I seem to not have much trouble having an engaging conversation, I feel I can chat about any subject quite freely. While I like to have this, at the same time I find myself getting distracted by the topic of conversation and loose track of what I want, the punani.

on the other hand, if I go in with the mind set of wanting the punani, I wouldn't be able to engage in a conversation at the same level ...

It really is ultimately what I want, everything else is a distraction: what kind of mindset do I need to combat this?

You want to make her laugh, get her talking, get her to ask you questions, have fun with her. If these things are happening, she will want to see you again. If these things are not happening, its gonna be tough. You are getting too caught up in the conversation.

Exactly, your job is not to win an argument or to convince them of your philosophy about life. Who cares what they believe in or think about a particular subject anyway. Focus on having a good time with them. For deep, meaningful conversations talk to men.
