Tequila all the way for me. If I'm social drinking I'll mix a Blanco on ice with soda and a squeeze of lime. Usually el Jimador, decent quality and good price.

I have to say I'm surprised by all the guys in this thread who think it's ok to mix liquor with juice or soft drinks. Nothing against a skillfully crafted cocktail once in a while, but vodka with gatorade or apple juice? Whisky with anything but more of the same whisky?

If you're referring to what Jura and I said about Zubrowka + apple juice(and a bit of lime), then to be fair that's a classic cocktail that even the producers suggest trying. Unfiltered apple juice goes well with the bison grass flavor.

I agree about the whisky, I only drink good whisky/brandy/rum neat or with a splash of water, but refusing to mix a relatively cheap, flavored vodka is taking the purism a bit far.

And if someone wants to pour Gatorade in some $10 vodka, well, it's not like they're ruining anything. Those mass produced vodkas aren't exactly made to be sipped anyway. It's not like they're pouring coke on single malt Scotch like savages.

Scotch, all the way. And Ardbeg is probably my favorite. Visited the distillery last year and was blown away by the beauty of Islay. They've had the Uigeadail expression at Costco recently, for a great price (about $60)

Ardbeg Uigeadail is a great bottle, it's about $70 around here.

I prefer Laphroaig but Ardbeg is my second choice. Lagavulin is up there too but I feel it's over-rated and over-priced now.

The cask strength version of Laphroaig is the best bottle I've ever had and I can get it for $56 here. I should probably buy a couple for when the price or quality inevitably changes, now that I think about it.

Yeah, I now love Laphroaig. It seems medicinal at first, but at least for me it's been one of those rare drinks that I just enjoy more and more as time goes by. Wicked hangover the next day though if I have more than three. As for "buy and hold", that never seems to work for me with Scotch or wine. I don't have the discipline to "hold" and I just end up drinking it sooner than I should have. Given your tastes, you should try all of the Islay scotches. Several are now owned by the big conglomerates, but they certainly don't all taste the same.

I want to know what everyone's experiences with jungle juice have been like.

Almost every big party I've been to has had it, but you need to pay a ridiculous price (usually $15) to get a cup (with refills).

On the night before Halloween last year I went to a party with a couple of my friends and when we left one of them said he swore they mixed it with molly. Scary shit, guys.

I've never actually made it myself. I imagine it'd be fun. Especially going to the store beforehand with your boys picking everything out. Fuck I need to do this for my 21st coming up.

Forgot to mention Louis Royer and Pierre Ferrand for cheaper options. The Pierre Ferrand Ambre I posted in the OP isn't the best bottle I've tried but it's a great value.

I might get shit for using such a good mezcal for mixing, but 2 parts this, 1 part ancho reyes, one part domaine de canton, and a splash of lime is fucking solid.

Two part domaine de canton and two parts VSOP level cognac is solid too.

Where did you get to try the maotai? That goes for over $270 here. I've been eyeing it off because I have no idea what it is, plus the price has got me curious.

On cognac, both hennessy and meukow put out decent vs cognacs, which will tend to be the cheapest. Armagnac is basically the same as cognac without the exclusivity of the name (similar to champagne)> I've tried Tariquet but wasn't impressed by it at all.

On rum, the best rum in the 'budget' range (under $50 aus, which is around US$20-30 based on other posts here) is definitely Havana club anejo.


A blend of at least 5 year old rums, it has a beautiful natural vanilla flavour running through it, and not a hint of harshness that you get with other low price rums.

It should be noted that this product is not available in the US, due to the Cuban trade embargo (though Barcardi makes a Rum named the same thing that is sold only in the US, but is a different product)

There's ABK6 VSOP which you can find for about $25. I've never tried it but their XO is great for the money and if the VSOP is as good of a value as the XO then that would definitely be your best bet. I can't vouch for it though because I haven't tried this particular bottle.


If you can bump that up to ~$45, either of these would be good too:

Louis Royer VSOP __ Pierre Ferrand Ambre

The Ambre is 100% Grand Champagne grapes, which you usually only see in more expensive bottles.

And if you can find it, the Louis Royer blows most other VSOP's away when it comes to value.

Glugger mentioned Meukow VS, it would fall in your price range too if you don't want to spend more and can't find ABK6. As far as VS's go, Meukow>Leyrat>Camus>Hennessey>Courvoisier. Fuck Remy Martin.
I wouldn't call most VS's sipping cognacs though.

My nearby liquor store is always giving samples of weird stuff.

It wasn't the Kweichow Moutai though, it was the much cheaper 'Moutai Prince' which is their midrange offering(~$75 per bottle as opposed to ~300 for the Kweichow).

It was brutal, and it stuck with me and fucked up my taste-buds all day.

I'm still curious about the Kweichow even though the Prince was awful. I like trying obscure/exotic liquors.
