Dalai Lama supports female successor if 'very attractive'
Quote:The Dalai Lama has suggested that his successor could be female - but only if she is "very attractive".
The spiritual leader said there was no reason a woman could not replace him, adding that she would be more biologically suited to show affection and compassion.
Speaking to the BBC, the Dalai Lama recalled how he had originally made a comment to a French journalist about 15 years ago.
He said: "I think females should take more important role.
"I told the reporter, if a female Dalai Lama comes her face must be - should be - very attractive."
When asked for clarification, he continued: "When female Dalai Lama comes, then that female must be attractive, otherwise not much use."
The increasingly nervous reporter questioned whether he was joking, to which the Tibetan replied that what he was saying was "true".
The Dalai Lama, who is celebrating his 80th birthday year this year, was touring London to promote compassion.

I felt a great disturbance in the Force. As if millions of Facebook Yoga Moms cried out in terror...and were suddenly triggered.

RE: Dalai Lama supports female successor if 'very attractive'
It would make sense for a female Dalai Lama to have to be attractive, because Buddhism teaches that beauty/handsomeness are the karmic outcomes of Goodness with a capital G; i.e. if you do a lot of good deeds in this life, you will reincarnate as someone more attractive. On the other hand, being ugly is a punishment for past evil deeds.
The Buddha himself was described as being exceedingly handsome, with women practically throwing themselves at him even when he was the celibate leader of an ascetic religious movement.
An ugly woman as a Buddhist leader would only lead to doubt among the true faithful - because an ugly woman is ugly because she is carrying a lot of bad karmic debt. A person loaded with that much bad karma is not fit to be a pure, holy religious leader in a messianic-Buddhist sect like Tibetan Buddhism.
Really, if western media criticize the Dalai Lama's stance on this, they are attacking Buddhist culture and people's religious beliefs. That's rather intolerant.
(How I know all this: I was heavily into Buddhism once, and to an extent I still am. That said, I've always leaned towards Theravada Buddhism (especially the Thailand forest schools), so if I've misunderstood anything regarding Tibetan Buddhism and you can point it out, please do so.)

My understanding of it is the same as yours, although I would suggest the Buddhist interpretation would include things like radiance, soulfulness, mannerisms etc in its definition of manifested external beauty, in addition to physical attractiveness. So the Buddhist would essentially have the capacity to say (and mean) a girl was 'very attractive', even if some of the hardened players here felt her pointy elbows, or the fact that she would likely be a beautiful old woman, downgraded her to a mere 6.

RE: Dalai Lama supports female successor if 'very attractive'
As someone who was raised Buddhist (Theravada though), this thread makes me proud.
I should also note that Buddhism (Theravada at least) isn't as new-agey/equality-pushing as some Westerners think. Women are generally regarded as "less developed" than men, must be good to reincarnate as a man to get closer to reaching nirvana, aren't allowed into the holiest parts of certain temples, etc. Don't get it twisted though, it's not like in Islam, where at least a hijab seems required in public.
I can't speak for the Dalai Lama, but I agree with previous posters - when he said "attractive," he likely meant it in the way that external attractiveness reflects internal attractiveness (i.e., if one has the mindset to exercise, and thus exercises, that attractive mindset will be reflected in an attractive body).
I should also note that it's sad/silly/stupid that Christianity would likely get attacked for having similar beliefs (I can't say if it does), while Buddhism likely wouldn't (at least in the West).

If what you are saying is true, that is red pill as fuck.
As red pill as the Bible is, there is a lot that doesn't make sense to me.
As red pill as the Koran is, most of it is incoherent babbling.
Perhaps it's time to look into something new.
You might find Theravada Buddhist scriptures overly repetitive (they were initially designed to be chanted, and thus have a lot of repetition, almost like the chorus of a song).
The Theravada scriptures, are, however, a good place to start learning about Buddhism in general. A lot of Chinese and Tibetan Buddhism is just extra layering on top of the Theravada scriptures. (Japanese Buddhism is layering upon layering - it relies heavily on Chinese writings).
The first Buddhist scripture I would recommend reading is the first sermon that Buddha gave, the Fire Sermon:

If the message of the Fire Sermon intrigues you, then this introductory 'walk' through the Theravada scriptures will help you learn more (if you didn't like the message of the Fire Sermon, you probably won't like Buddhism in general): http://www.accesstoinsight.org/ptf/index.html

I'd recommend a book called 'The Tibetan book of Living and Dying' by Sogyem Rinpoche. It's extremely accessible and a truly wonderful distillation, explantion, and instruction manual for Tibetan Buddhism. I don't know much about Theravada, but will check it out now Thomas has mentioned it. Buddhism seems much closer in a way to Hermetic philosophy than any other belief system, and appears to have lost its way far less so than its more 'religious' counterparts.
