RE: Question about lifting and boxing
I've had so many people come into my gym for lessons having "taught themselves" via youtube. They are always awful and well on the way to developing nearly incurable technical problems.

Honestly, I feel this is bad advice.

Pay for a 1-on-1 to teach you the basics.

RE: Question about lifting and boxing
Did anyone catch the Joe Rogan Experience #650?

Rogan interviewed Nick Curson, a strength and conditioning coach known for working with UFC World Champion Rafael Dos Anjos and Russian boxer Ruslan Provodnikov.

Curson is completely against very heavy weightlifting for combat sports as he believes that it slows down the body. He advocates polymetrics like medicine ball throws and box jumps. According to him, polymetrics develop explosive strength which enable his fighters to move faster and hit harder.

My experience in combat sports is purely as a hobbyist but I'm inclined to think he's right.

I have a friend who fought Muay Thai at pro level. He has never lifted weights and he has a skinny endurance runner's body with little visible musculature. A bit like many of the Thais. I've held pads for him and he "punches like a fucking mule kick" [in the words of Mike Tyson].

RE: Question about lifting and boxing
Has anyone else noticed that Title is now franchising boxing gyms?

Granted calling them boxing gyms is misleading, they are ultimately the planet fitness of boxing, focusing on fitness boxing as opposed to creating actual contenders (sparring is not allowed, mit work is). However I went to one of their free sessions about a week ago, and damn that was an insane workout. Nonstop movement, even your "rest periods" contain squats, high knees, etc. And you ultimately end up doing 8-9 3 minute sessions of heavy bag work. Sure there are a bunch of fatties in there half assing the bag work, but if you go there and focus on working hard and keeping your hands up and continuing the move around during your inevitable rest sessions, you can get some massive cardio and punch work in. A couple hot chicks were in there too.

It is kind of mix of a P90x and boxing. I recommend it for getting into shape, although I recommend learning proper boxing form either from personal training sessions or attending an actual boxing gym as well.

I think its also a fantastic business move for Title. They can cater to the professional boxers as well as to the masses now. If they werent a private company I would definitely do some research and considering investing.

But while I'm here without reading any of it.

If you like to box only workout like boxers do because if you don't your muscles will get trained the wrong way and throw off your accuracy.

Also watch your punches and if you're having a problem connecting where you didn't used to you may be over doing it on weights.

Stay fast and agile which most body builders are not. That's why you can smack them around for fun when you want to.

Boxing has been standing watching the martial arts industry get rich for years, scratching their heads as to why.

Maybe they've finally figured it out.

RE: Question about lifting and boxing
Today's lesson kids is about being present/staying focused/don't be thinking about other fucking stuff while sparring

I came into the gym a bit animated and pissed off. My trainer and I did shadow sparring and the first round or two I couldn't get present. My brain was scattered and caught a bunch of shots. Even if they are not full power catching them in the face still sucks.

I am usually too focused and occasionally over think what he is telling me to do. Today was different in the sense I was clearly not thinkng about boxing but I was maybe overthinking the other thing that got me pissed off.

I guess I need to look at this as a sign of growth. But my performance today was a setback in my mind. I have been improving. The next six rounds went better. And I get another chance to improve the next we train.

I hope I only have to learn this lesson once.

RE: Question about lifting and boxing
No need to view it as a setback. I remember coming home after bad sparring sessions and feeling like quitting, but you get a good sleep, your mind starts piecing it all together, and then it's these times that you often learn the most.

RE: Question about lifting and boxing
Welcome to combat sports. I've had grappling sessions where I was on top of my game and rolling better than I ever had before. I'd leave feeling fucking amazing. Very next training session would be complete dog shit and I felt like a white belt again.

Sometimes it just goes like that. Get some good sleep, let your body and mind rest and the next session will probably be better.

What if I am 30 lbs overweight and have terrible cardio? Is it still okay to jump right in and start boxing? Or should I at least get my cardio up a bit, and lose a few lbs in the process?

You can get fit from boxing, you don't need to be fit to start boxing.

Tomorrow, tomorrow is a recipe for disaster.

Take action.

^^ this reminds me of some guys who came to my lifting club a while back and said that they'd come back when they get stronger...

You start lifting to get stronger, you start boxing to get fitter, not the other way around!

RE: Question about lifting and boxing
There are a lot of overweight guys at my gym. They just do what they can and they get better as they stay committed and watch their diet.

Just go do what you can. The go back again and keep at it at.

It isn't like they put you in the ring to spar on the 1st day.

At our gym there are also some treadmills, cycles, etc. So after you are wiped out do a few more mins of cardio on one of the machines.

RE: Question about lifting and boxing
Yes, it is another samsamsam boxing question. Sad

Been doing more sparring and in a weird situation I can't figure out.

How do you punch fast, without power?

The goal for me is to learn the rhythm of sparring, learn to move around, etc. And it is not to hurt someone who is trying to help me out with sparring.

But my trainer is quick as shit, when I throw slow, he just moves out of the way. And when he wants to barrage me, the shots come fast (but he doesn't have a problem controlling his power).

He told me not to close my hand when punching, that takes some of the power off. But I have hit him a couple times harder than I wanted to. I also have a height and weight advantage on him.

I just feel like in order to touch him because he is so fast/quick, I need to launch quickly and then somehow lessen the impact when I get there. All this has to happen in 2-3 feet.

With mitts I don't try to power every shot, but he also doesn't move the mitts out of the way Laugh

I've read some stuff on sherdog, but I'll be honest, I trust the guys on here more for honest answers.

Thanks.

RE: Question about lifting and boxing
For light sparring just be loose, and don't really sit down on your shots. It's kind of difficult to explain as the technique looks basically the same, but you're taking some of the edge off if you know what I mean. Also don't punch through when you connect. Try and get a feel for it on the bag.

Yeah, I don't really know how to answer this question properly either other than as Kieran said, to stay loose.

Practice I guess, as useful as that advice is.

RE: Question about lifting and boxing
A longer update today.

But first, I just want to thank everyone who has provided me honest answers to my random questions. I trust my trainer, but I am always trying to learn about other perspectives and you guys are so solid. Kieran, CBW, RioNomad, H1N1, Gio, AnonymousBosch (way back he spent some serious time PMing explaining boxing and fighting), MikeCF, Veloce for starting the thread. I am sure I missed someone and apologies for that.

I got back into real sparring today with someone other than my trainer. It has been about a year.

I did 4 rounds, with 2 different guys.

My one regret is that I didn't jump back into it sooner - nothing really replaces actual live experience. But everyone feels ready at different times.

Lessons:
1) CARBS - I really need to take some carbs in the morning - I am trying an aggressive weight loss program and felt it today. Prior to this, I was able to schedule my lifts the day before each day of boxing and the carbs I ate after lifting seemed to really help on boxing days, even if fasted (IF) . But this new program just gassed me
2) I am hung up on respecting the guys I know at the gym - we tried to moderate the sparring but escalated quickly. One of the guys tried to explain it to me like a basketball game, punching is just shooting baskets.
3) Seems like I only get aggressive once hit - I thought my defense was fine in the 1st round - but when I got gassed it started going bad (i.e. more hits) - which got me mad and wild - But I started landing some hard shots.
4) I really hoped it would slow down - meaning though it was full speed - it would slow down like in the movies, but it didn't
5) I need more real sparring practice. As silly as it sounds mitts and bags don't replace a live human being.

Bottom line - I loved the experience today though I didn't fare as well as I would have liked. I think everything is correctable (controlling myself and carbs). And I did take some shots that were surprisingly hard (sort of surreal). But I do feel alive and raw. Not as wild and free as I did the first time I sparred - that time felt like I was a caveman. But to step into the ring and give it my best shot, felt very rewarding.

And, how could I have a boxing post without a question? If you take a carb product (gatorade/sugar) before boxing, does it get in there fast? Or takes a while for those carbs to be available?

Once again, thanks to everyone here.

RE: Question about lifting and boxing
Lost 2.4kg of fat in the last few months since I took up boxing. A lot of it is diet related though, but I'm glad boxing helped me get there. Smile

samsamsam, you'll like this. At 71~72kg (around 157lb?) I'm currently eating 330g of carbs a day and still slowly losing fats. Plus I'm adding more carbs weekly. You do not need to starve yourself of carbs and sacrifice sport performance. I'm gonna write something about it in another thread.

Also just signed myself up for the club's exhibition / charity fights. It will be just a 3x 2-mins rounds but a good chance for me to get into it.

StrikeBack, I hear you but I am trying to get it down for a wedding coming up. If it wasn't for that I wouldn't be so aggressive. I went on a bit of an eating binge during a couple weeks off. And not much exercise at the same time. But I'd love to see what your thoughts are on it. Can you post the link of the other thread once you write it up?

I have never eaten this much green stuff for so many days in a row!

Achievement unlocked! Bleeding on sparring partner!

Caught one in the nose started bleeding. It wasn't a lot but I felt bad for the guys gloves. Lol. Just need to keep form. Even while moving. Been hit in the nose before this one was just right I guess.

Sparred three times this week and it is getting better.

Just need to stay with it. More experience will help.

I popped a couple donut holes for some quick sugar, it helped.

I love this shit. Boxing and donut holes Smile

I usually start with a fake, feign, or feint. (Basically, all the same thing but different people use different terms)

This could be done with my arms, legs, shoulders, and/or head.

I want to see how the other man reacts. I want see how athletic and fast he is. I want to see his habitual movements. His pace, timing, nuances, etc.

I would rather learn about his ability before exposing my own.

(07-10-2015 10:42 PM)samsamsam Wrote:  How do you punch fast, without power?

Depends how powerful your upper body is but generally speaking, the answer is to..

Punch with out using your legs as a source of power. Just throw from the shoulders and/or core. No leg power.

But, I dont recommend training to lower your own power. You should be trying to maximize your speed and power.

If your sparring partners cant handle it, get better sparring partners!

(07-15-2015 01:32 PM)samsamsam Wrote:  If you take a carb product (gatorade/sugar) before boxing, does it get in there fast? Or takes a while for those carbs to be available?

It depends what is in your stomach and what is in your system. (Your diet for the previous 48 hours, your bowel movements, your hydration, your sleep, etc.)

Stamina and energy is not something that happens spontaneously after one meal. Stamina and energy is a constant process that requires daily cultivation in a variety of areas. (Diet, rest, stretching, massage, water, nutrients, etc.)

Ideally, these things will be in place long before you start sparring.

Sparring should be a 72-96 hour process. A few days of good skill work, rest and nutrition prior to sparring; and a few days of proper rest, maintenance work, nutrition, etc. after sparring.

--

Also, I often like to eat quality fats instead of carbs or with a smaller dosage of carbs. Nuts and fruit, Avocados, etc. You might want to play around with quality fats in place of carbs or in combination with carbs to see how your stamina and "6pack" respond.

Processed sugar is almost always bad.

--

If I was training boxers, I would have them train a lot in sand, I love how quickly and efficiently it trains balance and the ability to transfer power up through the legs.
