Speaking in all honesty, I'm truly surprised she basically got away with this. She endangered her own child, she outright killed an elderly person - it seems like all factors were in place to thwart the expected pussy pass. If it was a 30 year-old guy she killed, I'd expect it. But a 72 year-old person... she still got away with it...

I get the feeling from the article that the age of the victim was used more of like a mitigating rather than an aggravating factor...as in, well he was old and not going to live much longer anyway...

Thing is though, an active 72 year old without chronic health problems can easily have a couple of quality decades left in him.

As for the result in this case, I think it probably is most likely a combination of jurisdiction and having good lawyers.

The good lawyers bit is crucial.

With a public defender, she would have gotten 3-5 years.

Jurisdiction is also huge, I'm guessing in nearby Virginia (harsh relatively new DUI laws) she would have gotten a much higher sentence.

You guys are still missing the point. If you negligently kill people with a car, you may get off scot free. This is pervasive in New York City, where the beneficiaries are usually MEN, and the losers are both men and women.

Or here, an Oregon man kills three children after running a red light, gets off with just a citation.

This is just a drop in the bucket. While I do agree that women, especislly mothers, often get lighter crime sentences, ridiculously light sentences are a very common feature of death by car.

You kill someone here while behind the wheel and they will put you under the jail.

Fortunately the cops have not totally killed the culture yet. They are working on it though.

Agreed the penalties for driving like an idiot are way too light for both men and women.

But about the "getting off scot-free" part - you're only referencing the light criminal penalties. If the perp has any money, you can bet they'll be in civil court getting sued for everything.
