This is also true in Germany as well. You can't take a direct train from Vienna to Munich anymore at least when I was there a month ago, and at the train station they told me "the border is closed" - so one has to wait and take a connecting train at the border after going though a makeshift customs/passport control line. Pain in the ass but its to make us all safer, right?

But then when I got to Germany I quickly learned that's just at the main crossings.....there are no police or anyone manning the countless other secondary roads and train routes across the border. With all the social media and mobile technology pretty much anyone can quickly figure out how to circumvent these "border control" checkpoints and get into Germany. Chr*st when I was at the border (a very small Austrian town) there were 10-15 sketchy looking migrant dudes trying to get in at the checkpoint (which clearly was being guarded and had 5-6 armed military looking guys on duty). I can only imaged those were the 12th guys on the deal team who didn't get the message as to where they should really cross over without any hassles.

So as you said it's all a big bunch of lies and grandstanding and mostly nothing is being done. Even in France after the attacks and Hollande's "This time it's different & we're declaring war on terror" it's back to normal (i.e. they are doing pretty much nothing). A buddy of mine was in Paris a few weeks ago and said he didn't see any signs of increased protection nor a mass show of force from the police anymore.

Edit: in seeing Lizard's post below seems that Sweden finally did something, but they have a lot of sea crossings - difficult to believe that Germany or any of the other EU countries can fully shut down their borders unless they were really committed to it (which they don't seem to be at the moment).

In Germany, 127,000 migrants entered in December, which was a slowdown from the 200,000 or so a month that they took in from September through November (which were the highest inflows so far). Right now they're getting about 3,000 a day which is a bit lower than the December rate. The main reason for the slowdown has been the bad weather in the Mediterranean.

As far as Sweden goes, the border controls are real and are working. They were seeing about 1,000 migrants coming over the Oresund bridge at the height of the migration, and now there are almost none because anyone without valid papers is being turned away. It's not foolproof but they have drastically reduced the inflows. In addition, Denmark which has been serving as a transit country for migrants en route to Sweden has started doing random ID checks for people entering from Germany, and turning away anyone without valid papers.

The actions taken by Sweden and Denmark are putting even more pressure on Germany. So far the Germans have not taken any steps whatsoever to reduce the inflows, although as mentioned they have benefited somewhat from the weather. But given the actions of their neighbors, if the Germans don't act then by springtime their position will become untenable because every single migrant will be headed there. Other countries should keep tightening border controls and maintain the pressure on Germany to act.
