigners. Easy to meet new people, get talking and pull girls home.

Going to Hong Kong for a few days prior to entering China in March. What private accommodation options would you guys recommend for HK? Best value/location for money. I'm looking on AirBnB and it seems that the cheapest studios go for around 35 USD/night and tend to be in Kowloon, old, and with complaints about cockroaches.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, cheers.

35 to 80 is a lot of difference.
For a cheap hotel I would recommend hotels in Kowloon like in mongkok. 3 star hotels there are around 60 dollars in weekdays.

You have similar prices to the Chungking Mansions, but the building has much more natural light and air. Dusty but not grimy, at least by HK standards.
A few Indians with shops the second floor but otherwise Chinese occupied. Tailors' workshops, some private apartments.
I found a room with a double bed, window on Nathan Road, and en suite bathroom for 200 HKD.
Only about 5 paces of floor space, though. No desk, no fridge, shared kettle in the hall.
Windowless room in the same place was going for 150 HKD, as I recall.
There's a "checkpoint" after midnight where you fill in any nonsense you like in the guard's ledger. It's mostly for show, and they never ask for ID.
This was around two years ago .

Haha the legendary Chungking Mansions! Props that you actually stayed at a place like that. I read that those "mansion" towers on Nathan Road often do not allow you to bring guests in though, is there truth in that?

Think I might have to shell out some extra for a slightly half-decent place on the island, maybe around Causeway Bay. Not super thrilled about staying at the "little Islamabad"s on Nathan Rd.

Chunking Mansion is aweomse, I stayed there a number of times while on a few trips to Hong Kong, back in 2012. Actually had a few different 'hotels' in there, and could always take a girl up stairs. A long wait for the elevators sometimes though.

There are some Indian restaurants on the 3-5th floor there, some real good food can be found in a sort of living room kind of restaurants.

Any simple check of a major online travel search engine such as Kayak will show that there is no need to consider those 'hotels' anymore.

2 weeks ago I stayed at a well-appointed 4 star hotel in Kowloon for 60 dollars a night. Advance booking on Ctrip.com or use of Orbitz/Cheaptickets frequent 20% off coupons will help more.

It's easy to get these rates on HK Island as well, but I wanted to be closer to the airport.

If you mean the security at the building entrance, they're basically asleep at the wheel.

Can't contrast Mirador and Chungking enough. The Chungking Mansions are like Mordor with curry.
If you wanted drugs, I suppose it'd be the place to go. Just wander around and wait for someone to hiss "hashish" in your ear.

Good value for money if you are on a tight budget.
I was also impressed by how well they use the space, you wouldn't expect a room of only a few m² to be so comfortable.

Normally i wouldn't fuss about paying for a few nights at a hotel, but currently with the Canadian Peso we are looking at some pretty steep prices for even the most budget hotels. I did manage to find a couple of decent Airbnbs though in the $60 CAD range. Your standard 8 sqm room with a bath/toilet combo sort of thing.

It's funny how many RVF members have passed through Chungking. No wonder the building's got legendary status. Some of you guys prolly slept in the same beds. Now imagine that.

Damn that Chungking mansion looks pretty rough hahaha.

I'll be in Hong Kong next week over Chinese New Year. As someone else mentioned you can pick up a nice studio apartment (not just one of those boxes) a stones throw from LKF/SOHO for about $90 USD/night on AirBNB. For me it's worth it for the convenience.

Am planning a couple of nights in HK in Mar. Was hoping to stay super close to LKF or Wan Chai if possible for some easy closing. Airbnb has plenty but am unsure which of them are cool with bringing a girl back. Any that you guys have stayed in / have some positive experience with? Looking to stay somewhat classy while not busting the bank.

Also, isin't Kowloon too far from the action? Or is it still a good place to stay if I want to do the usual action and bounce from LKF / Wan Chai?

Respect for the you guys who roughed it at the Chungking! That picture looks quite hard core ;-)

I’ll also be in HK in Mid-March for a 10 day spring break type of holiday, going to do a mix of Air BnB, mini hotels and hostels to distribute out the costs of lodging in the area.

I’d imagine theres no issue bringing back a girl to an Airbnb if you rented the whole apt.. probably a bit trickier to rent a room with the landlord in house (but not impossible). In LKF/Central/SoHo you’d be looking at least $80/nt for the former and $40-50 for the latter.

One question for the larger group – what’s the dress code in HK? From reading TRs some dudes opt to suit up or at least wear a blazer but I’m more of a casual cat. Does dressing down limit your options in HK?
