Sad news for me. My musical memory is firmly grounded in the 80s and 90s. These decades have special resonance for me, and it's always sad to see the icons of the period fade away.

I never really got over Layne Staley's death. There were so many others: Shannon Hoon, Cobain (of course), etc.

Funeral dirge for Scott. Here is my favorite STP song. The acoustic version of "Plush." If I could play the guitar, this is the first song I'd want to play.

WOW! RIP. I saw him in concert a 2 years ago. He wasn't at his top game, but he looked like he was turning himself around. STP is one of my favorite bands from the 90s.

Anyhow, got to see STP once within the last 10 years. Not exactly a great concert. They were an hour late and everything sounded muddled and distorted. I was very close to Weiland and he looked right at me with demon eyes throughout the show.

That said, Weiland/STP really fire up the 90's music era nostalgia for me. They had a lot of great songs. Interstate Love Song in particular is one of my favorite driving songs. A LOT of days and nights driving to that song on the open country.

Always liked Big Empty. Kind of surprised he lived so long actually.

He was a hardcore H junkie for a long time and has looked like a walking corpse since the late 90's.

Damn. I really liked his work with Velvet Revolver. Love both albums.
Went twice to their concerts.

Great frontman and great great singer.
Brings up good memories and years of listening pleasure.

One of the classic sounds of high school. Music rotation back then pretty much consisted of this, Alice in Chains, Sublime, Beastie Boys, Blind Melon, Devo, Depeche Mode, Tool, and Radiohead.

It's not Bert Jansch or Nick Drake. Given your disciplined mind and your language studies, I think you could be playing that easily-enough within six months, and roughly within eight weeks. It's just about committing certain fingerings to muscle memory and learning to ease the transitions.

Even if you never take it further than just chord busking level, being able to strum out a rough version of a popular song always offers babe appeal, and modern pop music is regressing to be as harmonically-simple as 50's rock or 60's bubblegum, which makes sense, given the adolescent mindset of blue pill 20-something millennials, so you can knock off something like 'Shake it off' with three chords. I liked his music from Velvet Revolver more than STP but it's still a great loss either way.
I'm not surprised by him dying relatively young. 48 is way too soon, but hard drugs and partying for the past 20 something years will do that to you.
I read that he lost his brother to drugs a few years back and that's what prompted him to turn his life around and try to get clean. I guess it didn't take.

You're probably right. I've been told that learning to play an instrument has real therapeutic powers. Need to look into that...

I should also say, for those who don't know, that AB is an extremely talented musician himself.

Damn shame. He had a legendary voice, probably my 2nd favorite of all time behind Layne Staley. Now both are gone, but at least with modern technology their voices will live on forever.

For those who are too young, these people were music revolutionaries in the early 1990's. Early 1990's music was in a rut. Rock music was growing stale and shitty pop music written to appease 14 year old girls was taking over. There was no internet to get underground music out, and concerts and music labels were mostly monopolies pushing music that didn't appeal to a majority of young men.

Then Nirvana broke through with "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and it was a tidal wave of a musical backlash. It was really something amazing to behold and probably something we will not truly get to experience again most likely. Weiland and STP was right in the middle of all this. So much damn good music in such a short time, and he was one of the faces of this movement. The overall music scene from 1992 to about 1996 was a run that was just amazing to experience.

I'd vouch for that. It's a great stress release, and builds connection with people, both personally and in a community sense. Forget the image of dreary hipsters playing 'Imagine' at vigils. Go to an Irish pub, or a Greek wedding, and you will experience a rich sense of cultural life and human bonding. You've travelled enough to understand this... come join us, mate.

Hell, I was thinking about your 'see further' pep talk the other day, and sat down and wrote one of the best songs of my life. Turn your worries into art, and it exorcises them. I suspect you do this through the disciplined quality of your writing already: the process of addressing conflicted thoughts, calm analysis, refinement of ideas and strengthening of commitment or increased self-knowledge is very, very close to my working style. A guitar might simply be another, less serious outlet for you.

Thanks for your kindness, but I'd say I'm simply a decent piano player and a strong song writer because there were no shortcuts for me. I simply worked at it for years without the privilege of lessons or instruction, bashing my head against the wall repeatedly until it eventually gave way.

All the other instruments you hear me playing I'd never played before I started that last record. What sounds like competence is simply intellectual force of will. It can be done, and you know this: it's all through your writing.

You're highly-intelligent, so don't sell yourself short. If a mouth-breather like Taylor Swift can play guitar, you're overqualified.

Music is a Dionysian thing. The beauty of it is that anyone can get it. I'd definitely learn music if I didn't already play guitar. Lizard you should give it a try. I went from being nearly tone deaf to being a decent ear over a ten year period.

Layne Staley's death was so awful. Now Scott? Fuck.

This! The early-mid 90s mainstream music scene was something very special; tons of raw and genuine talent came about during that time. I don't want to turn this into a 90's music thread (I think we have one already somewhere anyway) but Weiland was a significant part of defining that era. Since I get quite nostalgic hearing music from that time period (including STP obviously), Weiland's death was kind of a hit to the gut.

A lot of videos are a bit odd (as was par for the course at the time) but the music is legit.

I remember when I bought Purple as a 16 year old upon its eagerly awaited release.

It didn't really resonate straight away and in an impulsive moment, I almost returned the CD.

Glad I didn't, classic 90's album. Credit has to go to Brendan O'Brien for his production efforts as well. Such a great sound.

As good as Purple was, their third album - Tiny Music, songs from the Vatican gift shop is what really hit home for me.

They retained their rock swagger that they're renowned for, but showed off their chops to a higher level. It really showcased the DeLeo brothers full talents - such solid musicians. Nods to Jazz were appreciated.

RIP Mr Weiland.
