I've done some beat-matching with house, trap, jersey club, twerking, and even some pop music. That's about it. I'm planning on taking a class about Ableton Live 9 next year through my university. I play guitar in my free time, though the person that lent me his guitar just took it back...the struggle!

Making music is a bit of an expensive hobby, so I'm not really in the position to dedicate myself to it. For now it is an indulgence to break the monotony of trying to pay off student loans

You can get by on minimal investment, you don't need top of the line gear by any means. The biggest investment is your dedication to the work you put in. At the end of the day what's all that big money gear for if you have no talent?

Ableton Live is extremely user friendly, you can learn and become pretty efficient just by messing around and trying new things. A simple how to guide should be enough to teach you the basics, that's all you really need. For the advanced stuff, youtube usually works well. By all means take the class if it's free but if you're already using it you should know most of the stuff they will teach you already.

Happy to see a thread like this pop up.

I've been half-assed producing for nearly going on 6 years, I've learnt everything from YouTube tutorials / free websites + dnbforum info.

I'm in the process of working on an EP but life always finds a way to get in the mix.

My favourite artist at the moment would definitely be Tokyo Prose, his new releases remind me exactly why I got into producing Drum & Bass.

Before anyone asks I'm not a part of Ulterior Motive just using it as a homage to them.

My favourite piece of gear that I've bought would definitely be my Yamaha HS8's, since buying them I have had an insane increase in my productivity and the quality of my tunes and mixdowns. They are incredibly clear and all though some people say they lack bass I find that not to be the case.

Good start you got going there, I'd probably swap that snare out for something with less decay though and a bit more snappy instead of splashy. Throw a old school rnb/jazz break under there with high pass filter on it and it'll be rolling nicely!

I've made an album but it needs a female singer so once I can find one I can drop it. Then I'll make 2 hours of dance music and send it to my two dj friends.

Ulterior - what DAW are you using? I'm a Logic guy, but also use Live, Reason and Sibelius as the need calls for. Great time to be a composer/producer!

I was using Cubase for a while but I slowly worked my way into using FL 12 Rewired with Reason.

If I had a Mac I'd definitely be using Logic as I'm a big fan of the stock effects.

What kind of music do you produce?

Let's face it - all the major programs at this point are killer, and if you're using 40% of the features in them, you're essentially a power user!

I use Logic because it is one of the two industry standards (ProTools being the other). That said, I rely almost as heavily on Live, Reason and Sibelius, depending upon the composition.

You want to come up with something unique using these awesome programs? Study. Music theory, engineering, production, songwriting technique, arranging - the list goes on and on. I've been playing music for 55 years, have a degree in classical comp, and I STILL feel as though I'm just "scratching the surface" of this super-deep artform!
