The only other protein powder I can find here in the Phils with out Sucralose is some crazy expensive health store Whey with not even that much protein in it (18gr)
This stuff looks ok on the label and is also packed with amino acids.. I just don't know how I feel about a vegan protein... I don't want to end up gay

RE: Protein Shakes
Does anyone have difficulty consuming Whey products?

I got massively sick to my stomach when I used to drink Whey protein shakes. I switched over to Gold Standard Casein and haven't had any issues since. I drink it with some berries, psyllium, and semi skimmed milk before bed.

What's the consensus on whey vs casein?

RE: Protein Shakes
Anyone ever challenge the notion that you *need* protein powder in order to build a quality physique?

What I mean is this. I've travelled a bit and worked out in outdoor gyms with guys much bigger than I, and surely most of them do not have access to protein shakes because they are extremely expensive abroad and because the local income is not high enough to warrant the purchase.

In North America you have kids gulping down two shakes a day but are still small or skinny-fat after many months in the gym.

And as far as I understand, guys in prison only have access to basic sources of protein yet are often huge due to hard training.

Interesting article that brought some of these thoughts to my mind: http://skinnyfattransformation.com/optim...in-intake/

Here's an excerpt. Read the brief article if you want to get a better picture of his observations.

Quote: Conclusion: Protein Intake is Overrated

After reading this, you should have gotten an idea of my stance on protein intake and post-workout protein: it’s highly overrated.

The high protein intake made my wallet lighter, I was often constipated, I stressed all the time about getting enough protein and most importantly: high protein intake didn’t benefit me in any way.

I have been consuming about 0.5-0.7 g of protein per lb of bodyweight in the past 2 years, yet I have made great strength gains in my training and added inches to my shoulders and arms.

I'm not a vegan but i like using this vegan protein (sometimes in combination with others).
I actually prefer this stuff over whey because of its (grainy) texture. I feel like it digests very well and tastes pretty good.

RE: Protein Shakes
I'm using a terrific 100% plant-based/natural protein powder. The Vanilla flavoured one for example contains only 3 ingredients: Golden Pea protein isolate, Plant-based sweetner (thaumatin) and Natural vanilla extract. There is not a single chemical is used during the production of the peas i.e. no pesticides, GMO's, etc, and as part of the ingredients.

You get a bit over 20g of protein per 25g serving. Its packed with all 9 essential amino acids. It's alkaline, where most powders aren't. And the protein is around 98% digestable. This is often overlooked because not all the protein we consume is utilised. I've never experienced any indigestion or health related side effects.

Here's some more info on the protein, on their website. They have a couple of other interesting stuff too:

I only use vegan powder, and I recommend other guys do to. Most whey is filled with garbage, and whey itself is a cheap byproduct of milk.

I've tried a couple, but this is my favorite (no affiliate):

It's also roughly the same price as Optimum Nutrition whey, so I have no reason not to buy it.

RE: Protein Shakes
I find that anything but pure isolate protein tends to give me some stomach trouble. So even though I understand the science behind a blended product (slow release into the system) I tend to stay away. This works well for me and just me after much trial and error - cold processed, purest, isolate protein in a flavor that I like. Also had good success mixing with water as the higher quality products taste better and don't need milk for mouth feel / taste.

Also, at my yearly checkup (first in ten years...) my doctor recommended staying properly hydrated when supplementing with protein as the product does pull a lot of water out of your system for proper digestion. Not drinking enough alongside regular exercise and supplementation can be hard on the kidneys and liver. I do notice this if I ever have a second shake in the evening - need more water to stay hydrated.

I much prefer meat based protein powders like this PurePaleo Protein. Very expensive, but great for the T and no digestion issues. I haven't tried the other flavors but chocolate tastes very good. Only other downside (besides cost) is that it doesn't mix very well.

Ir you're looking for a recovery shake I would recommend you progenex recovery. It is not cheap but it is good and tastes great. If not, you can find any slow release protein that is usually taken post workout or at night.

Finally, if you want fast recovery of your muscles, glutamine is the way to go, and it is cheaper.

Have you tried taking Whey Isolate? If not you should look into it. There's a difference between whey blend and isolate.

RE: Protein Shakes
I know guys bitch and moan about the cost of protein. Have you factored it against buying actual meat? I'm not going to get into "veggie protein" because I think it's bullshit, the protein you get from rice and lentils or whatever is negligible, probably not bioavailable, and I don't even count it in my daily protein intake except as a beard-scratching mental masturbation exercise. I will try swapping for a pure vegan diet one day (absolutely no soy) to see if it works, since rice and beans are incredibly cheap, but it's not a recommended diet (you have to supplement vitamin b12 or risk getting dementia in old age).

MyProtein has the best prices, quality, and deals on the market. I get about 22 pounds of the unflavored whey (sometimes isolate depending on deals) every few months.

Work out the math, it's cheaper to buy whey protein (about 25 cents per 20 grams - 1 scoop) than it is to buy almost any meat, and you usually get very few fats or carbs per scoop.

Meat is about $2.00 per pound where I live (for chicken breast, the gold standard of protein). As cheap as possible. That's 135 grams of protein. This works out to 30 cents per 20 grams. HOWEVER - chicken they sell in stores is bloated up with salt water, so "5 pounds" of chicken works out to only about 2 pounds and 15 ounces cooked. This inflates the price very significantly. You get less than 60% of what you pay for.

Even supposing that MyProtein's whey protein is spiked with nitrogen (LabDoor's assayers claim that they aren't compared to practically every other protein distributor out there), the salt-water bloat factor of chicken makes the comparative 60% factor unlikely. Even dumpster protein powder is cleaner than 40% trash aminos.

You compare it to beef and whey protein might be twice as cheap (or more, beef is not very protein dense, maybe 90g per pound).

Granted - whey spikes insulin, and insulogenic foods may or may not be useful for fat loss depending on when and why you are eating them. Fair point, nutrition trolls.

People who claim that protein intake is overrated fail to take a lot of factors into account. Protein intake is more important than practically anything. If you eat none, you die. It's the only essential macronutrient. The guys getting a big boner about how they "manage" to get jacked while eating 12% less than the recommended .8g/pound of bodyweight could have a biochemical predisposition towards greater protein uptake, supposing they're actually making the gainz they say they are, or they're lying, or they're not really breaking down enough muscle tissue to justify more protein intake.

That being said, it's not rocket science to suggest that different people have different needs, and "disproving" a guideline based on the average of everybody when it's well within a sigma of uncertainty proves precisely jack shit. Being edgy on a blog post and being criminally misinformed are often one and the same.

Jacked vegans are the "exceptions" that prove the rule - 99% of them have not gone from skinny fat weak bitch to reasonably built, and when you look closer they all have had a foundation of meat or animal protein somewhere. There's a "vegetarian" German strongman who got up to like 250# on a meat diet, switched to vegetarian a few years ago, immediately dropped 20 pounds (it's not conducive to holding on to lean mass) and is still setting obscure strength records to the titillation of tumblrites everywhere.

Lots of rice and bean eating IRTs and North Africans who have emigrated from their home countries, none of them are close to jacked. They usually have big bellies, tiny arms, skinny wrists, and no calves. I'm also not the first guy to notice that a lot of Mexican immigrants are inexplicably 5' 5" while their children are much taller than they are. Low protein intake in childhood and puberty is why they didn't grow the way they ought to have.

Powdered food/protein powder is far from ideal. It is ultra processed crap cut with god knows what. And the ingredient cost is a fraction of the retail price. You are paying for the scammy marketing, packaging, and big fat profits for some Tim Ferris wannabe. And yeah, I get that good meat is expensive, but I don't think it makes any sense to choose protein powder over eggs.

Powders are less than ideal as a primary protein source but used as intended as a supplement to your primary protein sources it can be a practical addition. Saying to avoid because it's marketed and packaged by people wanting profits would stop you from buying anything, near everything is marked up to factor in those costs but you can avoid the middle man and go to where supp companies by their whey from. As far as protein powders being ultra processed, removing whey is a relatively simple process, if you want to stick to foods thats state has never been altered your choice but a quality protein powder isn't going to be taking years off your life or reducing the quality of it unless you're using just shit full of artificial sweetners etc. Cut with god knows what, this is another reason I avoid the middle man, from the source 3rd party testing and you get a full breakdown of ingredients included and quality. You can choose to flavor naturally as i do, and your left with a non gmo, stevia sweetened, soy free product whose only ingredient outside stevia is the whey itself. The supp industry is shady so I get the hesitation, and for most people, a powder will never be necessary. For those who take their lifting seriously, and ingest 200+ grams of protein a day it is a convenience, both to lifestyle and general comfort/wellbeing and doesn't hurt the pocketbook. I get a majority of my protein thru wild fish, grass fed beef, eggs and greek yogurt and there are days I won't have shakes but in a pinch it does the job and there are periods where I'll have 2 and 3 a day because my schedule forces me to. Don't be so quick to write them off as a potential tool but I do agree in principle that real food should always be the 1st choice.

RE: Protein Shakes
After all the marketing hype and bro science that goes on in the supplement industry, I've been a bit burnt out from trying to figure out which protein drinks are better than the competition. In response to that, I'm considering building my own chicken coop on my property and just raise organic chicken eggs as a primary source of nutrition. Long before their were protein powders, man ate protein in the more natural, less processed form, and somehow, some way, he was fit ans strong. This is one of those instances where I think less truly is more.

Brands don't necessarily matter - it's the ingredients. Namely, how little they have.

The less ingredients the better.

Scooby has a great video about this:

As for how necessary protein supplements are - truth is in the word: supplement

It should not be your primary source for taking in protein. You should be eating real food.

I use this stuff and get it at costco for a great price. Just be careful it being all natural it uses sugar alcohol. Not bad for you but if you go over 25 Grams a day it will give you the shits.

I'm lactose intolerant and have tried every kind of "super high quality whey isolate" on the market and nothing comes close to vegan, just make sure to avoid soy.

A few other good ones are sunwarrior and rawfusion. They just don't taste as good and aren't as versatile plus much more expensive.

I use Musclepharm Combat powder. I get it from Costco and ends up being 70 CAD for 5 pound tub . It only comes in cookies n cream flavour. I've been drinking this protein for the last 2 to 3 years now and getting in at least 5 scoops in a day. sometimes costco has a sale and its cheaper i think by $10-15.

Look into the "Kaizen" brand they sell. It's higher in protein and lower in calories

I have the Musclepharm stuff too but it doesn't mix as well and it sometimes tastes too sugary. I only use it once in a while for a "dessert"

Edit - Actually the Kaizen stuff has higher calories per scoop but
Kaizen 42g scoop = 150 calories and 35g protein
MP 35g scoop = 140 calories and 25g protein
