So I've decided I'm gonna take up surfing as a hobby since its always been something I've wanted to do and will give me a new angle for my game. Anyone have any suggestions for where I should get a good surfboard from, preferably under $1100?

My last board was a Stewart Hydro hull. 9' 0". Great riding shape. Depends on what you're looking to do. And I'll leave that advice up to the vets like Kona.

You might be able to get three used surfboards for that budget.

I don't surf that much anymore but my friend who is really good and surfs all the time says Al Merrick surfboards are the best.

buy a used longboard. see how you like it. sell it if you dont. will cost you very little in depreciation. no use in buying a new one.

bought my 9' longboard used from a local shop for 375. Long boards can be hard to find, but I wouldn't spend much more if you're just starting out.

Please do not buy an $1100 surfboard if you are just starting out.

Take the G's advice and look on Craigslist. You could also cruise around the area you plan to surf at and look for a house like mine with boards laying all over the place. Knock on the door and ask if you can buy one.

As far as what type to buy, tell me a little about your size and age. Also tell me where you are learning and we can go from there.

No brands though. You have no idea how to control a board in or OUT of the water. Most likely, the bulk of the damage you will do to the board in your kook stage will be putting it on top of the car, or the cat knocking it over at night.
