Hard Boiled is a Chinese movie. "A tough-as-nails cop teams up with an undercover agent to shut down a sinister mobster and his crew". Not an original idea but it's good, non stop shootout scene after shootout scene. This is what to expect if you check it out.

Hands down the red pill film of the year. If you only go to the cinema once this year, make it this one. Hope it gets the foreign language Oscar. It's about an ageing writer / playboy trying to regain his creative spark after decades of partying.

Little Big Soldier. A Jackie Chan movie during the War of the Seven Kingdoms. Action, comedy, and drama. One of the best Chan movies EVER! Full movie above btw.

Le Joli Mai - French documentary from early 60s. The narrator is basically interviewing different types of Parisians on a wide range of subjects. I figured it would be interesting but had to walk out of the theater after an hour (its 3 hours). Maybe im not intellectual enough, but this artsy b&w film was to damn boring.

Fish Tank - British drama. Im starting to really like British flicks. Theyre usually pretty raw and I think the ugly ass Brits make them seem more real. This one is about a bad ass, 15 yr old girl trying to find herself in some Essex projects. Her mom brings home a new, good looking boyfriend one day and an uneasy relationship begins with daughter and step dad. I dont think anyone here wont like it.

The key thing is, you need to get Netflix. It just opens up a whole world of foreign movies. It's a great thing because you can learn a lot about a country before you even go there, just by watching the movies. Some of my choices:

The Beat That My Heart Skipped (France)
The Robber (Germany)
Fish Tank (UK)
Sleepless Night (France) (This is a bad-ass, adrenaline fueled crime drama. See it!)
A Call Girl (Slovenia) (Great real-world view of how a modern chick can become a hooker. Roosh would like this move.)
The Trap (Serbian)
Bullhead (Belgian). Depressing but good
Head-On (German/Turkish) Good drama. Lead actress used to do porno...interesting story.


Check 'em out...you won't regret it...

Bullhead was an awesome movie.

Foreign movies seem to focus more on story telling and evoking emotions, where as Hollywood just dumps out stuff made to make money.

Saw "Shadow Dancer" tonight (2012). Without doubt, one of the best dramas about the IRA I've seen. British film, stars Clive Owen in his usual intense role.

Oldboy - South Korean movie. A man is kidnapped and locked in a room for 15 years with no explanation. He is released and tries to find out why his kidnapper did this. Lots of violence and gory scenes. The ending is pretty fucked up. Cool movie but I wouldnt watch it again. Recommended.

I saw the Devil (Korean) - hands down the most violent, entertaining, and fucked up revenge flick I've seen in years. The actor from Oldboy is in this one, too.

The Secret in their Eyes (Argentina) - Excellent detective movie. Acting is incredible as well as realistic.

I'm blown away by how much better foreign actors seem to be when compared to Hollywood actors. Not to mention they're probably getting paid much less.

Frozen Land - from Finland. This one is cool. Its a bunch of different stories that has the characters all connected by one event.

Filth, a recent Scottish movie based on an Irvine Welsh's (from Trainspotting fame) is brutal. No happy endings there.

The Guard, an Irish movie about a cop who ... well he pretends to be dumb, blows all his money on having threesomes with hookers. But maybe he's not so dumb after all? Great movie.

Good one @dirtypurist The Guard is fucking hilarious, especially if you're Irish and from the countryside, as there's a good few in-jokes and references to country life in Ireland, which mightn't be obvious to foreign ears
Even without getting all those little jokes, there's still plenty to enjoy, Gleeson is superb, one of the most entertaining performances I've seen in a movie in recent years, I was nearly crying with the laughter, he slightly exaggerates the West of Ireland accent, but instead of sounding hackneyed, it makes his lines sound even funnier, great stuff
Another good Irish movie from a few years back is Garage, a bit bleak at times, but brilliantly played by Pat Shortt(a comedian most of the time)

Alemão is a new film in the same vein of these two movies. It's about 5 undercover cops who's cover is blown in the days leading up to the police occupation of Complexo do Alemão (favela in Zona Norte of Rio).

Overall a suspenseful and entertaining movie, but a level below either City of God or Tropa de Elite. If those are the Boyz in the Hood and Menace II Society of the genre Alemão is Juice or New Jack City.

One caveat to my review is I got lost in the dialogue a few times as the Carioca Favela slang / accent was hard for me to follow. So, it's possible the movie was a shade better or worse than I gave it credit for.

My guess is it gets an international release sometime before the Copa.

I don't know if it has been mentioned but I really like pan's labyrinth its pretty well known as its number 118 in the IMDB top 250. Its in Spanish with English subtitles, its basically about a young girls adventure in a fantasy land set against the backdrop of the Spanish army base fighting against Marxist partizans in 1940s spain. Can't recommend it enough.

"Trainspotting" and "Filth" are two of the greatest movies I've ever seen. They brought out real emotion from me and left some kind of lingering 'sunkenness' inside me for the rest of the day.

Different maker,s but as mentioned it's the same author for both the original sourcework - Irvine Welsh. Dark stuff. It's not the same genre as the following, but I'd say if you liked "A Clockwork Orange" and "Donnie Darko", you'll love these, and vice versa. Again, not the same genre, but good, dark, and hypnotic material that truly opens the mind. Maybe "American Psycho" is in the same breath.

Oh, also, saw "Oldboy". Very good film. I don't think it's too dark necessarily...but maybe that was because I was busy reading the subtitles...and I really enjoy dark stuff. I have to say I saw the 'big reveal' about the hero the first shot in the Sushi restaurant.

Romper Stomper - Australian skinhead movie. I haven't seen this movie in about 10 years but I don't remember it being to good. Has a younger Russell Crowe.

I rented a French movie in middle school (on vhs!) and am going crazy trying to remember the name. I only remember a part where some young guys throw beer bottles at some skinheads and are talking shit to them from a rooftop. Any ideas?
