Why are Kiev ladies such snobs? There’s a group of Kiev women in my class that my mutual friend invited to his house party. They attended but when they got there, they barely socialized with anyone. I tried to initiate some friendly conversation with them, and made some small talk just so they’d feel more comfortable, but they only responded with one worded answers. It was hella obvious they didn’t want to talk to any of us. Are they always like this? Is this a cultural thing or is it because of the language barrier? My friends are now referring to them as the outcasts, because they don’t mingle with any of us. What’s wrong with them?

Maybe because youre the type of guys who refer to other groups as outcasts. Unless you’re in junior high in which case carry on

This is hella unworthy of its own thread..... you could have easily put it in the numerous Kiev threads or in the Newbie thread

Likely due to the coincidence that you, and presumably your group of friends, are the the types of guys that run out and join an internet forum to start a thread asking other men "why do the mean girls not talk to us?"

Perhaps you should be more compelling in your approach.

The term 'hella' started in the San Francisco Bay Area in the mid 1980's. I didn't like it then either, but didn't know what I could do to stop its spread. I'm only one man. Apologies all around. Kona might know what to do.

After saying this, contextualize by telling them how all Ukrainian politicians and government officials are a bunch of useless corrupt leeches, with amazing cars and houses while the old babushki survive with 40 USD per month...tell them also how much you love to eat borch and vareniki, and listening to Svetlana Loboda songs...

From here on you can't fail to impress.

Yea, most Ukrainians from Kiev I've met so have a strong distaste for small talk. Some of them will even say stuff like "No, let's not talk about this boring topic" and then they'll take some time to think of a better topic and the conversation with continue smoothly.

Also, OP, take into account that not everyone necessarily feels comfortable speaking English. Some are well aware of their limitations and prefer not to speak the language. If you can make them feel comfortable speaking or show that you're comfortable making mistakes speaking Russian, that can smoothen the process
