Had a bit of a shit attack last night as my chances of getting a work permit look bleak. At 36 looks like LMO is my only option, I rang one or two companies that I sent my resumé to and all they say is that it is with their HR dept. But then I gave myself a kick up the hole and I will keep going till I get my visa.
There is an expo in Dublin in a few weeks and I will work hard there, see what I contacts I can make. I think the Federal Skills is opening in May so that is another option. Also my wife would probably qualify for a visa, but for the foreseeable future cannot move to Canada due to an ill family member, would I be able to travel as a spouse on my own??? Can anyone answer that? I also have the option of going out on a holiday visa and going to as many company offices as I can and prostitute myself to their HR people.
Salmonfella, what are you travelling on? And by the way at least the Canadians know what a cow is, how do you explain the BOG and turning and footing and refooting!!! haha. A great place to sort men from the boys.... head down arse up and get it done.

haha i am going on the IEC visa it opened last Tuesday and within 4 days the 6,350 places has been filled:o its basically an open work permit that will give me 2 years in canada. its for people aged between 18-35. haha heres some pics of the bogs lads

Good luck with the work permits guys. I spoke to my friend last night, he's a maintenance pipe fitter up at Suncor and they're gearing up for a shut down up at their base plant in Fort Mac in two weeks, he figures that he'll work 24/4, 14 hours/day until the end of June, should gross about 100K on that shutdown , not bad work if you can get it.

That is a union site which means all of the unions out of Edmonton will be flat out, so if any of you guys are in Etown now and looking for work, I would get my ass down to anyone of those halls and get an application in ASAP: pipe fitters, IUOE, boilermakers, carpenters, electrical, etc.

Powerlineman.

These guys are the other side of electricity. An electrician deals with low to medium voltage power. Basically distribution.

Powerlineman deal with transmission. The ultra high volatage powerlines.

250-750 KV. That's serious shit.

Lineman are like the cowboys of the trade. It's very dangerous, they get paid extremely well, after danger pay is added it can add up to $100/hr and here, you get to fly in helicopters. But you are on call, work outside always and it is very dangerous.

Good find, that's a lot of fitters to be hiring, 85 for one site alone! I've worked for that company in the past, JV Driver, but never at their Nisku mod yard. They are a pretty big construction company that is active in the oil sands.

I was talking with my neighbour, 55 years old, driver and mechanic for life. He drove from Croatia to Russia hundreds of times (that's like i don't know 3000 miles), worked on all kinds of cranes, heavy machinery, drove all existing trucks. So, we had a little chat and i told him about this, and how dump truckers are making like 50$ per hour, and he went bonkers. But i guess he has no chance cause of his age and the fact he's not very good at english, despite the enormous expirience, right?

He picks up his English, reading and writing enough to communicate. He has a great opportunity. As long as he's healthy, can pass a physical, he will be welcome. I've met many folks who think "Oh, I'm over 50." and think they are out of work....NO! Trades need skilled and experienced people to work.

Well yeah, but even for a dump truck driver i assume you'd need to know alot of english mechanical terminology or something, wouldn't that be a problem?

I'm not sure what kind of visa could he get, any way he gets the LMO with all of his expirience and abilities?

The Canadian government has already relaxed on the immigration laws to give foreign Chinese workers a better chance to come into the skilled labour market because there is that much demand for workers. I read earlier in the thread that there are workers in their late 50's and 60's that are up in Alberta, so I doubt your neighbour, especially with his wealth of experience, will have much issue getting a visa from an employer.

Well yeah, but how he gets in touch with his potential employee? Apply online with evidence of his working expirience?

Once my intention is to try edmonton/fort mac as a labour then try to find some company that needs excavators operators(experience 7 years but in Portugal),is that a job that the companies need the full year??I dont care if i need to work any time of the year becouse i want to fix on a good company and stay for the time they need!!!My intention is to get trust from the company and grab the opportunity to stabilize!!!

My Grandfather was Irish and I'm starting to wish he'd stayed in Ireland so I could use the same route as Irishman (although I'd be much too old).

As it is, it looks like a trip to Alberta would be just an expensive holiday with a job offer and then no chance of getting the LMO.

Can your sister SPONSOR you for some sort of permanent residence? Canada also has a Visa Type Lottery. Last guy I met was from Nigeria, and he won a permanent residence through the site below. His background education was Architecture.

I think I'm taking the plunge tomorrow. I live in Calgary and have been a sales rep for the past year in the construction industry after graduating from university.

When I wake up in the morning I feel like a parasite trying to get appointments and do presentations. I feel like building shit and am tired of talking to guys on sites who are making way more than I am.

I have a fair amount of experience in piping but want to go electrical. Will report back.
