I've been going to a lot of those asian massage places the last few years where you get a 1 hr massage for $20 which is insanely cheap compared to most and now I just found one in my area where it is $15 for one hour. They are usually located in older strip malls and no one can really speak english.

I'm guessing everyone working there must be illegals because the minimum wage in my state is around $10 a hour so there is no way they can be flipping a profit paying them minimum wage and only charging $15 an hour.

I'm just curious how these places stay in business? I see tons of them around and I have been going to the same one for the past 2 or 3 years and it's still in business.

I'm in the U.S. and as far as I can tell these are all strictly massage places and I have never been propositioned for anything more.

there are 3 levels:

1) legit - just a cheap massage, not out of this world but not terrible either.

2) semi legit - some girls go for extras, most don't

3) backpage shit - the massage is just a cover for fucking, the girls all know what the deal is

you can spot #3s based on their location (warehousing districts, strip clubs, strip clubs, and sex toy shops are usually near by) and they will have a certain look to them

-frosted or covered windows for privacy
-lots of neon lights
-they don't just hire asian girls

In all 3 categories it's basically Chinese immigrants setting up shop as a way to get their relatives in the country, the pay is low because usually they live with their dad, uncle, brother, grandpa, 4th cousin, etc and have low expenses.

The ones I go to seem totally legit though.

For the $20/ $15 price point you are a in large room with 12 different beds/massage chairs so NO funny business goes down because you are surrounded by a bunch of other people.

I don't see how they can be making money unless they are paying their employees less than minimum wage and I would think they would eventually get caught up but this place has been open for years.

Well... From what I gather, the house gets the fee and the masseuse keeps the tips. How much they want to do for tips is up to them and behind closed doors.
I just so happen to work with a former massage therapist. She would often have guys wanting something extra and she says she would say no and then ask them to leave. I dont buy her story. She is weird and is more than likely trying to avoid slut shaming for making good coin. She is also calling the cops on the local rub and tug trying to get them investigated and shut down. The cops ignore her.

Your hunch is right. They almost definitely pay the employees less than minimum wage/pocket their tips/etc. The only way places get caught is when an employee reports it to the government. This risk is mitigated if you only hire people who will suffer harm from reporting you, e.g. illegals, people who need the job for their immigration status, etc. I used to wonder how Asians can be illegal immigrants (you can't bloody well swim the Pacific) until someone reminded me that illegal immigration includes overstaying a visa.

The house keeps the fees, they divide up the tips among the staff.

Some of these people have dirt cheap living expenses, and don't spend over $500 a month on rent, bills, and food.

Many can work that type of work and still afford flights back home to visit family and go shopping.

They probably still have a back room, would not doubt if the girls live upstairs in the shop. Many use the business front to bring in more migrants. In Canada at least there is a loophole for business owners to fast track immigration.
