Sorry for the big pics. I don't know how to cut them down at this point. This brings back a lot of very good memories for me. Custom vans just lined up every night at the seawall in Connecticut. Black playas, Italian, Portugese and Latinos all with their own style partying with women all over the place. No cell phones bitch shields or cops breaking our balls. I feel bad that you younger cats never got to experience

As a general gimmick I don't see the draw today but at a festival (think Lolapalozza, Ozzfest and such) I can imagine how it would pull like mad.

If it makes any sense I grew up when we modified everything. The guy with the sweetest hotrod or van usually had the most choice tail. It was an I guess what DHV would be considered now.

My friends are just the two at the top, the Mazda MPV and the RA1 Odyssey. Neither of these are raced, both are on air suspension and were built as carry vehicles for motorcycles/scooters.

I've talked to one of the guys from "Youga Base" a few times (the group that runs the Ram Vans), but I wouldn't really say I know him, definitely not a friend, I'm just vaguely aware of what they're doing because I read their blog.

As for the racing of the ElGrands and the Ram Vans...not sure. Maybe just because they can? They're dumping TONS of money into these things, especially the Rams. Viper V10's, 6MT's, $10k into suspension, etc, just to do track-days with each other. Most of those Watanabe wheels are magnesium (AND bespoke sizing) at like $4-5k/set, super light, etc. I guess it'd be fun to take a vehicle not meant to go fast and then make it go fast, but it seems like swimming upstream to me.

As for the pimped-out VIP-style vans like the last white one I posted (Fledermaus/Regina Vellfire), some of those are definitely shag-vans. Some are also set up with DJ equipment inside and huge speaker arrays, etc. If you can dream it up, someone in Japan has probably installed it into a modern fullsize JDM van. It's probably the MOST popular tuning subculture in the country, sports car tuning is waning in popularity in comparison with the late 90's, but vans are still crazy popular.

Those vans are crazy. WTF. Didn't know such a culture existed. I'm seriously considering a Sprinter now, but they are pretty expensive and getting parts for them are difficult.

With a Sprinter it's easy to bring girls back and have her enter your "home" but a van is a totally different beast. It requires decent game and a certain persona to pull it off without looking shady.

There is no comparison in having a Sprinter home (slick custom interior) vs a static home. It solves most logistic issues. With the right strategy, you can bring 95% (yea I made that up but you get the point) of girls you're with to your car. How sweet is that to be able to bring most girls back to your place with something as simple as "hey lets go to my car for a bit, I gotta pickup something" once she's there it's game on!

Those tricked out limo-Sprinter vans cost anywhere from $80-$100k brand new. I want to buy a Sprinter Cargo and minimally trick it out for $55k.

Also, They are insulated and do not heat up in the summer. I went into a black on black one at 3pm in the afternoon at a dealership in the Valley. It was 95 degrees outside. The van was comfortable. Not the heat rush you would expect.

Parking it in LA is impossible as it is 8ft tall without the raised roof

In a couple of years, I'll get one to use on my CA roadtrips.

The last time I cried was literally 2010 when I sold my GMC Explorer conversion van. That was the most fun car I've ever owned.

My last notch was hoping I had a pimped out minivan. We passed one while walking when she expressed her enthusiasm. Got me thinking that it would be hot to have one. It'd have to be spacious, plus have just the right ambiance and music (imagine an amusing scented air freshener for good measure). Still banged her in the back of my ride. Mid-size SUVs do the trick.
