60 Minutes' defence that they "were not influenced" is actually wrongfooted. What they should have said was that they gave no reassurances to the government. That is what marks them out as the mouthpieces of the powerful - because the only person who needs to "assure" government toadies is someone who fears them or has them as a boss.

Real journalists would say "Thanks for raising those concerns with us, but we'll run our piece the way we choose, and fuck your feelings." They wouldn't see themselves as needing to reassure anybody of anything. They sure as fuck don't reassure targets of their hit pieces that they'll get a fair hearing of their side of the story.

I can picture it. Sometime in September. Republican nominee Donald Trump has been pounding Hillary for months for being a crook, having low energy, and not having the health and stamina to be president. She's under tremendous stress. Nontheless the polls are tight. They have a big debate. They come back from the commercial break and Trump is up there, but Shrillery's podium is empty. Trump starts talking about how he has the strength and stamina to stand up to Isis and questions if Shrillery does. She comes out a few minutes later looking embarrsed. Later on in the debate, Shrillery has a three minute coughing fit where she's not able to get a word out.

My personal theory is that China mapped out key US positions and email traffic from Hillary's time at State to precision target their phishing operations which lead to them stealing 20 million American's personal clearance information from OPM.
