I understand the concern about rising rents and a general disdain for Amazon. Still, I view jobs as good thing.

From what I understood the 25,000 Amazon jobs paid an average of $150k or so. Even if these jobs were not going to be filled by AOC’s constituency, a large Amazon presence would have spill over benefits in the area. For example, local hotels, restaurants, and merchants would see increased business traffic off the back of having Amazon in the area. This could translate into more jobs albeit not necessarily at Amazon.

Not only that, Long Island City is really growing. Sort of similar to how much of Brooklyn was basically an unused area 20 years ago and after bringing in real estate developers and adding hundreds of apartment buildings, stores and supermarkets, and a larger population, there is a push to do that in Long Island City in queens, starting with apartment buildings. Essentially Brooklyn has become more like Manhattan, Long Island City will see the same thing happen. Having amazon and all of their thousands of high paying jobs would have been quite a boon. I’m sure things will continue on without amazon but running them off the way they did is idiotic.

I think it's a mistake to view Long Island City as a single entity like this. Amazon's coming would've had different benefits and drawbacks for different residents.
Property owners, obviously, would benefit enormously, as did any commercial business that owned its own building. Renters would've suffered heavily, as they were now forced to compete with people making 4 times their salary. That's both commercial renters and apartment renters, by the way. One of the things that happen when rental cost skyrockets is that small individual tenants are forced out and replaced with large chains who can better afford the rent. The stereotypical example would be that neat little independent coffee shop on the corner being replaced with a Starbucks.

So if you were say, a family which rented an apartment and ran a local Mexican restaurant, Amazon's coming would mean the loss of your job and the loss of your home. Why would you care what benefits it had for the area's tax base? You won't be around to enjoy it.
