Defence is great within context.

In my opinion boxing is an offensive sport. Either knock out your opponent, or get knocked out.

It should only go to points when both parties have given their all. Playing the points game is the cowards way out.

Was there a lot of booing at the end when Mayweather jumped on the ropes? Couldn't hear it properly.

Key word there is "Colombians." Gambling is a terrible habit which ruins people's lives, yet all it has done is make my life better.

And I am now kicking myself for not going through with the bet!!! Mayweather truly is pretty much a guarantee to win every fight. The best of this generation no doubt!

RE: POLL: Mayweather vs Pacquiao - Who Will Win?
So many people, the casual and new boxing fan, will have been watching Floyd for the first time ever this morning...and I'm pretty sure they will have been shocked.

They were no doubt expecting Tyson, Ali, Foreman or RJJ; a boxer who, at some point in a big fight, looked capable of putting his man down.

Mayweather just did what Mayweather does. Clinical, effective, dare I say it...boring to the armchair fight fan.

All I can say is that I'm glad I watched this fight in Thailand where I didn't have to get up at 4am or have to shell out any money whatsoever to watch.

(This coming from a massive boxing fan, former boxing journalist and all round lover of the Queensbury Rules).

The result was predictable.
Now if only this fight was staged 6 years ago. We'll forever wonder.

My entire FB wall is filled with ppl dissing Mayweather and saying Manny got robbed. Personally, I think everyone only wants Manny to win because he's the nice guy while Mayweather's an ass.

Really the amount of MP dickriding is staggering, considering - overall - that despite their images - theses are two men who 99.9% of the audience will never meet and cannot relate to.

The better fighter won.

RE: POLL: Mayweather vs Pacquiao - Who Will Win?
Just watched the torrented show this morning after carefully avoiding all media.

What a let down!

Mayweather has awesome defense but it seems he wanted to win on points from the first round on. It was 95% defense and 5% offense. Of that 5%, 75% were jabs to keep Manny away. I highly dislike this "fighting" style.

Also, that teasing style of lowering his defense gets really old, real fast. There was only one champ that could get away with that style. British Chris Eubank.

9/10 wouldn't watch Mayweather again.

Manny couldn't get through Mayweathers defense but at least he tried to actually box a match.

I knew Mayweather was gonna do what he usually does. And Pac just got worn out after the middle rounds. Mayweather is one of the most clinical punchers I've ever seen and had a staggering 50% punches landed. Which is one of the reasons why he won the fight.

I don't get the great expectations of this fight. Two boxers with this amount of money swilling around were not going to do just one round.

Really? We see the same fight? I just watched the fight (avoided news and downloaded HD torrent), and I am more of a Manny fan, but I didn't see it as close at all.
Floyd dominated the fight from start to finish.
He may not be the greatest human, but he's an almost flawless boxer and a fantastically conditioned athlete (and when you take into account that he's 38, it puts him in a 1 in millions category of eliteness). I was impressed.

Mayweather fought his fight. As noted in this thread he was defensive and this was a typical fight for him. Yea he didn't brawl it out but thats how he usually fights. I wouldn't have expected him to fight differently especially when he's fighting for millions of dollars.

If you want to see a real brawl put 2 mexicans or a mexican and a filipino in there, they'll fight to the death for less than a million.

RE: POLL: Mayweather vs Pacquiao - Who Will Win?
Mayweather isn't really the problem with boxing though. The sport itself has problems and Mayweather is exploiting them. The rules don't say Mayweather has to fight the most entertaining fight, but they do say how points are scored and that's what's being gamed. I respect Mayweather's hustle of the system as well as his technical skills.

Mayweather and Pacquiao are bigger names than boxing, and that's where UFC has really blown boxing away. UFC has big names, but none are bigger than UFC itself is. UFC is a brand that tells people to expect a certain level of fighting, and as such people can be reasonably assured of getting some entertainment value out of a card. Boxing has no such brand identity, so they lack the ability to push the kind of fighters that fans would love to see without overhauling the rules.

As a guy who never saw a boxing game before but got hyped for this, I agree with some of the previous comments. We thought we were gonna watch something like in the movies but this was just a technical clinical fight, i dont think boxing gained a lot of followers yesterday.

It really does take another fighter or boxer to be able to appreciate Floyd's amazing skills. He is alot like Emmit Smith is to the NFL. Many think other running backs were the best ever, but Emmit does have the rushing yards record. Emmit would run out of bounds to avoid unnecessary damage. He played for longevity not to be an entertaining gladiator. Anyone that studies football alot can appreciate the innovations Emmit brought to football with his style of play. The average fan really does not care because he was a boring runningback to them for not crashing into people nonstop, like Marion Barber for example.

I loved the masterful display of footwork and boxing put on by both guys really. Manny made some adjustments and was not 100% one dimensional like he usually is. I will be going back to watch the fight again at slower speeds just for my own intellectual curiosity and for teaching material for the students I still give private lessons to.

I don't doubt for a moment that Mayweather's promotions operation can hype up a fight, and Pacquiao fans will buy in again hoping to see Pacquiao avenge the "robbery." Boxing as it exists now is a hype game.

It's Exactly what I thought it would be. Floyd wipes the floor and now all the haters are out in force talking about the man running. It did teach me though that people rather a lovable loser than a brutal, confident winner.

RE: POLL: Mayweather vs Pacquiao - Who Will Win?
I think people are forgetting that Mayweather is the champion and Pacquaio was the challenger, meaning Pac needed a knockout or a dominant display to win. He had neither so the Mayweather retains.
Not jumping on the Mayweather bandwagon but I expected more from Pacquaio.

Kai - Emmitt Smith was a joke, his offensive line should be in the hall of fame. Dickerson, Payton, Brown, O.J and I could go on, were in a different class to him.

I actually enjoyed the fight. I like a so-called technical, strategic fight like that.

I don't think Mayweather dominated Pacquiao, but he certainly won. Pacquiao simply couldn't get past Mayweather's defense.

As much as some experts seem to think that Pacquiao was a tough matchup for Mayweather because he's a southpaw and is normally highly aggressive, I think he just couldn't overcome Mayweather's skills and size/reach advantage. For Mayweather to lose, I think it will take a bigger fighter who can break through his defense.

Most importantly, here are the ring card girls:

These lighter weight class with miniature boxer and huge ass gloves it's much easier to be a defensive fighter. You see how Mayweather can just huddle up, not do anything, and Pacquiao can pound away and still not get through those huge ass gloves. Just my opinion, they should have smaller gloves and not pull their shorts up to the chest with huge padded elastics. There no freaking room to get a body shot in either.

The only way to get a clean shot is when the opponent makes an offensive move.

Whatever. Mayweather is a very smart guy, smart athlete, took advantage of the rule and the system and won.

I am like Mayweather. I bet with my head, not my heart and won $100 Smile

Great point - UFC can pull people without famous fighters per se, but boxing just doesn't. Seems like MMA is inherently more engaging and entertaining, thanks to its variety and volatility.

The most interesting part of the fight was how people responded to it. You had all the celebrities who showed up because a seat at the fight was proof you're a person that matters. And then most people watching found the clinical style of fighting boring (me included) because they don't know boxing that well.

As Teddy Atlas says "Boxing is the sweet science not brtual savagery."

You guys aren't entertained by a guy weaving, ducking, and dodging an onslaught of punches?

Floyd reacts to punches before they are even thrown and always throws a counter punch at the end.

Yeah he doesn't stay on the ropes and runs away from them, but that is harder to do than what people think and shows off his incredible skill.
