This is a debate between herself and Wendy McElroy which occurred at Brown University in November of 2014. The topic is sexual assault on campus.
McElroy argues for full due process for anyone accused of sexual assault on campus. She argues that such accusations should be investigated by the police and the criminal justice system, not college administrators. She also skewers the statistics that the SJWs rely on to argue there is a epidemic of sexual assault on college campuses.
Valenti's performance was awful. She is not effective as a speaker. She stammers and stutters. She also "uptalks" like the stereotypical millennial valley girl (even though she is a Gen X'er from NY). But all of that is just stylistic. Substantively, she was also awful. She relies heavily on Mattress Girl to make her arguments about "rape culture" (this was before it was revealed to be a hoax). She relies on the same tired old stats that McElroy just got though obliterating (and offers no reason why McElroy was wrong). She also implicitly invites people on campus to name and shame accused rapists (possibly subjecting them to mob justice) and notes that she believes in "civil disobedience".
Sadly, the college audience reserved its spontaneous applause moments almost exclusively for her tripe. Those poor sheeple, I feel sorry for how indoctrinated they are.
Valenti is now going on a full on copyright assault against anyone who has posted the video. This includes McElroy. I am not sure how Valenti could own the copyright in the video as I am pretty sure it was the University who made the vid.
So watch it while you can guys.
Somebody needs to download and transcribe it. It's a lot harder to kill document files flying around the Internet, and they'll show up better on Google searches because Valenti's name will show up again and again. If this was a lecture open to the public, it's in the public domain. There's no copyright over your appearance in public.

Man when I read the article in the OP I just laughed... loudly and heartily. It was in a public place so people were looking at me like I was nuts. I always tell women who complain about "street harassment" that they'll miss it when no one's doing it anymore. Here's proof.

Quote:Arguably, the federal push began in April 2011 when the Department of Education told campuses to comply with a new standard for adjudicating sexual assault if they wished to receive federal funds. The new standard deprived an accused of such legal protections as the presence of counsel and the right to cross examine an accuser. The criminal standard of "beyond a reasonable doubt" (99 percent certainty) was replaced by the civil standard of "a preponderance of the evidence" (51 percent certainty). A student could be found guilty of rape by the same standard of evidence used by traffic courts to adjudicate parking tickets.

Jessica didn't do that bad. The weakest parts of her speech were relying on examples and statistics that aren't true. Not just Mattress Girl, but Rehtaeh Parsons, who killed herself after pictures circulated of her having drunk sex at a party--tragic, but there was little to no indication of rape except by the 'all drunk sex is rape' standard. Jessica also claimed that CDC statistics show 1/5 women is raped or suffers an attempted rape during college. I follow this issue pretty closely and I have never seen hard numbers that support that, from the CDC or anyone else. (Maybe 1 in 5 counting an unwanted kiss or butt grab, or according to some shoddy survey with a low response rate, but not solid numbers for rape and attempted rape.)
But if you did not know that a good part of what she's saying is false, she'd sound pretty good. I wonder why she is trying to get control of the video? Maybe because she relied so much on Mattress Girl? But I bet she still believes Mattress Girl (or would say she does)....

It's not so much the fact that Feminists make poor choices that don't reflect reality and lead them to a point where they eventually realise they were lied to and manipulated by militant lesbians for political gain. It's more the fact that they always double down and try to lead other women into making the same life choices that have left them alone and miserable.
It's wilful-stupidity vs. outright evil.

This is exactly what I observe too. Another thing I observe is, there are too many young girls following their lead.

Copyright issue.
Valenti 'copyright issues' are more serious than she thinks, and shows that she does not understand what she is talking about.
You are completely correct in that if the lecture was open to the public, there is no copyright. It sounds like to me that her knowledge of the area is so little, that she does not even understand what she does not know. The other possibility is that she hopes that telling people 'she has a copyright on the video', that people will believe her and do what she wants. I have seen this tactic used a number of times in the past few years where a basically ignorant person will claim they have some right, or say 'their lawyer says' in an effort to get you to do what they want. One time I asked the person what the name of their lawyer was and they refused to tell me, meaning that the assertion that a lawyer told them this was complete bs.

Valenti's militaristic resentment all traces back to a masterful neg delivered to her as a child.
Quote:I was feeling that loneliness acutely at the time, because I was obsessed with a boy named Matt. Matt – the first in a long line of blond boys I would fall for – told me once that I would be so, so pretty if not for my big nose. All I heard was, he thought I could be pretty!
Alas, pretty was not in the cards. But luckily for Valenti, she grew tits, and she blossomed from an invisible ugly to a butterface with a full datebook.
Quote:As soon as I “got a chest”, as my mom would say, the taunts about my face stopped as boys became more interested in feeling me up than making me cry. I started to forget about my face and mean girls, and focused on the things my body could do and inspire. During summer break, a male friend whom I had known since childhood put his hand on my breast as we watched a movie in the room over from our parents, saying nothing. I remained frozen, unsure what to do. Wasn’t he supposed to kiss me first? I was 11.
From there, it was lecherous teachers asking for a hug and genuine perverts coming on her jeans on the subway. She loved every minute.

^ Call me cynical, but, by this stage, I'm incapable of seeing any Feminist Typist a Reliable Narrator. Everything is about deceit, hatred and emotional manipulation in the name of having power over others, so I'll choose to play the odds and just consider her book a work of fiction aimed at an audience sadder than her.

WNR (Would Not Read).
Every line from the article and her memoir.... it just seems so embellished. It just has me saying, "Really? ... really?" She talks about getting harassed on the same level you would see someone talk about from a 3rd World Country. I'm not saying, "Public Rape" doesn't occur in North America. But all these men on subways and teachers just seems... a little too much.

Valenti is just the symptom of underlying rot. There has been a new editor for about a year, after Runsbridger left. The readership, for the most part, also detests the feminist clickbait.

This article is a savage takedown of Jessica's new book, Sex Object.
Favorite paragraph: "What kind of fool would major in Women’s Studies? The kind of fool who loses her virginity at 14, goes off to Tulane, sleeps with her ex-boyfriend’s roommate, flunks out and then transfers to SUNY-Albany, that’s who. The only career possible for a Women’s Studies major is as a professional feminist, and there are only so many full-time gigs at non-profit “pro-choice” organizations to go around. However, the Feminist-Industrial Complex — the departments of Women’s Studies on some 700 college and university campuses across the United States — has a rent-seeking interest in promoting the metastatic growth of feminism, so the fact that many of their alumnae are quite nearly unemployable isn’t mentioned in the course catalog."

Is the article correctly quoting things that really happened?
So far I have only read less than 50% of the article and find it hard to believe the experiences and quotes are true. (Or I maybe don't want to believe that someone thinks conducting themselves in this manner is perfectly ok, normal, and even something to aspire to?) If they are true, why would she write a book about it?
As a small example:
Quote: We do coke with one of my women’s studies professors in her house when we cannot get ecstasy.
Yes, lets do coke with my boyfriend that I meet through my drug dealer in my professor's house, with said professor, and tell the world about i! (As a side note, I do hold a libertarian view on drug use, in that I believe it should be a personal choice left to the individual, but I do not believe it to be a good choice.)
I am also baffled at how her parents thought spending tens of thousands of dollars on a college education in women's studies was somehow going to be a good investment or result in anything useful to anyone. Did her parents not know what she was majoring in? (As another side note, I am baffled as to how women's studies got allowed to become a degree program at a number of schools, plus students taking on tens of thousands in debt that will result in no employment.)
