Information goes both ways, guys. You transmit information, and you receive information. You are part and parcel of the new order of things, like it or not.

As long as you're not doing anything illegal, there's no reason to get paranoid about social media. Instead of hiding from it, you should be looking for ways to use it to your advantage.

You have more power than you think you do. You are part of the feedback loop. Jump into it, and start creating your own cycles.

As long as you take reasonable precautions, you should be all right. I think there is a lot of unwarranted panic going on about this stuff. Establish firewalls, don't reveal personal info, and that's about all you can do.

Instead of worrying about some dork monitoring you, you should be monitoring them.

My friends and I used to play a dangerous game back in the black out days. We would go to the club, get as many girls' numbers as possible while being heavily intoxicated, and the next weekend before we went out it would be a competition to see who got the most busted lizard the week before (that person lost). This Facebook feature has given me many hours of thorough enjoyment as I have never had the ugliest girl, but I have seen some massive land whales, some hugely fucked up faces, and a few midgits. Good times.

Everything is tracked for advertising these days.
I've have never had my recent number attached to my account.

So I don't pop up.

But I use the same thing and search chicks that give me their numbers.

I'm afraid of technology because it can be used against me.

Anonymity makes life less stressful.

Obviously some people here are more privacy oriented than others, but I personally don't feel comfortable with
people being able to learn about me through my online profiles.

Hasn't a dozen states already banned that practice? I wouldn't be worried about being unemployed because you deleted your Facebook account. Is Facebook even as popular as it was a few years ago?

Yes they are linked.

Facebook acquired Whatsapp and promised to keep it ad-free per the original founders' request. However, if your whatsapp number is linked to your facebook account it will drag out people you may know based on conversations on whatsapp.

Pretty sure it also recommends people from whatsapp groups that you're a part of, even when you never had any conversation with individual group members

For anyone below age 21 Facebook, is practically their social life (and its spawn insta, twitter, snap, etc) . They can't relate to a world without likes, status updates, etc. Everyone they know is on it, so leaving it is NOT a plausible option anymore and would make them a pariah. This is all by design, extreme peer pressure is almost as strong as a totalitarian mandate.

Facebook is a tool to increase surveillance, censorship, groupthink and political correctness.

By the time enough people wakeup (3-5yrs) and realize what Facebook has become enough to organize and push back against it, it will be too late. And people still think the site is "free", there is always a cost.

You can definitely use social networking to your advantage, but you can also very easily have it used against you.

If you're shrewd and know how to work it to your advantage, I say go ahead and use it. If you're less confident in your abilities,
it's not a bad idea to stay off. Personally, I feel less stressed knowing that I'm anonymous online. I also feel like the time and mental
energy I'd have to invest just doesn't justify the pay off.

Facebook can take photos, send texts and even record calls, all without your permission. Meaning you’ll have no control over what it’s doing behind the scenes whatsoever.

Even weirder, and perhaps even more unsettling, is that they can read personal data on your phone about both yourself and your contacts, and then pass the info on.

I would suspect they do, as it certainly in their interest to do so to help their advertisers.

Being able to upload customer emails/phone #s is Facebook edge. Most other display advertising systems rely on adding tracking to the user's browser, which is obviously problematic since people change browsers, multiple devices/phones, ad blockers, etc, etc.

With Facebook as an advertiser can bypass all of that by uploading the names and phone numbers of our customers - as Facebook targeting is done at the profile level rather than the browser. I get matches by uploading emails and phone numbers of people whose last order was over 10 years ago - often those are the most profitable. Best of all - it doesn't matter if the user is on a tablet, laptop, or phone - my ads can show up in the newsfeed regardless of the device since I've got their profile instead of a browser.

I can then take that list of let's say 50K customers - and find a "lookalike audience" of 1%, 5%, 10% of the US population - millions of people. Now I have a list of customers that have not yet bought my product but share the most common characteristics of my customers in terms of demographics, interests, etc. I have found these to be extremely effective as well.

Again - Facebook's key edge is their ability to match profiles of the customer list of names and phone numbers. The more they can match - the better. Once you understand this - even if you don't personally use their advertising system, at least you see the big picture of how they work as a company and as a user and will do a better job locking down your own account.

Even if the phone number is removed from your Facebook account, or associated with another app that uses Facebook - unless is specifically outlined in the privacy agreement with that app - Facebook can look and see it as a probable match since no other profile has registered that phone number and will still want to associate it as a potential match.

If you registered your profile in the past, I would set up a new profile and re-add the friends you want to add, and re-upload/re-tag photos if necessary. I'm doing this now myself because I just had a hot tiny 21 y/o asian that I cold approached and #-closed last weekend pop up in my "people you may know" email. Which is shitty because she obviously got the same email from Facebook, and I think I told her I had deleted Facebook because of a psycho ex girlfriend or some BS story. My only contact with her has been my SMS and I don't have my cell number linked to my Facebook! I thought I had this shit down and Facebook still got me. Even though it's not linked now, I probably did have my phone linked at some point in the past before I knew how all this shit worked.

WhatsApp contacts are definitely linked to Facebook since towards the end of last year.

I imagine that cross matching of accounts goes through the Google Play account, too. Or whatever the Apple equivalent is.

You have a good chance of your profiles not colliding if you maintain two different devices. Don't mix and match your real life public account with your player account on any one device. Separate Google Play account, phone number, e-mail, FB, twitter etc for your player account. Only one identity on a device.

Fear of technology isn't the problem, its the exploitative nature of these services over unknown users who know not the implications of what information they are allowing these services to use.

Some of the prior comments in this thread speak to an unwarranted fear of technology/fear-mongering...this is missing the point - we're not worried about big brother or guys at Facebook monitoring us. We just don't want lizards having access to our profiles, or even seeing that we have Facebook a profile. That's all this is about. The problem is that's getting harder to pull off these days due to the steps the company is taking to try to get you to friend as many real-life connections as possible with it's ever-more aggressive use of "suggested friends" pop-ups and "people you may know" emails. Those 2 fuckers are what is causing real problems for us, not some boogie man shit.

Also being familiar with friends who had false rape cases- I can tell you Facebook was the first things the cops dug into when the girl pointed to their profiles. It might not have caused a different outcome for my friends had Facebook not been in the picture, but it's certainly worth considering in an era where false accusations are the new fashion statement.

Whether you use Facebook or not is a personal choice - I won't deny there's uses for it to keep in touch with close friends and family and close connections.

But I think there's very little debate that if you are a man who is actively gaming, you are much better off not giving lizards access to your profile. Facebook by design wants you to friend everyone, and tie a valid email and phone number to your account. So its best to take precautions and be careful about what you do in there, or any of the connected apps (Instagram, WhatsApp, etc).

Facebook rules for guys actively gaming-

1.) Never give Facebook or any of the connected apps your phone number
2.) Never install the Facebook mobile app
3.) If you fucked up in the past on #1 and #2 - just cut your losses and get a new number or a new FB profile. Whether you remove from your account or not, it's still associated with your profile in Facebook's back-end database.
4.) Ideally use a completely separate number for lizards - Google Voice, etc


I'm not deleting my Facebook but if another man does the cost benefit analysis on this, and decides its more trouble than it's worth, I can respect that.

This happened to me lately and I was almost shocked to see "People you may know" pop up and display women who's names I don't even remember anymore or never even knew in the first place showing up on there. We just got drunk, fucked, and said bye. Like a good game of pick-up basketball.

The strangest part is that with some of them, we never even exchanged numbers. How does facebook know girls who aren't in my contacts list, who's number I don't have, and who I haven't spoken to in god knows how long.

The IT industry is on top of its game I suppose.

I’ve also had this happen to me, but the scary thing is that I have never given Facebook my phone number - it’s not on my profile. I have also never installed the app on my phone. I have accessed Facebook a few times by logging in on the browser in my phone.

These fuckers work pretty fast too. I managed to get a phoned number of somebody from OKCupid and we sent each other a few texts. A few days later she turned up in my “Do You Know” email. I didn't even know her real name until I saw in it the email. I Googled it and I found out where she studies.

This morning I got the name a of a woman I banged 5 years ago in the "Do You Know" email – back then I didn’t even have an android phone.
