An almost-40-year-old (single?) mother who writes for Jezebel walks into a tattoo parlor, asks for a neck tattoo and the artist refuses. Of course, she writes about it, putting him "ON BLAST." A tattoo publication asks him for his feedback. He calmly and respectfully eviscerates her mental hamster.

Goldfinger, I saw the worst tattoo ever last week - it was on a girl in NYC who had a cat tattooed on both of her calves - except the tattoo was so big most of her calves was just wrapped in black, over 6" in height I believe. I was hoping it was a leg warmer or something, but it was not. Tried to snag a pic but she was on a bike.

No, I think he is playing it smart. No one wants an emotionally unstable tattoo artist. Many of his clients, particularly in NYC, are going to be liberal hipster types. He is showing them exactly who he is -- someone who makes rational decisions in his craft, not a person with a political agenda or with any qualms servicing or caring for women.

He obviously turns down paying clients if the work violates his belief system. He is not trying to maximize profit at all costs.

He didn't refuse her service — he was ready to do the arm tattoos for her and her friend, but said he wouldn't do the tattoo on her neck.

Women like this think they're portraying themselves as victims of some terrible injustice. They only succeed at coming across as emotionally unhinged, petty, and with too much time on their hands.

Oh, and she's apparently a single mother. Imagine growing up under the auspices of this drama queen...

Most tattoo artists are very smart socially. You are dealing with multiple clients everyday in a very intimate environment. On top of that you have all the crazies, idiots and time wasters who come into your studio everyday. They can deal with several hundred people in a week if not over a 1000. This guy isn't being a pussy, he is looking after the name of his studio and himself. The above statement is professional and effective.

The bigger picture here is most tattooers just hate this type of customer. They are never happy, don't know anything about tattoo culture and give the studio a terrible reputation. This is her reaction not getting a tattoo. They know well to stay clear of people like this and not to be associated in anyway. These people destroy the reputation of a good studio. She is 40, unstable and her prior tattoos are the letter 'C' and 'ownlife'.

A tattoo studio is like a nightclub and you have to 'face control' your tattoos. Every one is a walking advertisement for that studio in the future. These guys will get grilled by people they would probably never tattoo anyway and the people who count (and actually are customers) will respect them more for sticking to their guns. The professional statement just keeps it classy and they can sit back and enjoy the free press.
