When this show came out I seemed to be the only one of my family and friends that could not stand it.

I had a gut feeling of disgust about the males in the show.I never thought it was funny and it never made sense to me..Jennifer Anston though that's another story.

I hate to use the unmanly word of creepy but thats what I thought Friends was.....creepy.

You know when you are bluepill and you catch a glimps of the matrix, you saw it but you didn't know what you were looking at...something was not right and you can't put it into words ....that's Friends to me back in the 90s

I had the same feeling after I saw Forest Gump at the movies.Me and my mate walked out of the cinema talking about it, thinking the bloke got fucked over by the chick.

I give Schimmmer credit for holding out for more money but that's it.

No way was it even on par with Seinfeld.Now that show was GOLD Jerry, GOLD.

I had this experience with Everybody Loves Raymond. I could see that the wife was a horrible bitch. He was trying to be good to her and be a good guy, and all she could ever do was bitch at him. I identified with him with my own marriage. Like you said, I could see something was wrong, but I was blue pill, so I didn't understand.

Once I took the red pill, I realized he's the perfect example of the Average Frustrated Chump, whose wife has shit tested him and beta-fied him into oblivion.

Interestingly enough, that ending caught so much shit from the audience that they released an "official alternate" ending that didn't involve Robin.

Even the average, plugged in audience member had the same problems with it: their facebook page was swarmed with people saying that Ted was a likeable, earnest guy who deserved much better than Robin. Hell a lot of them even called her slutty and coldhearted.

Saw some of it while I was deployed. It wasn't so much the Ted character that bothered me (since his sappy, beta behavior is frequently mocked by everyone else in the show) but the lack of any real masculine character. It's laughable that they try to shoehorn Jason Segal into that role when it's obvious that the actor is a laid back, introverted personality.

I thought the show was somewhat entertaining and funny when it was on the air. Granted, I watched most of the entire series 10+ years ago on DVD with my girlfriend at the time who was a nympho so I wasn't really analyzing the alpha/beta/whore dynamics of the characters.

The last season we would all get together (maybe 10 or so guys and girls) and pregame Thursday nights watching Friends, barbecuing, pounding beers, taking shots. It was a great way to kick off the weekend for a bunch of college kids. Good memories.

I haven't been able to sit through 5 minutes of an episode now when I am flipping through the channels.

Interesting thread - I never watched the first few seasons in their entirety and caught episodes here and there. It wasn't until my last couple years in high school that I seriously started watching the show, and thought was just fucking hilarious.

The episode where Ross took over for Pheobe's massage parlor, and had no idea what to do. So he got out wooden spoons, tonka trucks "Vroom vrooming" on their backs... I was in tears, it was the funniest shit I ever saw at that age in my life.

What was very surprising to me, when the last season aired on TV, was that was the first year I was in university. I show up to the dorm lounge to watch the show. It's ALL GIRLS except me. I'm used to thinking this show was a sitcom, and they'd glare at me every time I laughed at a funny part for "wrecking the mood" bThose stupid twits were treating grade A comedy (to me) like it was a fucking soap opera. Just disgusting.

Edited to add: At my age, would have banged all of the chics until pregnant, repeatedly.

The creators of Friends were wildly successful and contributed significantly to the changing of the male/female dynamic forever. How I Met Your Mother came in afterwards and cemented the notion.

Never watch Friends and glad I didn't.

Me I really don't think a TV show is responsible for the current decline in masculinity; I've written about it but I think it relates a lot more to the socioeconomy on the whole.

Shows like Friends are just a symptom of the problem, not to mention TV with similar premises like Everybody Loves Raymond, Malcom in the Middle, even the Simpsons, etc which feature bumbling dads paired with smart wives, or sissified man-children managing to marry hot women just by "being nice".

I definitely don't think Friends invented this trope though; even older obscure sitcoms like "The Munsters" contained this for example.

I definitely think in the 90s there was a huge surge in the trend of portraying men as "hypersenstive or incompetant losers" in TV though.

The same is true of the music scene; it's in the early 90s when the grunge movement and wussified alternative rock became mainstream as well.

While, in real life, Aniston (the highest paid TV actress at the time, on the cover of magazines, fit, adored by men and women alike) was frequently late to the set because Brad Pitt was giving her rough sex in her trailer and she was scared that he'd leave her if she didn't keep him satisfied. Shows that feminist fantasy is only mimicked in life if men are willing participants. And it seems that women actively seek out the men who aren't participants.

Not just romantic comedies - remember Superman II? The dude gave up being Super-fucking-man for that beat-out hag Margot Kidder. A woman who was only 31 when they were filming but looked in her mid 40s. And the character, instead of having any desirable traits for a potential mate, was independent, "intelligent", "strong" and a chain smoker (maybe that had something to do with her pre-aging).

Not a spoiler, but in Batman V Superman, Lois (played by a 41 year old Amy Adams at the time of shooting) floats the same idea to a decade younger Superman (Henry Cavill).

I believe that the 90s was the decade that really broke the back of Western culture. It was the decade that created the modern pussified male, and it was shows like this that did it. Yeah, I stand corrected on that.

Rom Coms seem like they're meant to cater to the opposite end of the spectrum, the bitchy, promiscuous, career driven women who think that one day they'll magically wind up happily ever after with a powerful male with plenty of options.

While sitcoms like Scrubs, Big Bang Theory, Friends, etc market themselves to the mild manner, milquetoast, momma's boys type of guy who thinks that he'll one day score a smoking hot babe once she realizes how "nice he is" deep down.

I dislike both genres because they create unrealistic expectations and encourage people to just "be whoever they want" instead of actually solve their own problems in life.

I completely agree. There's a reason why Roosh recommends this show as a teaching tool to learn how to talk to women.

Interestingly, the writers for Friends were sued for sexual harassment. Evidently, while they were working writing the show's episodes they made a lot of sexist jokes and comments, including saying that Courtney Cox had "twigs and sticks in her pussy" and that one of the writers "should have banged Anniston when he had the chance." They joked about making Joey a "serial rapist" and described in detail how they would write the story. The network agreed that they said those things, but the environment was necessary for "the writers' creative process." I believe the case was settled for undisclosed terms.

How does that jive with the atmosphere of the show?
