The refs have to be complete, total and uncompromising hardasses when it comes to handballs because any hint of lenience or weakness will see that shit slowly creeping in over time and ruining the game. If you think Neymar-style faking/cheating/diving/etc is bad now, the bullshit associated with "accidental" handballs would make it look tame by comparison if the refs did not consistently exact the harshest possible penalties with the quickness.

Just saw an interesting stat that Giroud is the first, and probably the last, center forward to win the World Cup without registering a single shot on target in the entire tournament, and he played pretty much every minute of it.

Last one to score zero goal was Guivar'ch , in France 98.

Exactly, so that didn't happen because of Giroud. If France played Lacazette, Fekir or Benzema, they would have won it easier. At least, they could have took a shot on target 1 time throughout the tournament

Nah, Giroud provided great structure allowing Mbappe and Griezmann to play off him. A big number 9 adds quite a bit even when he isn't scoring - would take a Benzema over him, a Fekir would materially alter the team structure, however.

Actually now that VAR has been introduced, diving/acting/faking has to be an automatic yellow card. That would teach them real quick.
It's not acceptable that the whole world is seeing a player faking it, in slow motion, over and over again and again and again, right after it happened, but nothing happens to punish them for it.
Player is diving -> VAR notifies referee -> next time the game is interrupted for whatever reason, referee shows player the yellow card for diving.
It could be so easy!

Giroud has a high work rate, he's disciplined and he always helps out when the team is defending. He holds the ball up, he distributes it, he's winning headers and, very important, he occupies the centre-backs. And that means lots and lots of space for Griezmann and Mbappe.

So in the end, it paid off for Deschamps and they won the thing with his tactic and choice of players. Who can argue with that?

^^^^ What still boggles my mind as it pertains to Neymar is that the fact that they allowed Neymar to be on the ground whining a considerable amount of time in the games. He lasted a total of 15 minutes on the ground in this world cup. WTF are the refs doing? Are you really going to stand by and watch this dude roll over and cry for 15 minutes and not give a yellow card?

Giroud draws defenders, his physical presence makes it hard for one defender to cover him. This opens up things for the smaller quicker forwards Mbappe and Griezmann. The combination of one big center forward and a speedy winger is a classic one.
