RE: Cars You Guys Are Into
What it costs to own an exotic, according to a commenter on CNBC:

Quote: Another1r • 3 days ago

I remembered reading this on the old Wealth Report that Robert used to manage at the WSJ.

I have said it before and will say it again. Cars are not an
investment — they cost a lot of money to own and maintain and they lose
their value. We have a six figure sports car — I speak from experience.
The happiest day in the life of a Ferrari owner is when they buy their
car — second happiest day is when they sell their car. Rent one for a
day, week, month, etc. The headaches that come with leasing/renting
(taking aspirin) are minor compared to the migraines of owning one
(taking prescription Motrin).

Here is the math experiment along with assumptions — your mileage may
vary. Imagine a car costs $150K and you are one of the rare breed who
actually “daily drive” your toy. Assume you drive it 30K miles (6K/year
which is low) over 5 years of ownership and sell it for $100K (this is
not unrealistic)

Let us assume that it needs new tires every 10K miles (cost of $2K
per set – again not out of line from my experience. You are not taking
it to a track, where you can burn through a set in an afternoon.) You
will need 3 sets of tires. This is just $6K.

You will need to have it serviced – realistically at least every 5K
miles, so 6 service visits. I will be generous here and assume only
$2.5K per visit – total of $15K

There will be at least one $10K emergency repair that has to be made,
or baby is UN-drivable and a garage queen. There will probably be 2,
so set aside $20K

Your baby needs premium fuel – assuming $3.50/gallon for easy math.
We will also assume 10 miles/gallon which is probably too low, because
you like to open up baby several times per tank of fuel. So, you
purchase 3000 gallons of gasoline at a cost of $10.5K.

Insurance – let’s assume you are over 45, married, college educated,
have children, and all of those other things which get you a lower
insurance rate, so you only pay $3K per year – total $15K.

Police – we are not even going to go here. Some police are car
fanatics like you, and will stop you to ask questions and “give you a
safety inspection”. They really want to see baby close up and will
probably not give you a ticket if you let them. In California you used
to be able to donate to the 11-99 Foundation for police and their
families killed or permanently injured in the line of duty. You used to
get a license plate frame that would “occasionally” get you out of
tickets. Lifetime membership starts at $2.5K and goes up to $25K. This
item is NOT added in the cost — it is a good charity giving $.82 per $1
donated. That is kick ass performance for a charity.

Pictures – I am not talking about the pictures you take of baby, but
of the pictures other drivers will take of her. Nothing like almost
wreaking your car on an early morning winter commutes in the dark when
someone takes a flash picture in your face and you are blind for the
next 10 seconds (you learn to pray). Of course, when you are parked at
restaurants and other places you will need to let parents take a picture
of their baby sitting inside your baby – do not want a PO’d soccer mom
keying baby the next time she sees it because you were an ass. Be sure
to NOT leave the key in the ignition when the child is behind the wheel.

Your children – you finally have a car that your son/daughter will
take out and fill up with gas for you. You still get to pay for the gas.
They will undoubtedly have a MasterCard moment or 2 when meeting their
high school girl/boy friend. This can be hazardous to your insurance.

Garage space – this is whatever you can negotiate with your spouse
and what the local building codes allow for garages and unattached
buildings. Best hope is that your spouse also loves sports cars.

Baby needs to be clean because baby will be photographed a half dozen
or so times a week. I would estimate about $10K — you don’t wash it
every week and will occasionally get it detailed.

The total owner experience here using the delta of buying/selling
plus the expenses is only $126.5K. This breaks down to the bargain of
only $25.3K per year — $4.22/mile. This is for a “cheap” exotic. Your
mileage may vary.

Know your enemy and know yourself, find naught in fear for 100 battles. Know yourself but not your enemy, find level of loss and victory. Know thy enemy but not yourself, wallow in defeat every time.

This article is complete nonsense. First off a Lambo or Ferrari is rarely a daily beater, it is a second or third car. Maintenance on some of these cars is not that bad at all (depends on make/model and egear vs 6speed). Lastly I know a Lambo owner who pays only 2k a year for his full coverage insurance.

I hope they finally go through with an Infiniti variant. Infiniti needs some bona-fide sports cars. This and the Q-50 Eau Rouge would do the trick.

Went to the Nethercutt museum in Sylmar, CA. Largest collection of classic cars I have ever seen. A few of my favorites.

1. 1937 TALBOT-LAGO – TYPE 150-C-SS/SPORT COUPE

2.1931 Bugatti – Type 51, Coupe
