I've run into this test from girls that I approach that are from overseas.
I got it from a Chinese girl yesterday.

We're a few minutes into the conversation and I ask where is she from. She says guess. I'm not sure how to respond to this.

For some reason, this has happened several times with Brazilians when in DC or Toronto. I'm tempted to say that if I'm pretty sure they are from South America to say that they are from Uruguay, kind of like saying if someone who is most likely from western europe is from Luxemborg or San Marino - they can't claim to be offended and it comes across as ridiculous.

The reason I'm thinking this is the one time an eastern european girl did this to me I said "Latvia". Turned out I was right. She asked me how I knew and I blew it from there. I should have then said I was a professional mind reader and teased her mercilessly from there ("Hey, stop having dirty thoughts about me! I barely know you!").

So for:
West Europe - Luxemborg
East Europe - Slovenia or Latvia - somewhere small that no one could get upset about
East Asia - Singapore
South America - Uruguay
Central America - ???
Rest of Asia - Nepal
Middle East - ???

Anyway, if anyone has got a good response for this test with a good success rate, I'd love to hear it. Especially if you think my thinking is wrong on this.

If she looks Japanese, guess Nigeria.
Etc.

Just say: "Just a guess, but You are not from around here. You are from ____ aren't you." This is even something you can use as a first line opener. It's better to make statements even if they turn out to be wrong than to ask it as a question. So in your case, I would say: "You look like you are from Luxemborg (or whatever)" before she even asks the question, if that's where the conversation is going.

Yeah, preempt it by guessing instead of asking where's she's from. This is actually one of the most consistently successful openers I've used (thanks Roosh). It also works great as a springboard into a fun conversation about heritage and ethnicity later in the interaction.

Also, note how effective the "guess" response was at disarming you. Keep that in mind for when a girl asks you a question that you're not sure how to answer, but know that you probably shouldn't answer straight.

It is a mistake to participate in her little "guessing game."
Recognize it for what it is-a power play in which she is attempting to put you in the inferior position-having to answer her question- a question to which she already knows the answer but you do not.
In essence, it is a type of shit test-she is trying to see if she can make you jump through her hoops and make yourself look foolish in the process.
The way to pass the test is to refuse to play the game.
Respond to her ridiculous demand that you "guess"
Some potential responses from you:"No" or "I don't care, I only care that you or here now" or "It's not important"
The point is to be dominant and let her know she can't manipulate you. If you can come up with a response that is witty as well even better.
As the other poster noted, preempting the question by asking if she is from a certain place is also very good. I live in a resort town with a lot of tourists and I use this all the time very early in the conversation, sometimes even as an opener.

Feel out the vibe and drop one of the following:

Option 1: If she seems to take herself more seriously:

"You're from... Earth. Right? I knew it. I don't believe in drawing arbitrary lines between people."

Option 2: If she seems playful:

"Okay, I'll play your little game. But you guess first. Where do you think I'm from?"

Here is one I get a lot in the Colorado where many of the natives are suspicious of people moving to their state.

Me: Hi.
Her: Are you a native of Colorado?
Me: No.
Her: It was nice meeting you.


I never know how to circumvent these.

Game is about avoiding her traps and laying your own.

To the OP, don't ask where she's from. Just make an absurd guess as a way of starting the conversation. It's a great opener as others have said and it accomplishes both objectives.

To the poster just above, if you know that a definitive answer will turn her away from you, be evasive. Say "it's complicated".

Responding to what is likely a playful game on her part with a rigid "no" or something similar doesn't make a lot of sense. Just because a girl doesn't answer directly, that doesn't mean it's a test.

Respond with an 'uncool' suburb of the city.

So if Sydney, guess 'Mt Druitt'... if it's London, guess 'Romford', etc.

Take away any exotic factor, that's she run of the mill, and even tedious company. let her qualify herself to you after that.

Remember, she's testing you to guage your interest in her. Don't slave to it, and give off them vibe your estimations of it are unappealing.

The answer to this question has always been easy for me.

"Everywhere."

It's true, I grew up moving around a lot. Answering this way let's me move into any number of different interesting stories about myself... Regardless of your past, this answer always works wonders. It's vague enough to pull something out of your ass if you don't have much to go on or are feeling creative.

Use your imagination man, look at her physical features and build your answer accordingly. As you do it speak to her how you are building your answer and come up with a final conclusion, its fun and it will show your observational/analytical side, even if you dont guess right.

They are not sure if thats good or bad.

Which is good!

Sometimes I just approach them and say ..."Are you Portugese?.

I've always had good luck with "Portugal" and "Portugese".
