Post-mortem Criticism
Hey Fellas,

What are your thoughts on post-mortem criticism?

I always found it weird that people so avidly defend the criticism of anyone who has died. Even if the person has done awful things in their lifetime, or was just an overall shitty person, once they die they become immune to any criticism for the things they have done throughout their lifetime. Now this isn't always the case of course, certain individuals are hated and criticize throughout the world after death, but cases like that are rare. I don't mean to bash a dead guy for the sake of bashing them, but to criticize for legitimate wrongs that they have committed should be okay. To me, the best way to truly punish individual for their crimes is to acknowledge them for the horrible person that they were and not to talk about them, that way they can be forgotten to time.

RE: Post-mortem Criticism
I never cared for it. Some guy I used to know who used to beat up his mom for drug money died a few years back. When my mom asked me if I wanted to go pay my respects, I looked at her and laughed.

Some people are better off dead.

I will be checking my PMs weekly, so you can catch me there. I will not be posting.

It's a form of virtue signaling. Or attention whoring. An extension of the narcissism inherent within the personalities of more and more people in this day and age.

But the human tendency to favor remembering the positive over the negative is somewhat hard wired into us. It'd be much harder for most people to continue on through life and function day to day without this instinct.

RE: Post-mortem Criticism
An old colleague once defined respect as 'what people say about you when you're not in the room'.
He gave examples of the varying levels of respect (or lack thereof) we had for other colleagues.

As far as when McCain was alive - what were the majority of people saying about him?
If you compare how people on the right feel about McCain with how they feel about Trump, there is no comparison.

Post-Mortem criticism is just a review of what has already been said

two scoops
two genders
two terms

RE: Post-mortem Criticism
Post-mortem criticism should not differ to still-alive-criticism.

Though in some cases - who really cares?

Even when I see a crazy warmonger like McCain - my condolences go out to his family who may miss him and who loved him, who saw a different side to him. Most people have that kind of experiences - even Hitler was kind to his co-workers, his dogs, his partners, supposedly to many people who met him. Does not mean that I won't be criticizing his life's errors.

Though some people are even worse than Hitler - really insane motherfuckers who kill and torture even their loved ones. In that case I say: "Well - I hope he will learn and do it better next time, because obviously in this life he was a lot of work."

As for loved ones - this story is good:

A woman dreamed that she met a wise man who asked her about her dad. The wise man asked her to take two pieces of paper and write down all the negative aspects, habits and things he does. Then on the other paper write all the positive ones. After she was done jotting it all down the wise man took the sheet with the negatives and said: "These will all pass and wither away in time." Then he pointed to the positive list and said: "These character points will stay and become stronger and more numerous." You can love the person for the positives despite all the negatives knowing that ultimately only the positives will win.

RE: Post-mortem Criticism
I recently bumped into one of my old flames, who is now an eternally-single, grossly-hardened fortysomething prescription pill addict. I don't know what else she's into, but she kept mentioning "truckers."

As fate would have it, her dad just died. I just saw the online obituary.

So I was thinking of writing a message of condolence that said: "His daughter's a whore. Now he's dead on the floor."

What does everyone think of this? Would that go over well?

In art and literary criticism there is some overlap between "post mortem" crit and postmodern crit, i.e. deconstructing anything that was accomplished by dead white males, i.e. revising history toward a Marxist end. I guess it's easier to attack geniuses who aren't around to defend themselves?

In our world it is super-easy to attack genius shitlords who are still alive. Just say that there are two genders and it does not matter whether you have created world peace or invented limitless free energy for everyone - you are a hate-filled despicable transphobic racist and your name will be thus treated accordingly.

Good point. I guess I'm thinking back to my uni days (20ish years ago), before social media and Buzzfeed, etc. gave us instant mob justice. The profs and other intellectuals I knew would bash dead white males based on postmodern criticism out of the 1960s.

Maybe the answer it simpler. Most cultures have had a taboo around speaking ill of the dead, presumably because it's unfair to attack anyone who can't defend him/her/xirself.
