Happy new year Guys,

I came across a online advertisement for a laptop at very reasonable price. The online laptop price at the scam website was 30% less than market price.

Against my better judgement; I bought the laptop online from that scam website. As I feared; my money was gone from my credit card and I never received the laptop. It's been more than 2 months.

The scam website where I bought the laptop no longer exists.

Getting money back is easy. I contacted my bank and disputed the transaction. I am hopeful that I will get money back soon.

Now I been thinking on this matter for a while now and have done online research but can't find proper answers. The questions I am trying to find answers are:

1) If scammer got the money and close the online shop; how the bank will recover money? Will bank pay me back from their pockets?

2) In this age and day; is it not very easy to catch these scammers. Scammers need to make website, buy domian, buy hosting, get a bank account and get a payment gateway for website. Opening bank account where scammer will receive money and opening account with Payment gateway provider needs proper identification. So how scammer think he can get away with this scam?

3) To buy domain and hosting for scam website; say scammer used stolen credit card. But once original owner of credit card will report these transactions and bank will cancel these transactions; hosting and domain provider companies will not cancel the domain and hosting?

4) Even if scammer is operating from EE or some African country; scammer still need a payment gateway and a bank account to receive money. How he thinks he can get away with this?

Note to myself: only buy online from reputable shops.

Someone stole my credit card number a while back and bought some expensive shit online. My bank called me to report the suspicious activity, then cancelled my card right away. It took about a week to get refunded the money. But this is a different scenario since it wasn't me that made the transactions.

Back in 2017, some random guy in Oregon somehow got my Social Security Number. I have no idea how.

I had to file a case with the U.S. government identity theft department and it has been resolved (I think).

Unfortunately, It is extremely easy to get away with these scams unless a serious cyber unit gets involved!

1) Your money in a Bank is always insured by the FDIC (or international equivalent) for up to a certain amount. So unless they get to the bottom of it, they simply repay you & close the case. The Head of Cyber Security for Banks are Flashy High Rollers. They won't waste their time on a small pray believe me!

2,3,4) Scammers of this magnitude are tight-knit Gangs who do it all In House. They Can code websites in a Day or 2, so when payment processors are shut down after a complain... On to the Next One under a New Corporation to move around between financial institutions on the Low. At this level, they have their own servers to Host their own Website so no worries about being evicted.

I'm just starting to be an adequate coder... and can already see the field that could be exploited. Be very wary when meeting a tech guy which seems extremely cold & inhumane! Could be doing this type of shit!

OPs writing indicates that his first language isn't English.

Considering he's gotten the money back, and his details haven't been used fradulently otherwise, his 4 questions seem to be asking how to get away being a cyber criminal.
