I grew up mostly as a Nu-Metal guy(Which is unpopular with Metalheads, but I don't give a shit). Mostly Korn, Rage Against the Machine, and Deftones type stuff. But I also like Thrash stuff like Early Metallica, Anthrax, Suicidal Tendencies and Stoner Metal.

My favorite Deftones song.




Baroness. A really sick Stoner Metal band. They have a similar sound to Mastodon.

My favorite Deftones song used to be my own summer or engine no. 9. Then I heard Royal. What a blast in the face that song is. I could listen to it on repeat for over an hour and never get sick of it.

Metal was what I listened to all through high school. These days, I am more into other stuff but I do revisit from time to time, mainly just classics. I like old school death metal (I have a lot of trouble getting into 'tech' and 'brutal' and 'slam' death metal), some old school black metal, a lot of thrash, NWOBHM-type stuff, doom metal, etc. I also like a lot of extreme punk, like crust, grindcore and powerviolence.

Lately I have been listening to a lot of the album Blutsabbath by Belphegor. I think it is their best work by far, replete with amazing riffs and thick with atmosphere but also nearly devoid of the cheese that dominates their later albums. Also been listening to a lot of In Battle There is No Law by Bolt Thrower, really the perfect intersection of crust punk and metal. This thread has reminded me I need to get back into Hellbastard and Hellkrusher... haven't listened to those guys in ages. I highly recommend Hellkrusher - Wasteland, it should appeal to metal fans as well even though it is more on the crust side, particularly if you like the old 90s Swedish death metal sound.

Any of you guys like Volbeat? They really have a knack for writing heavy riffs, but unfortunately their records get watered down with some country influenced/ballad type stuff. The songs they did with Barney from Napalm Death and King Diamond are probably their 2 best.

You just dropped a whole load of my personal favourites there. The Lykathea Aflame album is especially impressive, nothing else quite like it and it isn't exactly easy to get into for some. I liked it straight away but I can see how it might not "make sense" to some metal listeners. Its basically happy death metal to put it crudely. Very great stuff though.

I was lucky in that I discovered The Metal Archives shortly after getting into metal. The site allows you to sort albums by rating, and I used to spend hours on Saturday mornings searching for albums with multiple perfect scores so as to not waste what little money I had back in high school on mediocre bands.

I remember scrolling through the list, getting to Lykathea Aflame, and seeing like 10 perfect scores for Elvenefris, which was incredibly rare on the site (we metalheads are incorrigibly picky). I ordered the CD that day, and played it so often I wore it out and had to order a new one two years later. One of my favorite albums, of any genre, to this day.

Any Devin Townsend fans here? Most metalheads are probably familiar with his Strapping Young Lad group, but he's put out a bunch of stuff under his own name, along with The Devin Townsend Band and Devin Townsend Project.

I'm a big SYL fan, but his other work is more progressive and melodic, while retaining that characteristic Devy intensity. Catchy AND crunchy. My favorite albums are all older ones: Accelerated Evolution, Ocean Machine: Biomech, Synchestra, Terria, and Physicist.

I'd link to "Earth Day", possibly my favorite song of his (off Terria), but at nine and a half minutes it isn't the most accessible. Here's my favorite off Physicist:

The first two Strapping albums are probably two of the most aggressive albums ever recorded. You can tell the dude was fucking pissed at the time and was a good enough musician to really capture that frustration and aggression.

I always thought the Deftones never really belonged in that category (I started listening to them not too long after Adrenaline came out), but they started to get popular around the same time as bands like Korn, Limp Bizkit, and Static-X so they got lumped in with those bands and played some gigs on Ozzfest with other nu-metal bands at the time.

Especially if you listen to some of their newer albums like Saturday Night Wrist and Koi No Yokan it doesn't really sound nu-metal at all. Their big hit that put them into the mainstream "change" is actually a fairly slow atmospheric song... not very nu-metal. They really do have their own distinct sound.


Can you picture any of those other bands writing a song like Cherry Waves?

To be honest, I didn't expect anyone here to know about Demigod. Most of the metalheads I meet do not even know who Demigod is. Anyhow, for anyone that likes Demigod, you should check Adramelech.

They also hail from the some country as Demigod, Finland. I also think that the some of the former members of Demigod founded or played in Adramelech or vice versa. However, I am not too sure about that. Nonetheless, they are the only band that I know of that has a similar style to Demigod. Their albums Psychostasia and Pure Blood Doom are really good, and should be checked out by anyone who likes Demigod or death metal in general.





Also, how many of you guys are fans of old school death metal (late 80's - early 90's)? Old school death metal is probably my favorite genre in metal, with thrash/speed a close second.

Also, I can't believe that Bathory hasn't been mentioned yet. RIP Quarthon.

Are MOD any good? I think its the same fat singer from SOD but without Scott Ian on guitar? Exodus? Venom? Random bands that I have heard about but never researched and listened to.

Exodus I just like the Bonded By Blood. The last three Overkill albuns are quite good.
