There's certainly a better way of doing it, offering transportation to and from the job site, set up the necessary framework to help transition temp workers into permanent employees and of course free coffee come to mind. People are showing up at 05.30 for the possibility (not guarantee) of work, the least you can do is give them a mug the other black stuff.

I'd think that the most difficult thing would be to set up a network of contractors who need temp workers, you'd need a lot of contacts for this. Also let's be honest your average client is going to be a less than reputable character for the most part. You'd be dealing with a lot of flakes and no shows.

I randomly ran into RVF oil sands member Habsguy on a shut down in Fort Saskatchewan today, that's the second time that has happened, the first time it was Jack Of All Trades who I ran into on a shut down in Red Deer. Things are still pretty busy with all of the big shut downs going on, I should be in Etown for another two weeks then I'm supposed to be heading to some butt-fuck place two hours north of Slave Lake to work on the construction of a natural gas plant up there. It should be a good gig, 14/7 and apparently the camp is brand new and state-of-the-art (I'll believe it when I see it!) and it will last for about five months, which is perfect as I'll get cashed up then fuck off to a 3rd world shit hole again for the winter!

Yeah buddy. I'm working just outside Edmonton on a 14/7 best money I've made yet. But our contracts have come due at this shitty oil price time so contractors are trying to nickle and dime us!

I have started to listen to some investment information.

They did a segment on oil and said that low priced oil could easily be the new normal for the forseeable future. The reason being that so much Exploration and Drilling work was done with cheap credit. Eventually this debt is going to force some producers to drill at a loss just to service their debt.

They also talked to some of the big players in the oilsands. Many of them are determined to mine record levels of production this year, despite the price. Probably means that some of the smaller players are going to fall by the wayside.

I have a feeling that all of this is going to mean a very slow season for the Exploration side of the industry. However it could be a busy season for anybody in infrastructure. They are going to need some place to transport and store all this oil.

It's probably best not to listen to the fear mongering. Some ''experts'' said it was going to bottom out at $20-$30 a barrel, others say its going to jump back to $150. The truth of it all is that nobody knows shit, otherwise they would have seen this dip coming.

Oil is not gonna stay low, it'll be up to at least 75-80$ by mid 2016. That is my opinion from working in the industry and from talking to lots of people. Certainly more than all those journalists will ever talk to.

Well, from the first paragraph of that article: At the latest Casey Research conference, respected investment analyst Porter Stansberry stood at the podium and predicted that the price of oil will fall below US$40 per barrel within the next 12 months. Part of his reasoning revolves around the impact that the shale gas revolution has had in the United States – he believes a similar thing will happen with oil. Isn't that exactly the reason that has been stated for oil dropping over the past year? Its really hard to say, I'm impressed that it jump up in the past couple of months, hopefully it keeps climbing but I don't think that we'll see it hit $90+ for another while, your prediction of $75-80 seems reasonable to me. I spoke to a couple of industry guys yesterday and they said that with the recent cut backs, even if oil goes up to $80 in the next few months, it will be mid-2016 until we see things pick up again, so we can all expect it to be pretty quiet as far as new projects go, so the guys working in fab shops and on the exploration side will be hurting.

Then I come across this article which states that Canada’s oil sands industry is pumping record volumes of crude despite sinking profits and warnings of an extended stretch of weak prices. Some of the sector’s largest players – including Suncor Energy Inc., Imperial Oil Ltd. and Cenovus Energy Inc. – are dumping more oil into one of the shakiest energy markets in years, defying the 50-per-cent plunge in prices that has prompted thousands of layoffs and hammered earnings across the board.

This confirms what Darius mentioned above and is why I"m not sweating this too hard as I work maintenance shut downs and if the mines, upgraders and refineries are still going full steam ahead, then I will be working as these facilities must be maintained by law (ABSA). Also, this is why I've been telling all of you guys since day one to get into a skilled trade that is involved in maintenance instead of exploration such as drilling, fracking, etc.

This isn't an oilfield thing either. You can work all over the place and increase your salary by getting more and more tickets and experience. Look into welding inspection and see if you can get an entry level QC job in a shop, where ever you are now.

With a few API tickets (and some other misc. stuff), plus 5-10 years of experience in Canada and an engineering degree, you'll be able to work in the Middle East as well (better climate and you won't pay income tax over there).
