Do you want to run a business or do you want to get laid or both? Do you like Asian chicks?

If you have investment income to live off of, that is a different story.

I work and live in China. I would not finally settle here because of the lack of protections for foreigners who buy real estate.

I married a Filipina and she (we) are building a house. Once that house is done I will look at further options and the specific laws that govern foreign real estate ownership. We are talking about a POS goat village that I want to make into a destination as a retreat for tech geniuses who want to get some shit done.

Malaysia is well developed, safe and has a relatively low cost of living. Also, most people would probably prefer its tropical climate over the one of London or New York.

But, as with everything in life, there’s a catch. This visa will NOT allow you to seek paid employment in Malaysia, so you must be able to make your income abroad (investments, digital nomad etc.).

That being said, if you can make your income abroad, Malaysia will not tax you on it as it has a territorial tax system (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_taxation).

I think this makes it a very attractive option.

I have also began considering Malaysia as an alternative to Thailand. Better infrastructure, superior English levels, probably a better education system, easier language, less insular, everything is not as concentrated in the capital, less densely populated (Thai roads can be quite congested), etc.

Cons being mostly Muslim but relatively liberal in its policies. Perhaps not suitable for party types but could be ok for those looking for a more quiet life.
