I seen on facebook yesterday. Here in Poland it is the national holiday and there was some Nazi nationalist protest in the town where i live. It was just a picture, i couldn't actually read it.
But all these Polish people were like "uhh this is so embarrassing" and posting crap like that.

As I've said here before, the EU is terrified of nationalism, for two main reasons:

WW2 guilt(Nazi Germany)

the EU works by removing elements of nationalism: EU or IMF? central bank installed, Euro currency replaces national currency, Brussels has final say over legislation(lack of sovereignty). There are other ways too that it dilutes or removes the forces of nationalism. In the popular narrative nationalism is equated with far-right politics and neo-nazism. This whole package makes the concept/force of nationalism an enemy to the EU in many ways.

There is absolutely no reason why there couldn't be an Europe of strong individualistic nations, co-operating in trade,business and finance. There isn't a problem with over 20 European currencies, because there will always be trends towards the popularity of strong currencies, providing there is peace and amicable relations there can still be prosperity. (slightly idealistic rant)

The changes in Europe over the last 22 years since the Maastricht Treaty was signed have been incredibly detrimental to most of Europe, and the only people who have benefited are the politicians and people at the top of the corporations. I suppose both the Euro and non-Euro economic migrants have benefited, but better things could have been achieved if they hadn't migrated(by Euro migrant, I'm referring to for example: Eastern Europeans who work in the UK, Germany etc.).

I could be stating the obvious but the reason we're seeing this anti-invader tone popping up in Poland in particular is due to the country's history of getting constantly fucked by invaders (Russia, Germany etc.). Whereas Germany, at least in modern history, has been the aggressor and now won't stop self-flagellating.

In general, being behind the Iron Curtain during the Cold War has unwittingly preserved nationalism in those eastern European countries. This includes eastern Germany.

It just goes to show that Anglo-American capitalism is completely corrosive to the well being of a national consciousness. In the Anglo sphere of influence, France and Finland are beacons of national independence.

I was going to say, when you mentioned it earlier in the thread, but you should not stay away from Europe because of that.

You have many things in your favour. In the UK you will be treated as an American regardless of your skin colour(this is dealt with in the Moma&Rudebwoy podcast thread) Many Europeans speak very good English. I hope you plan to go to Amsterdam you'll have a good time. The art museums are second to none and have masterpieces from many eras of history. It also has some very good nightclubs. You're an RVF member and you have access to global contacts and information tailored to some of your interests. There are many members all over Europe who would probably be happy to help you find your way around.

There is a stereotype of the 'ignorant American', but it can soon be cast away through the quality of your interaction. You'll be fine.
