Single mothers more likely to have ADHD boys: study
http://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/health/...7308583570

The evidence keeps mounting against slutdom and feminist independent woman ways of life. Whether it's a factor in the stress of shitting out a kid fucking up said kid's brain, or because single mothers are generally shit, it seems on a West Australian study that it's invariably mothers outside relationships who are triggering or causing their kids to have ADHD:

Quote:BABIES born to young single mums are more likely to develop Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, according to groundbreaking Australian research.

And children with ADHD are 70 per cent more likely to have been hospitalised as an infant, suggesting inflammation and infection may affect their brain development.

The findings are part of one of the largest ever studies into what causes ADHD, due to be presented at a conference on Saturday.

So is it a small study? Nope:

Quote:The research involved over 16,883 West Australians aged between four and 25 who had been prescribed ADHD medication. These children have to be included on a register in that state.

Researchers then cross checked the hospital discharge and midwife data associated with children on the register.

Professor Desiree Silva, Professor of Paediatrics at the University of Western Australia will tell a Developmental Origins of Health and Disease Conference in Melbourne on Saturday ADHD is a genetic disorder.

[quote]However, she says her research suggests “genetic effects may be conditional on exposure to certain environmental triggers”.

ADHD which involves a pattern of inattentive, impulsive and hyperactive behaviour is the most common neurodevelopmental disorder in children with a global prevalence of 5.2 per cent.

In Western Australia 1.2 per cent of children are being treated with a stimulant medication to manage the disease.

“We know that healthy brain development in early childhood is crucial so if we can determine any conditions that may disrupt this process and lead to lifelong effects then we may get a much clearer picture of how to prevent or treat them,” Professor Silva said.

The study found there were 5,363 hospital discharges for children under four years of age among the 11, 902 children who were subsequently diagnosed or treated for ADHD.

The interesting part being: are the high level of hospital attendances for ADHD the kid's "fault" for having the condition, or are they shit mothers? Consider this:

Quote:Compared to children without ADHD those with the condition had double the risk of being hospitalised for ear disease, neurological disease and poisoning.

They were 68 per cent more likely to be admitted to hospital for head and neck injuries and had a 43 per cent greater risk of being admitted to hospital for burns.

Hospital admissions for asthma, bronchiolitis and upper respiratory tract infections were also linked to higher risk of being diagnosed with the disorder.

Such children were twice as likely to be admitted to hospital with tonsillitis.

Hospitalisation with gastrointestinal infections came with a 60 per cent increased risk of ADHD.

Children hospitalised for sleep disorders and epilepsy also had an increased risk.

And children of young, single mothers were also more to suffer from the condition, according to the research.

The researchers say some of these risk factors may be causes of ADHD and others may be markers of the disease.

The direct neural effect from accidental ingestion of poisons or the inflammatory response from burns “may alter neural development”, the study says.

“The association of middle ear disease and ADHD has been suggested where intermittent mild to moderate hearing loss may disrupt auditory pathways resulting in auditory processing difficulty and inattention,” the study says.

Either way, these are body blows to the idea that you can statistically raise a kid just as safely with one single mother parent as a couple. The risk is higher that the kid will develop ADHD -- whether because being a single mother fucking everything that moves affects the kid at a genetic level, whether the lifestyle triggers off the condition, or whether the mother is a shit mother who's more likely to leave crap around leading to accidental poisonings, head injuries, neck injuries, etc, etc.

I like the hunter farmer explanation of ADHD.
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hunter_vs...hypothesis

It would stand to reason that as hyperactive kids age they will eventually start to adapt to the confines of modern society. Hyperactive people tend to hyper focus on certain goals (like getting laid, making money, a la RvF). These guys become desirable and women flock to them.

A new generation of kids lacking impulse control is born. However with stern father figures these habits can be guided so that they'll flourish. Without, well we get kids on cocaine like medicines.

RE: Single mothers more likely to have ADHD boys: study
I have a form of ADHD that if you look at the symptoms, may appear severe.

(1) I could not study in school, aside from 2 classes in university where I liked the textbook. I literally could not force myself to read a boring book or arrange notes, my brain would just turn off and I'd find myself staring off into space. I could never get past the first page of any textbook.

(2) I have no ability to self-motivate while pursuing private business projects and I never get anywhere, no matter how good my "ideas" are.

However, I had a father who taught me how to work and make money and I've still found a way to make money that goes well with my limits and abilities.

I wouldn't be where I am if I'd been raised by a single mother.

My mother is amazing, but she couldn't have done what my father did by herself.

My father, on the other hand, might have pulled it off, if he'd been on is own.

"I can count on one hand, literally, the number of women I have ever met that can take that kind of advice, accept it and make use of it without their epic egos setting metaphorical fire to the conversation.

Most women "looking for advice" are in reality looking for someone to validate their cosmic victimhood, because it's not really their fault, because it's never their fault. This behavioural trait isn't absent among men, but when we fail society cares not, while when women fail there is no shortage of comforting platitudes on offer from every vector.

RE: Single mothers more likely to have ADHD boys: study
The older I get, the more I think most of life comes down to genetics and these women are willfully passing on the genetics of men with a plethora of issues, among them the proclivity for ADHD.

How do we know?

We know at least partially because when lesbian and/or infertile couples seek out a sperm donor, they want to know about the donor's academic and credentials and behavioral characteristics. They look for men who were academic standouts and had solid behavioral characteristics.

No one asks for vials of sperm from men who couldn't complete schools or hold down jobs, because these are likely sings the man was troubled as a boy with something like ADHD. Yet this is exactly what single mothers do in real life. Then, for some reason, these women think they're going to raise the next Bill Gates or Mark Zuckerberg.

Why is it that women understand the importance of breeding dogs, but don't get that the same applies to humans?

That said, I think environment also plays a big role, but the media is so rah-rah about single moms, even mentioning this is "judgmental." The same group of Ivy Leaguers get into college with daddy's money and thank him at graduation then go into media and tell everyone else how unimportant fathers are.

(Addendum: Not everyone believes in the ADHD diagnosis, which is a fairly recent phenomenon, possibly helped along by Big Pharma, which benefits from sales of Ritalin and other drugs. So the entire idea here can be questioned, but that's best done by Psychology Today or people with big budgets and lots of time. Still, even if there was no diagnosis per se, like in the 1960s, my point about passing along bad genetic stands.)

Firstly, I'm skeptical about this whole ADHD thing. I think it's over-diagnosed. What a lot of those kids need is a good foot up the backside. No surprises then that single mothers raise these little devil spawn when there are no strong males in the kids' lives. Furthermore, I bet a lot of these kids subsist on a diet of sugar and X-Box all day, again due to their mothers' terrible parenting. Again, no surprises when the kids are out of control then.

Endogeneity, endogeneity, endogeneity.

It's almost as if single mothers and their babies' daddies pass on genetically their low impulse control to their offspring...

Your story is great and it makes a lot of sense too. My criminology classes all show a link between a lack of fatherhood growing up and ending up depressed, involved in criminal activity, or somehow emotionally disadvantaged. Some of these situations are extreme cases, but they still could have had a much greater chance of being avoided if the kid had a dad or even a good uncle or grandpa growing up. You were able to make the most out of a bad situation, and a lot of that is thanks to your dad.

Leftists and feminists want to ignore this trend and exercise their freedom and equality, but the facts are the facts.

No doubt it's over-diagnosed - probably particularly in the US - but neurological studies back up that it is a real condition, and not (when diagnosed correctly) just a matter of unruly kids who needs a bit more discipline. Although I'm sure it is just the latter in a significant number of cases.

It can also manifest itself in slightly different ways. I wasn't diagnosed (by a neurologist) with ADHD myself until I was 30 (I also have another co-morbid neurological disorder that I had known about since I was in my early teens, but the ADHD diagnosis caught me by surprise), but it most definitely put an explanation to some of the eduction and job issues I had had since my mid teens.
I never had any of the obvious hyperactivity symptoms (physical symptoms at least), and I've never had problems concentrating for hours when I'm doing something I find interesting. My persistent problem has been overcoming the tremendous mental hurdle it is for me to do things I don't find enjoyable - regardless of whether it's a job, a specific topic in school (I actually got very good grades over all, but needed a few breaks and detours and unfinished higher eduction paths along the way) or supposedly enjoyable and relaxing entertainment activities.
And yes, I know ADHD naysayers will say that most or all people have problems like that at various times, and while they'd be right, the difference in frequency and magnitude can be significant.

Very sudden loss of interest in something I previously enjoyed, and the near impossibility of regaining lost interest, has also been extremely common for me.
And again, it needn't be serious and responsible activities like a job, it could be eg. having had a blast with a particular video game for a few days, looking forward to playing it again the next day, and when that next day arrived, feeling no inclination whatsoever to ever play it again - and getting excruciatingly bored in minutes when I gave it a try regardless. Fortunately I don't typically lose interest in an activity in the broader sense - I've always loved reading for instance, love lifting weights, and even still occasionally enjoy certain video games.

Because of this my brief couple of months attempting medicating with Ritalin were pointless. I could already and still can concentrate just fine on things I enjoy, and the medication has no effect on more long term focus and interest problems.

Relatively recent research shows that ADHD might be tied to the brain's reward system and the related neurotransmitters. Essentially people with ADHD have a harder time than most people delaying gratification, and if the payoffs are not in very near sight the resistance to do the task can be very tough to overcome.

The brain is very slow to mature. The immaturity in boys needs to be deterred and opposed by men. Women are just overgrown children in most cases. That is why they never truly intimidate strong boys. Remove the man and you remove the spur toward emotional development.
Funny how my boys never could stop talking about everything male teachers said and did. Female teachers were all forgettable.

ADHD? Is that the word they use for the high rates of crime committed by young black men born to single mothers in black communities or is it some form of ingrained trait seeded by their environment?

Yeah....

ADHD is utter bullshit. It is a renamed condition called 'child with no reality check'. The same way they renamed shell shock to PTSD so all of those doctors can pat themselves on the back and seem like they're smart for figuring an obvious flaw in a population.

A mother is attached to a child the way a father isn't. Not to say a man does not love a child more or less but he can and should take a stance and without remorse. The animal kingdom has males keeping the youngsters in line. If they step out of it they get beaten back.

Mothers indulge their children, especially boys. When boys have no father figure to latch onto they go into meltdown mode and strive to find something to belong. Bad behaviour is normally the result be it throwing temper tantrums or joining gangs as a teenager.

Meanwhile the drugs companies say something is wrong with your child and [this drug] will magically soothe him like a babe in arms.

A mother will take the easy life all the time.

I think you should consider asking for a refund on your medical degree, it sounds like you might have gotten some disorders mixed up.

Not that I disagree that using ADHD as a blanket excuse for the example you give there is rather stupid - assuming that's actually happening. It's just quite a leap to indiscriminately associating a concentration and focus disorder (that can also be diagnosed in children or adults with perfectly healthy family structures and sensible upbringing) with crime, and then labeling the entire neurological disorder "utter bullshit".
A common misdiagnoses sure, but that doesn't invalidate genuine cases. It's also not a condition that necessarily makes it impossible to live a fairly normal and productive life.

To people claiming ADHD is not a real neurological condition, I would be tempted to tell them to "just walk it off" if they happen to break a leg. Both are roughly equally stupid and fairly unproductive suggestions.
Now whether putting hundreds of thousands or millions of kids on stimulants as medication (disregarding all the cases of misdiagnoses) is the best treatment is a slightly more complex debate however.

Maybe you should re-read my post but I'll make it obvious for you.

Not every child has ADHD. There is such a thing as badly behaved and in the context of single mothers it can be exasperated because no father figure is present. Plenty of points in my post pointed towards this.

And I'll take your insult about some sort of medical degree with a pinch of salt. The medical field has a lot of flaws within itself regarding simple things such as diets, let alone psychological disorders.

The drugs work regardless if the child has a genuine disorder or not. It simply shuts them down physically. Everybody is happy. Doctors got it right, pharma got their cash and new addicts and the mothers have a quiet life.

No, you argue that EVERYONE who claims an ADHD or condition in partaking in

Nope. You simply paint everyone who claims an ADHD condition with a very large brush.

According to your posts (especially the original post on the topic), I am expressing

No exceptions.

RE: Single mothers more likely to have ADHD boys: study
Suits, maybe a more interesting (and fruitful) way to frame the question would be this:

There is no doubt that some people, such as yourself, show a pattern of behaviors and personality traits that can be described as "ADHD", for lack of a better term.

The question is: is there any good reason to make this pattern into a diagnosis that is entered into the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual and medicalized? Is this medicalization helpful to anyone other than the drug companies who have managed to put many millions of kids on what are essentially speed analogs?

You've been able to live an interesting, enjoyable and productive life (far more so than that of most men, I'd say) by figuring out how to play to your strengths and work around your weaknesses -- with the benefit of your father's guidance. But there are many other men with different personality types who also have to to do the same; some men are painfully shy or introverted; some seem to have a hard time controlling their aggression; some find it hard to motivate themselves to do anything at all. All of these different types, and many others beside, have to navigate life somehow and find a way to play to their strengths, if any, just as you did. And there is no doubt that having a good strong father around would help most of them.

Certainly, with sufficient "research" one could identify some neurological patterns that correlate more or less with these personality types -- how could one not? But the question remains, to what end? Is there any real need to find a medical-sounding label that characterizes what seems best understood as a particular personality type, which still allows people to live perfectly good and rewarding lives if they make the right adjustments along the way? Is it really necessary or useful to think of the behaviors that characterize this personality type as "symptoms"? What, if anything, is being gained by that?

same old shit, sixes and sevens Shaft...

It's a complicated issue, but in response, I'll say that I don't consider ADHD to be a "condition" in my case. I consider it to be part of who I am, for better or for worse.

ADHD and ADD probably describe several different disorders and situations that have a lot of overlap in some cases and very little in others.

While some folks with ADHD have above average intelligence, others struggle to function in society on even the most basic of levels.

However, for me, I simple have what I have. A handy medical label something is use to deal with other people, not to help me understand myself.

As far as I'm concerned, my brain knows what's what and is concerned enough with my well-being and health to instantly reject things that have to obvious correlation to my survival.

The only downside to this is that it prevents me from being an ideal worker bee and cog in the system. There are worse things than that.

The only question then is what to do instead, since society is set up around having lots of worker bees who delude themselves into believing that making someone else rich is in their own best interests.

Exactly -- and there is no doubt that thinking like this is a big part of what allowed you to live a good and productive life. And I suspect that most people "diagnosed" with ADHD (maybe not all, but a substantial majority) would also be better off thinking of it in just that way -- as a particular personality type to be lived with and adjusted to, rather than a "condition" to be "treated", let alone treated by the kind of harsh psychoactive drugs that have been fed to so many kids unfortunate enough to rate this diagnosis.

I disagree with defining it as a personality type.

I'd call it a brain type.

I'd put it in the same category as being too short for the NBA or being deaf.

I'd call the disease the renders you deaf a condition, but once it's done it's work, you are now a person who cannot hear. This is who you are.

Since ADHD is either the result of genetics or brain trauma, the damage is done by the time you realize what you dealing with.

The healthy way to go forward if you have ADHD, are deaf or are too short for the NBA, is to accept your limitations and look to discover what you can do well.

But to define it as a personality type is a mistake. It is definitely a disability and should be respected as such.

However, I'd rather be smart with ADHD than dumb without it.

The people who really get screwed are those with low IQ and ADHD. I really feel for them because they don't have many options.

Do you know if single mothers CAUSE ADHD or if they just diagnose their boys more?

There's a big diff

The majority of ADHD cases are shown by studies to be genetic. Although similar to some other neurological disorders or other diseases, it may have been latent in the parents.
I haven't noticed ADHD symptoms in either of my own parents, but in my mother I can most definitely see symptoms - milder than my own - of the other neurological disorder I have (also one that like ADHD actually most frequently manifest visible symptoms in boys rather than girls), even though she's never been diagnosed.

It's likely this is the case.

Odds are that boys with single mothers have more behavioural issues that is more likely to prompt an investigation.

Boys who have ADHD and fathers, are less likely to diagnosed, because they are less likely to have the behavioural issues that would prompt the sort of testing that would unearth a "learning disability."

ADHD is really over diagnozed. If a kid has difficulty at school, we will think about ADHD right away, while it probably isn't the case.
