Yeah, it was classless. I guess he was more concerned with winning then the opinions of a bunch of butt hurt feminists and white knights. I say well played Kyrgios, if your opponent is so mentally weak that a comment like that can take you off your game then he is probably going to hear a lot more of it.

So a dude trash talks his opponent to to mess up his game..and some of y'all want the dude to pay money for it?

Sounds like something feminist would say.

It's a competitive sport.
Have you never tried to get in your opponents head?

Wouldn't be surprised if Hewitt (in his youth) or Tomic said it. Australian sledging is far harsher than English ribbing.

RE: "Kokkinakis banged your girlfriend, sorry to tell you that mate"
It is possible to be a winner without compromising your integrity.

It's one thing to have some banter between old adversaries who respect one another (eg the Warne (I think) exchange - 'Shane, why are you so fat?' 'Because everytime I bang your mum she gives me a cookie'). It's another to be deliberately petty and offensive.

If you're relying on the fact that you're in the public eye, with many spectators live and on TV, to ensure you escape the repercussions of unsolicited hostility, then that is a cowards move and to pull it shows a man of low character and limited wit.

I agree that if Wawrinka did let it get in his head then he allowed himself to be beaten cheaply and it also reflects poorly on him as a top tier sportsman.

Seriously, are men these weak stomached and pussified ?

You can't take some shit talking on the court, especially after the dude's been trash talking you ?

Sounds like some of ya'll got some thin skin.

You're at war on the field, psych ops is apart of it.

It's tennis. Basically the:

of competitive sports.

American football, rugby, wrestling, hockey, take your pick. It's easy to toss around fighting words when you're not risking physical retaliation for saying them.

The comments were unsportsmanlike, but at the highest level, one needs to be able to stay focused. If I am a rival player, I am paying attention. Now I know this guy can be rattled by some trash talk, so I will think of all sorts of nasty junk to spit at him. It is all about winning. It may not be honourable, but if you are Wawrinka, you cannot expect your opponent to be honourable.

It reminds me of the story of Larry Bird and Reggie Miller in the NBA. The legendary Bird is standing at the free throw line with a rookie Miller throwing a mild chirp. Bird looks at Miller and says something like "Are you kidding me?", and without taking his eyes off of Reggie, he sinks the shot. Miller would go on to prove he also had ice in his veins, when you look back at his career, especially some of those games in New York. The best players don't get rattled. They laugh in your face while they beat your ass.

Exactly. This is what I object to. A lot of people here seem to think that 'talking shit is just part of the game, no big deal'. To me this a big part of the problem with the modern world more generally - no one seems to think they should be accountable for what they say. All these people saying it's part of the game would whine like little girls if Wawrinka had stepped across the net and handed this guy a beating - 'oh he over-reacted, it was so disproportionate', yet it's the same principle of escalation. Some of the wisest advice I ever received was 'Don't start anything you can't finish'. That's exactly what this kind of shit talking is in most instances. It's easy to talk tough until you have to back it up.

Actions should have consequences, and being a tough-talking-toothpick should get you curb-stomped.

Although on the outside, it does seem like something that's excessive and a feminist would call for, but one should understand the history and tradition of tennis before you can understand why the fine was administered.

Tennis has always been a sport played by the middle-upper class, and as such has the notion of being a ''gentleman's sport''.

It's not a working class sport or sport with physical contact, so with that in mind, fans of tennis have every right to ask for Kyrgios (Who's a bit of a dick-head anyway) to be fined.

There's many ways to get into an opponent's head without resorting to outright crass and un-gentlemanly like behaviour and many players do it. For example Nadal takes about 40 second between serves when his opponent is leading or on an important point (And Nadal usually takes about 30 seconds anyway), players taking match time outs at crucial points in the match, players trying to seem injured etc.

Are you saying a two time grand slam winner ''can't take the heat''? Especially when the H2H record he has against the two opponents is something like 19-4 and 12-2 against him.

Taking a little longer to serve, taking a time-out, or faking an injury is a way that tennis players get inside each others head?

Not sure, but I think we're saying the same thing? No idea how Roosh in Canada fits into it. My point is really only that if you pick fights you should not be surprised or cry about it if you get beaten up for it. And that if you aren't prepared to back it up physically, like this little Greek chap clearly never expected to have to, then it's a bitch move.

Wawrinka should have handled business either by winning or by kicking the guy's arse.

Edit: I thinkI get what you're saying about Roosh in Canada. In which case yes, Roosh picked a fight with the people who control the narrative - to them this entire forum is a slap in the face with a white glove. I'm not in any way saying you shouldn't pick fights, just saying that you shouldn't pick fights unless you have the courage to see them through come what may. Roosh et al. have demonstrated that they possess this courage, and have made no attempt to hide, back down, or apologise, and quite rightly so - they have my full and unconditional support. But if you think the way we all call them ham planets, and mock their limited faculties isn't picking a fight, then I'd have to disagree. I'd say we all deliberately, and rightly, bate, provoke, and go out of our way to offend these people as our enemies, and we are quite willing to carry the fight to them and stand by our principles. With respect, I don't think the analogy is a strong one.

Have you ever played tennis to a competitive level?

It requires immense concentration, especially if you find yourself 'in the zone'. A lot of tennis upsets actually happen because one player is feeding off his adrenaline, and the favourite cannot do anything about it.

This isn't a place to be using the typical alpha/beta dichotomy.

Tennis isn't a sport where everyone is a dick to each other, it's a gentlemen's sport and in general no one likes the ''bad boys''. To me Kyrgios comes across as an insecure dick with his comments during press conferences and his demeanour on court. A total nobody who thinks everyone should give him respect, and an attention whore. A real product of the millennial generation.

Seems like the trashiness runs in those two.

Also his brother commented on what Wawrinka allegedly did backstage:

Poor by Wawrinka, shouldn't be physical with comments, he should have used Kygrios' comments to motivate him and bagel the idiot.

This is exactly the point. The guy talks shit, picks a fight, and at the first sign of the fight coming back to bit him has other people talking tough for him and is talking legal action rather than taking the consequences of his behaviour. Bitch move.

Everybody's assuming that one flippant comment caused him to lose the tennis match.

There are too many variables that could have caused him to lose - fatigue, serve was off that day, injury, run of poor form, opponent played out of his skin that day etc.

Has Wawrinka said "what he said threw me off and that's why I lost"?

He's been hearing stuff like this since his junior days.

Supposed 'gamesmanship' is exaggerated for media purposes.

RE: "Kokkinakis banged your girlfriend, sorry to tell you that mate"
Well we're talking about him aren't we, giving him a name and searching his name.

FYI

Wawrinka withdrew from the second round also - oh and did I mention it was taking place in MONTREAL ?

Hewitt works as Kyrgios advisor coach for some time, so things can only get uglier.

I always enjoyed the fact that tennis is "softer" than US Sports or soccer regarding provoking opponent or putting him off his game.
Things like delaying serve, getting medical or pee breaks, or imitating Sharapova screams during play - this was the norm. Serving against someone's body was considered a major offense.

There were some hot headed individuals like McEnroe or Nastase, or Safin in more recent history, but they seemed to be more hot headed type of guys, than calculated millenial dicks like Tomic or Kyrgios.

But then Australian "thugs" come and they try to push things down the toilet. I am actually quite happy to see some backlash against Kyrgios behaviour.

Not really surprised some RVF members are backing him and calling Wawrinka chode (guy who earlier this year beat prime Djokovic in one of the greatest French Open finals). I guess behaving like dick (especially when throwing some other guy under the bus) is what so called "Alphaness" is to some guys here (even some of them being highly repped).

RE: "Kokkinakis banged your girlfriend, sorry to tell you that mate"
Kyrgios is Australian by birth but he is not Australian in spirit. We have always prided ourselves on punching far above our weight internationally while being fair players and humble winners.

The classic Australian stereotypes that the world has grown up with came from a time when the vast majority of Australians were of British ancestry. We cling to these stereotypes still but the fact is that these famous traits are not endowed upon a person by simple virtue of being born on this piece of clay. In the future Australia, where descendents of the British will be a minority (eventually), this will be little more than a fond memory.

One of our most famous former Olympians, Dawn Fraser (who won the 100m freestyle at three Olympics in a row in the 50s and 60s), said as much and was absolutely pilloried by the PC media:

The fact is that Kyrgios is a dickhead and I feel no affinity for him whatsoever. He doesn't represent me or the country I love.
