On a previous visit to India in 2012, she and a female friend spotted another man masturbating while watching them from bushes at an ashram. They laughed at him and moved on.

When it happened to her second time as she waited for a train, she alerted fellow travellers and he disappeared.

But Ms Hemmings said that the latest incident “felt different” and affected her far more, making her nervous walking alone and avoid eye contact with strangers.

She told The Independent: “I found it really frustrating because I’m someone who really loves interacting with people and I really struggled because suddenly I was afraid to look at people.

“I kept on thinking: ‘Is it going to happen every time?’

“Of course it doesn't but for about three days I really found it difficult.” Ms Hemmings said she found the next three days in Mumbai difficult

After deciding that she would not allow the man and his “tiny penis” to affect her, Ms Hemmings decided to write about the experience and discuss it with others, which she said was “cathartic”.

The former Bournemouth University student said she had no idea of the impact her blog would have and hopes it will encourage other women to talk about their experiences of sexual harassment around the world.

“It could easily have provoked a really negative reaction but it’s been absolutely wonderful and so humbling that people are writing to me to say they are sorry,” she said.

“There are very few countries in the world I can think of where that would happen.

I've traveled to India a few times. After experiencing it, people will either love it or hate it. Personally, as a solo male traveler, I love the place, some areas more than others.

But when I've been hanging out/traveling with female travelers, you notice that sexual harassment of western females is very real. There have been several times I've had to push a local guy away when they touch a girl's arse, brush up against her for no reason, walk past and stroke her hair etc. Afterwards, the guy will often go back to a group of onlooking friends and they all stare with a kind of dull look in their eyes. I know we don't like the word creepy, but it's actually a very appropriate word for these experiences. I disagree and think this behaviour is endemic throughout the castes and socio-economic classes from Dalit to Brahmin, poor to rich. That was my experience in the country where educated guys I knew behaved at times in ways towards women that was pretty fucked up from a western point of view. The big story however is not some white woman getting jizzed on at a bus stop but the abuses that takes against Indian women in the back country in places like Madhya Pradesh or Bihar. These news stories are nothing more than Western propaganda designed to undermine Indians and Indian culture. While I don't disagree that weird and vile things happen, they are very small in number and committed by mentally deranged individuals. Having said all this, again I agree that many poorer Indian guys will actually harass women on the streets verbally. Verbally harass does not mean masturbate in the bushes, which is a comical invention.

White women and Westernized/Urban Indian women suffer more from this harassment than regular Indian girls. This is because these girls are foreign to many of these men who come from really downtrodden villages - it's like seeing an alien.
