Getting good at Wordpress, FAST
Due to constant lies, inefficiency, and general disgust with my Filipino virtual assistant, I've decided to fire his ass and become a Wordpress pro as fast as humanly possible.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I'm considering using Lynda:

YMG, most of the stuffs you possibly need to do are in the discussion forums on WP. Example- blog in 2 languages, or making it members only, and so on.
Is there anything specific you need to work about?

RE: Getting good at Wordpress, FAST
I suppose my issue is not that there is a lack of content out there.

I'm looking for a way to expedite the entire process of going from "zero to hero" to the point where I'd be considered a world class developer in a period of 1 month.

The issue again, not a lack of content. I need streamlined content that will rapidly propel me to the point where I can be an elite developer.

What are you wanting to be able to do? Write custom themes? Write custom plugins? Just use existing themes / plugins and learn the back end?

RE: Getting good at Wordpress, FAST
That's what the world needs... another wordpress coder...

Sorry but you can't be an elite developer in a few months. Things like that take years. Now if you only want to be able to code a plugin or create a theme that's definitely possible, but far from elite...

Why do you need wordpress skills? Do you do websites for clients? Do you plan to become a freelancer?

(Sorry but I often have to deal with code from those so called developers when working with clients and it's often faster to rewrite the whole thing... People should either learn how to code properly, and yes, that takes time, or let it be...)

YMG you could become very good by watching youtube videos.
I'd suggest learning those wordpress skills as you come upon tasks that you have to do. There's a lot of shit you can do with wordpress so just learn the stuff you need to do for your business. There's a ton of videos out there so you'll have information on your fingertips. There's no point becoming a master if you're not gonna use all of it and it would be a waste time for you.

YMG I understand your frustration and deal with the same issues all the time working with overseas VA's. Care to share what solution you came up with?

RE: Getting good at Wordpress, FAST
I'm getting into web development and design. I have been interested in this for years and am jumping in with both feet now (as a side gig...I have extra time at work, plus spare time).

I had played with the idea of becoming a CMS-free developer (thinking one-page responsive and parallax scrolling sites). However, after more thought, I decided I will learn a more valuable skillset, faster, more dynamically, by developing using wordpress. Besides the fact that it's simple enough to develop (use template and tweak) a bare-bones one page site in the future if I wanted to.

I love parallax scrolling effects, and I think they sell really well ("here are some projects I've done...").

Now to wordpress. I now have a domain name and hosting through GoDaddy, installed wordpress, purchased the Intense wordpress plugin (for many things including parallax scrolling). I'm finding this plugin tough to use with free wordpress themes (even a one-page responsive theme), probably because I'm a beginner.

Question: Is it worth it to pay $100 for theme+plugin with a very helpful video using this exact theme/plugin? I'm thinking yes, go ahead and buy it, cheap education.

The plugin looks like it'd be very easy to use and build many different types of sites with (for a portfolio), plus I've already learned a ton by watching this video (how to use Inspect Element and edit templates).

Oh yeah...WNB without booze

Edit: Or, if there are any guys out there who know the industry, do I go with Themify?

I am in the same boat. I want to learn Wordpress and basic web development over the next few months.
For now I just started on the GoDaddy website builder which is super basic and as easy as it gets.
Next site Ill go with Wordpress.

RE: Getting good at Wordpress, FAST
I put up a small wordpress site with minimal prior knowledge of web development. I did most of it waiting for the guy on Fivver to respond to my offer to hire him to do it. Glad I did it myself now. I don't know why you would want to become the best in the world when you can get away with only knowing 20%.

I just did it the simplest way possible, bought hosting in my country, manually installed wordpress, paid for a nice theme, tweaked it to fit my needs, installed a couple of apps and the first week I've taken about $350 of orders through the site.

Now I know how to do it I'm offering to make websites for everyone I know. My current boss wants 2 for his businesses. Will probably charge him $700-1000 because that's what I can get away with.

Exactly.

The process isn't difficult and if you run into an issue, you have a wealth of resources at your finger-tips.. i learnt almost everything related to web design, hosting, configuring servers etc through the internet. I'll be dammed if i can remember it now.. this was many years ago when i was teaching myself different things, but it's easy to pick up relatively quickly.

I guess you could call it that.

At the moment I'm focusing more on getting the business off the ground and approaching the customers who I know can use my service. But in the future I want the website to bring in business on its own in a way that makes it real quick and easy for both the customer and I.

I don't sell media or digital content and I don't plan on selling products in an online store as there is no money in that for the game I'm in.

I would recommend Treehouse for absolute beginners. The videos are short and they teach from how to use wordpress to making your own plugins and themes.

^^ Not sure they have many parallax scrolling themes or how easy it is, which is what I'm looking for.

That's how I found the other two resources, by looking for parallax scrolling themes/plugins and more responsive builders.
...StudioPress‎ (themes/plugins used in the video above)
...Themify

Anyone know a good landing page template/plugin? I'm trying to use "Simple Solid Lite" with the "Inbound Now" plugin and I don't like it at all.

Resurrecting this thread.

I'm looking to set up an online store through Wordpress.

If any of you guys have done so, I would be grateful for a recommendation on the resources you used in learning how to do it.

Free resources are preferred of course, but paid courses are welcome too.

I have heard of Google, but I trust the opinion and experience of this forum's members first and foremost. Wink
