I've just been listening to some songs that I haven't heard in years, and have brought memories of high school and early university flooding back. There are two things that can bring back memories and take you back to very specific times in your life - smells and music.

I remember making a cassette copy of the album No. 4. I wasted so many hours smoking weed and listening to these songs.

One of my favorite bands from the 90s, with Core & Purple both being classics.
I think i'll try to play a few STP songs tonight as well.

Re: QC & AB - Guitar and music in general is such a great release and catharsis. I picked up the guitar a couple years ago myself after getting my heart broken and finding the red pill right around the same time, and it's been a great ride. It definitely lends itself to game, women love a man who can entertain, or at least has the balls to throw some guitar licks out there and try to sing. And it's a wonderful source of personal satisfaction to create art (or at least imitate art). For someone with an intellectual brain it all just becomes memorization and repetition, and then leads to a deeper understanding of how to structure different music and that leads to creating your own.

But RIP Scott, sad to see the demons finally caught up with him.

RIP Scott. Here's a video for Quintus on how to learn Plush, the acoustic version. It's well done.

If QC or anyone else wants to learn to play by covering this tune, I'd suggest learning this, and "Like a rolling Stone" by Dylan, at the same time. Plush is a little more involved, so will take longer, LARStone is very very simple, G-D-Am, and you must learn these three chords for guitar. So, you practice Plush, maybe have had enough, and switch to LARStone, and sing with it. Singing is therapeutic!! Playing and singing in your room in the dark, making a load of noise, is therapeutic.

Also, maybe someone can help me find a video with Scott Weiland in it ( I think) It's high action in a room with a hottie, lots of movement, it's sexy as hell. Can't find the damn video.

Such a shame, another musician taken down by opiates. Don't mess with that shit - ever - it will follow you through your life and kill you eventually if you're not lucky enough to break the cycle. I met Scott twice - seemed like a super-sweet guy in my limited time spent talking with him. A friend was his personal assistant/minder when he got back together with STP, he told me that "minding" Scott was the HARDEST job he'd ever had - he quit after a few months of madness.

Heroin was very cheap in the 90's, particularly in Seattle, which was the Zeitgeist flash point. It was deeply-ingrained in grunge culture, though it would have been easy to miss this is you were a younger teenager when it was happening.

It's come back in Seattle in a big way over the last few years, where muso friends have told me it's easier to get and cheaper than weed or oxy. National drug stats and rehab centre data seem to back this up: it's the most common reason for admission in the 18-29 set.

I lost a few friends to it, and saw one guy paralysed down his entire left side for life. Opiates are bad fucking news.

I suspect a combination of luck and greatly-reduced purity of product.

A street junkie fix in the 80's would have been 5% pure, cut with baby laxatives or powdered milk. The guy I know who was paralysed injected heroin that had been cut with a chemical cleaner. Rock stars might have had access to improved quality, but I doubt it would have been high.

Contrast with now, the Mexican Cartels produce enough Black Tar Heroin with such regular supply lines into the US that the drug is about half the price of 90's powdered heroin: cheap enough for high schoolers.

It usually cut with lactose, and 90% pure.

I 'discovered' STP, Alice N Chains, Nirvana and the rest of grunge while in college in the early 00's. This brings back a lot of good college memories. Plush is probably my all-time favorite song. Even after 10 years I listened to it and knew every word.

I will testify that playing Plush on an acoustic guitar can get you laid. My sophomore year in college I hadn't so much as held a chick's hand my entire life, but I had serious oneitis for this chick on my hall. As fate would have it my roommate in college had an acoustic guitar, so he taught me the notes for the intro to plush. I got good enough to get to the lyrics but then would run out of skill. I was in my room with the oneitis chick from my hall and played the intro chords to Plush on my roommate's guitar. Complete anime eyes. After I stopped playing I put on some more STP and we kept talking and eventually got the first makeout of my life. A few weeks later I got the bang. RIP Scott.

I don't get how these rock stars that smoke 2packs a day and do black tar heroin don't really look haggard at all.

Guys like Kiedis, Tommy Lee, Clapton, and Bowie have all done ungodly amounts of drugs and they all look 10 years younger.

Their looks were definitely impacted by their use, but weathered faces suit men as they age. If they look younger, I suspect it's due to having a personal stylist, but, done the wrong way, it often leaves again male rock stars looking like middle-aged lesbians.



There also a tendency for rock artists to mythologise their drug use for both the 'cool' factor and the extra artistic credibility it offers their work - though everyone quick learns to never record high - so I'd take their claims of grand debasement with a grain of salt. (Cobain's mythologised homelife versus the reality is pretty damn amusing). I suspect the reality of rock star drug abuse is far more polite.

Note Bowie was a cokehead, not a heroin user.





If you're got a strong stomach, and want to see what real hardcore junkies - not rock star poseurs - look like, type something like 'black tar heroin arms' or 'heroin use abscess' into google. This is one of the softer images. A lifter from my gym back home has a huge chunk of flesh missing below the knee from one of these. He tells women it was 'a type of cancer'. Admittedly, even with the disfiguration, the guy slays pussy.

Well that's because many of them didn't

The ones that indulged like Ozzy, Duff,Steven Adler, Robbin Crosby etc show the signs from exploded pancreases to strokes to death.

One thing that seperates them from regular folks is they never had to worry about money ever....that in itself takes a huge weight off ones shoulders.

Then there are the fake ones like Nikki Sixx who does the whole book/record package on a fake addiction, starts fueds with bands only to go on tour with them a few months later....its all packaged rebellion

Resurrecting this thread for a couple of reasons.

-I meant to say "Knockin' on Heavens Door" by Dylan, not 'Like a rolling stone'. "Knockin'" is the simplest tune to learn guitar and sing with. The three chords G, D, Am7, then G, D, C, are initially a pain for a beginner but must be learned.

- I decided to check out some Stp, and came across this incredible performance. Weiland looks possessed, it's awesome. The guy was a Rockstar. The whole tune from 35 minutes on is inspiring, the crowd singing back, the energy he's putting out in sweltering heat, great stuff.

His ex wife wrote a letter to Rolling Stone basically saying he was a turd who never saw his kids or family. He did not even go to a Christmas school performance because he had turned atheist. She said to not go out and buy his music in rememberance but to help anyone you love who is a junkie..He was a typical fiend and stressed everyone around him. A grown man who cared more about brown than his family and life.

This is how it is with many creative geniuses. I remember reading about Dostoevsky's life and thought "Shit, that guy lived full throttle and made a lot of bad choices"

I love Art in all it's forms and have a lot of respect for talented people, but that's where it ends. I don't require them to be saints or good people, and as such I don't give much credence to them when they try to be political, etc.

I completely separate the appreciation for their talent from who they might be as a person.
