I'm with Rio on this. A lot of guys come to the Philippines expecting... I don't know... Nirvana? The Promised Land? Shangri-la for sex and relationships? Maybe the perfect woman that will bend over backwards at their every whim... The stark truth is that yes, Filipinas are going to be more feminine and caring than your typical Western cow, but they are still women too. And women all over the world will be true to the programming that is imprinted upon them from thousands of years of evolutionary psychology. They WILL use sex and their femininity as a commodity or weapon, they WILL by default have more emotional guile, and they WILL seek access to your wealth, resources or power. It is in essence what all women have been programmed to do! That's why we have these forums. So that men like us can use logic and learn from each other's experiences and apply it to be a little less beta every day and become a bit more alpha as we strive towards our goals.

Guard your hearts well, my brothers, for it is the wellspring of life.

That's not quite really the case, is it? Regularly?

Life is cheap in Philippines. But tourists or foreigners don't get killed left and right unless they go around asking for it.

Rule number one, do not be arrogant. Arrogance is an unforgivable sin in the eyes of the Filipino. We are a humble people, colonized by the Spanish, bought by the Americans, and occupied by the Japanese. These days, China is trying to bully us into submission. We've endured all that while smiling. But everyone has limits. A number of years ago, I read an article about some arrogant Filipino actor who was notorious for beating his women. He ended up getting into a relationship with the daughter of a general who had dubious reputation. The actor didn't care. He beat the daughter one day. He thought he was untouchable just because he was in showbiz. Well soon after he, um... "fell" from his high rise condo. People whispered about it, but at the end of the day, they didn't care. He was arrogant anyways.

Rule number two, do not be a target. If you walk around the slums, standing out with your gold watch and expensive shoes, and you end up getting stabbed and robbed naked, I cannot really say that I'll have any remorse for you. Learn to adapt and understand the rules of where you currently are...

Rule number three, well... let me illustrate rule number three with this joke:

A guy saw a kid eating some sweets on the street one day. He approached the kid and said, "Hey, eating all that candy isn't good for you." The kid looked up at the guy and replied, "Oh yeah? My grandfather lived to be a hundred!" The guy got a confused look on his face and inquired, "Your grandfather ate a lot of candy?" Without missing a beat, the kid said "Nope. But he minded his own fucking business."

Over in the comments there, there is a pretty angry long-term expat ranting at guys like 20Nation and Roosh (and this forum, basically) for sending hordes of guys to the Philippines and changing the dynamics there. Claims that 2014 was a turning point and the place is already just about ruined.

He could have a point. Dynamics can change quickly these days - word is that Bangkok is nothing like it was even 5 years ago. Although the advent of smart phones worldwide could be changing things on the ground in the Philippines as much as a greater number of western men visiting.

These Philippines threads are literally the same discussions over and over again. We had almost this exact debate around page 50 of this same thread.

You've had guys like Scott Free, DirectDanger, YardDog, Sp5, and PacFan -- with something like 20+ years combined on the ground and dating Filipinas -- drop knowledge all over these forums. Notice that most of those guys experiences and opinions tend to align, for the most part.

But guys would rather listen to the next 5 random guys who spend a month in Makati.

That's not a shot at dreambig either. I like this posts. But bro, if you want to daygame and meet quality women, get out of Makati. It makes absolutely no sense to be there, based on what you seem to be looking for. There are multiple other cities just within the metro with huge populations, nice malls (nicer and bigger than Makati, in fact) that would be much better suited for that.

To the guys that want to know the real deal on the Philippines, read through the posts of the guys I mentioned, as well as a few other members who have shared some good insights, like calwinston, Onto, Spaniard88, and myself. Almost anything you want to know about the country has already been written.

That's actually pretty funny.

Manila is definitely different. I saw a huge change when I went back a year later.

Everything had gone up in competition.

You actually have guys dressed well in the club scene that have some clout.

On the other hand, there was never any salsa dancing at the whore bar Havana Club so some things don't change.

As far as murders go you are probably more at risk in Phils than in suburban USA.

If you go to bars and drink, and are out late where there are drunk people, than that probably is a bigger factor than which country you are in.

There's a State Dept page where some deaths are reported.

http://travel.state.gov/content/travel/e...eaths.html

If you have no one close who knows you are there, and don't have updated contact info, there are probably more people who are murdered and dumped by jealous rivals, and it never gets reported to anyone. But even so, there's thousands of foreigners here and in 2012-2014 the above page recorded about 10 homicides, so assuming it's 5-10 times that it's not extremely risky.

A lot of the murders are not in Manila or Cebu, since the disproportionate amount of foreigners are in these two cities I think they are relatively safer.

Almost as many suicides as murders, older white men are the most likely to commit suicide of any demographic group, so a lot are probably just retirees who get sick of living. Or murdered by wife for inheritance.

If you piss off the wrong person in PI they will not forget it.

You hit on the wrong girl, drunkenly disrespect the wrong guy etc.

The local government doesn't care about foreigners and will almost always side with the filipino no matter how right you are.

When I was there last two guys were skateboarding in the fort, some woman marshal with zero authority to do anything tried to take a skateboard. The guys obviously wouldn't let her take it, other marshals joined in and beat them up. By "marshal" I mean paid security guard.

Local govt ended up charging the two guys with additional bs.

In the phils the girls may like you, but the men resent you. If you try and do business their and it in anyway impedes on what they think is theirs, you're getting shut down. Some exceptions are call centers.

Filipinos claim to be humble, but they are some of the most stubbornly prideful people you have ever seen. They will cut off their nose to spite their face, but if they can hurt you after some perceived insult they will.

They are very emotional, and once you understand that, they can be very forgiving or understanding.

But using reason? Forget it.

Fisto, I think this can be said for a significant part of this world. You are correct though, in the Philippines there is a culture that puts importance on 'shame' and saving face. Not to the extent that it is in Japan, but it is still present. Pissing people off is more closely related with shaming them in public or in front of their circle/peers/subordinates by hitting (and succeeding) with their girl, disrespecting the wrong guy etc. When you combine that culture with the setup for a third world country wherein the laws are less civil and less enforced than those of the West, then you have a recipe for what occurs.

(05-17-2015 12:44 PM)Fisto Wrote:  The local government doesn't care about foreigners and will almost always side with the filipino no matter how right you are.

I believe this not to be completely accurate. The local government, first and foremost, cares about itself. As far as I have experienced, while the natural tendency is to side with fellow Filipinos, the local government will side with whichever party advances its interests, whether they are individual interests or collective interests. Officials will side with someone who has more power, money, influence or can somehow benefit its goals. If by siding with a Filipino against a foreigner, they can garner more approval and support from the populace then that is what they will do. If the foreigner *tactfully and covertly* offers a bribe, then the official will weigh the practicalities and if the bribe is enough, then the foreigner will get off the hook and the official is a bit richer for it. It's really quite a practical way of life if you look at it through that lens.

When I was fresh off the boat and living in Michigan over a decade ago, I remember my officemates complaining about the recent news. The governor of Michigan was caught drunk driving by two local cops. Instead of arresting him, they escorted him home. I remember being perplexed by the angry reaction my American coworkers had about this. In my line of thinking, "Why wouldn't the cops escort him home? If that happened in the Philippines, they would be risking their lives, their careers and their families by shaming the governor..."

The take away for you guys in the Philippines is: don't attract unwanted attention and also have some money for insurance. Oh, and bribe early before more people get involved. If or when you have to bribe, I would do this: Look at the official's eyes and hold it for a moment. Very calmly say, so that only he can hear, "Is there any way we could talk about this?" while holding your wallet. Remember, in Eastern culture, your non verbal communication speaks volumes louder. Be tactful and indirect and you'll find that negotiations will ensue as to the price of walking away. Always appear to be losing more of what you actually have.

Have you been to the provinces or suburban areas or are you referring to people living in Manila? Of course, in the capital, you'll have a lot of prideful people. I see some in California and elsewhere too. They're not all like that as I know folks here in San Francisco that are incredibly lacking any form of hubris. I'd say, usually either the people connected with the rich families or the Filipinos who think themselves better than the rest of their people simply because they have a chance to live and earn abroad are the ones like what you describe above.

But if you move away from the Metro Manila area, you'll find that a good deal of people in the provinces live simple lives. Waking up at sunrise, tilling the fields or setting out to fish, they endure back breaking work to sustain their families and put their kids through school. They treat their elders with respect and deference and will often care for them until their death. You'll find that even suburbanites or middle class Filipinos try to keep things simple as well. Which is why many of us who have spent significant time in the Philippines encourage people on here that are looking for LTRs, etc. to venture out from the cesspool of Manila and check out the girls that aren't riding the foreign cock carousel.
Fisto 路 2015-05-17 17:07:00 路 #1692
so basically, everything I just said was true, including the little comment that I should get outside of the cesspool that is manila and stop dating girls that only fuck foreigners?

Lol pride hurt recognized

I've been all over your country. You can say what you want, but if some white guy thinks he can move into some place in the province, maybe marry a Pilipina and own some land, that guy will lose whatever he invested and maybe his life and a thats after he has to support his wifes whole family.

The Phil is great for banging girls, diving and seeing say El Nido and little else.

Filipino men are perhaps the most scheming and untrustworthy people on the planet. They will even tell you "you can rarely trust a Filipino" but that's only so they can infrstiate themselves.

A filipino will lie to you, you can point it out that they are lying, and you are the asshole.

Why? Because you made them lose face.

I hung out in Davao with some older, long-term expats. Since I was new, they were telling me about the city, etc. and of course the DDS (Davao Death Squads) came up. I asked about it and they said, the DDS cannot touch foreigners. The ex-pats also felt that they had a higher level of safety than the locals because the Govt of Davao wants foreign investment, etc. so it's known to leave the foreigners alone.

That said, Mayor Duerte supposedly hates Americans, and it's a law that a foreigner must always carry their passport or a copy thereof, to show if asked. If you don't have it, you are supposed to get escorted out of the city immediately.

I became friendly with a long-time local councilman there, he knew I was American and was very nice to me. This man is quite close to the Mayor and of course I bought him a very nice gift before I left to thank him for his graciousness. He thanked me and said with a smile, "Well, you didn't have to do that, but everyone knows I simply can't refuse a nice gift". And we both had a great laugh over that.
Onto 路 2015-05-17 17:40:00 路 #1694
I guess I should relay some of the negative things I heard from the elder ex-pats as well. Like anything, there's another side of the coin.

Mayor Duerte's son is a bit of a hot-head. The example given was he once pulled over an old foreigner who was driving down the road because it was perceived he cut in front of him or something like that. He pulled the ex-pat out of the car and put a gun to his head and yelled at him. This was an older (60s-70s expat that had a heart condition). Nothing happened, but the ex-pats do currently worry what will happen when the Old Man dies and "Sonny" comes into power.

Another ex-pat who had been married 3 times in the Phils told me about the envy local people in his neighborhood had for him because he was able to own the best house on the street.

That said, I've heard stories from these ex-pats about their Pinay ex-wives who would still do everything they could for their husbands "after" the man divorced them. Including helping him keep the home he bought, help with his business, etc. That astounded me, because in America women who divorce usually follow a scorch-the-earth policy when it come to ex-husbands and their children.

These men had children with their wives and I'm sure they also didn't try to leave them high and dry. The women seemed to take divorce quite well so long as you treated her well. One common complaint among them was that their wives would always put their family's first before him.

This is just my observation though, and from a very small sample size

This is a pretty good movie - based on a true story and sums up a lot of stuff about the upper class.

The moral of the story, like Scott Free said:

"A guy saw a kid eating some sweets on the street one day. He approached the kid and said, "Hey, eating all that candy isn't good for you." The kid looked up at the guy and replied, "Oh yeah? My grandfather lived to be a hundred!" The guy got a confused look on his face and inquired, "Your grandfather ate a lot of candy?" Without missing a beat, the kid said "Nope. lol at that one.

Foreigners being required to carry their passport is not exclusive to Davao or even the Philippines. It's the norm all over the country and in several other countries as well. Even in the US you're required to carry ID as a native, and a passport if you're a foreigner.

This is an example of why you have to take what these expats say with a grain of salt for a variety of reasons. A normal law being used as proof of an individual politician's hatred of foreigners.

Hey, maybe he does. I don't know. It really wouldn't surprise me if he had some form of resentment, to be honest, as even now the American government is meddling in Mindanao and causing a lot of problems and violence.

But even with the incident with his son, upper class Filipinos do that kind of thing to other Filipinos all the time. And that's assuming the expat wasn't exaggerating or doing something shady in the first place, as many of them do.

The same can be said of the government's overall treatment of foreigners. The law is corrupt here. Most murders go unsolved, even of fairly powerful Filipinos.

Yet when it happens to a foreigner, people are in an outrage and use it as proof that the government hates foreigners. That would be an example of something many locals would perceive as arrogance.

You really have to take some perspective. In the US, I can sit at the bar and mind my own business and there's still a chance some random guy tries to pick a fight with me for no reason. If there's an altercation at a more urban club, people immediately scramble to the parking lot to "pop the trunk" (get their machine guns).

Aaron Hernandez, the former NFL player who recently got convicted of murder, was allegedly driven to kill two men because one of them spilled his drink.

On a somewhat related note, there was a story I read recently that had an interesting take on the recent execution of the "Bali Nine" group sentenced to death in Indonesia for drug trafficking.

The Philippines president appealed to Indonesia's in a way that was humble and allowed the latter to appear strong and merciful by granting a pardon. The French and Australian leaders condemned the Indonesian government, threatened them, and generally raised a lot of hell.

One presented it as a favor, the others as a demand.

The Filipina involved was released, while the Australians and Frenchman were put to death.

It serves as a good example of the difference between the Western and Eastern mindset.

I am guessing I have had more experience with the Police than almost any of you guys. Because I drove a motorcycle I was pulled over at check points dozens of times. I never once had my passport or a copy of my passport on me.

The police in the Philippines compared to Thailand and Indonesia where very polite and not nearly as corrupt. They would ask for my documents such as drivers license and registration. Then often times just want to chit chat and be friendly.

This happened mostly in Manila but also when I went on longer rides to Cavite, Batangas, etc...

In comparison to other SEA countries the Philippines by far had the friendliest Police I had ever experienced.

From worst to best Police I have dealings with would be...
Indonesia
Thailand
Philippines

^ Yeah, I've had police tell me that you were required to carry ID in the US, but it seems that's not accurate after I looked it up. Thanks for the correction.

And I've never been asked to show my passport or told I needed it either. For that to even be an issue, you'd probably need to be doing something stupid to begin with.
