I think that you might find the answer to your own question by researching which countries in SA, A and EE do the most trade with Austria. For example, very few firms are properly qualified to help non-Chinese companies with their efforts to enter the Chinese market. There are very few people who are knowledgeable about both Chinese business law and US business law. I'm guessing that you could count on one hand the number of Austrian law firms that have a team that could adequately help an Austrian company setup deals in China (or Vietnam/Malaysia/etc).

I'd look into that.

If you're in a position where you could spend two years become fluent enough in Mandarin to read and interpret Chinese law codes, I'm sure you'd be more than qualified to exploit a competitive business contract law niche.

RE: I have a Law Degree from Austria - can I do anything with it in SA/EE/SEA?
Well first, your attitude has to change, i.e. (that little weird country in europe)

Austria (a powerful google searched revealed)

"Export is regarded as vital to Austrian economy. Main export commodities are machinery and equipment, motor vehicles and parts, paper and paperboard, metal goods, chemicals, iron and steel; textiles, foodstuff."

Therefore, as suits recommended, see who are the bigger players in those industries. Who do they export to? Where to? what law firms do they use ? (mostly all countries have some types of Customs), and the big players rely on law firms to get the job done.

Requires due diligence on your end. Be a lawyer, investigate the facts and don't take "no" for an answer.

Good luck

I'd watch out making fun of Suits. You'll get a strongly worded letter in the mailbox from Mr. Flappy, ESQ.

Austria has one of the best skiers who ever skied (Marcel Hirscher) currently winning everything on the World Cup, just like he's done for the last 5 or ore years.

I suppose what I'm saying is that if he can come from a weird little country and rise to be the best ever in the world at skiing then the least you can do is a little research on how to do business in China.

Better still, stay in your own country and save it from ruin.

Join an international German speaking company like Deustche Bank? I'm sure a big bank like them would have an in-house legal department and since you speak German and a law major, I assume you would at least be of interest to them? I'm sure once in, you can find a way to work overseas for them.

Not sure if this helps but hope it does.

RE: I have a Law Degree from Austria - can I do anything with it in SA/EE/SEA?
Apparently there are a lot small lawyer tasks needed for everyday business and if you find the right niche you can help people remotely.

Here's an interview with a person who did just that:
http://www.tropicalmba.com/sarahk/

Download the mp3 or listen to the podcast and get some ideas.

It was a while since I listened to the episode and I'm not going to listen to it again, but the idea is to focus on a specific type of contract/legal advice, and provide a relatively cheap service for that niche. Ideally something that is used commonly in business; for example, rental contracts or business to business type stuff, where lawyers can get expensive and you can come in and provide a relatively cheaper service that is still compliant with local laws. Stuff that needs a legal touch but doesn't really require your presence in a court room.

For example, if I remember correctly, the lawyer in the podcast specialises in making those T&C letters for online businesses (you know, those things that no one reads but you have to tick a box that you read them before doing something on a site). Crucial stuff to protect your business but also relatively run-off-the-mill, so why pay for a local lawyer when you can just get a cheaper online lawyer?

So 4 years later, we'll be seeing a "I have a Law Degree AND an Engineering degree from Austria- can I do anything with it in SA/EE/SEA?" thread on the forum?

Jokes aside, avoiding the problem by going back to school is only going to lengthen your confusion.

4 years later, you would be older, less desirable in the job market and the confusion then will only cause you even more misery.

Are you absolutely sure you would need that engineering degree? If so, carry on then..

There's no joke in what you wrote. It is a perfectly accurate prediction of the future. Whether OP starts that thread or not, his confusion is guaranteed to be only increased by getting yet another degree in a completely different field.

If OP lacks the creativity to envision a job that would allow for travel outside of Austria with the education he has, getting a second degree in engineering will make his options so niche that he'll be incapable of finding them for himself.

OP is a classic case of someone who is hard working enough to get through school with good or decent grades, because the optimal path is clearly laid out for him, but lacks any initiative when it comes to creating a path for himself in life that is even slightly off the beaten track.

Worse yet, he's engaging in a very common trend these days -- putting off life by just simply staying in school as long as possible. I've never seen that work out for anyone very well.

I'm not in the lawyer world, but I don't see the problem, really, and I agree with Suits.

You're a German-and-English-speaking lawyer trained in the EU. A lot of the major trade hubs like Hong Kong are huge magnets for talent and have probably filled this niche (still, take a look), but surely people like you are needed in places like Buenos Aires and Chengdu.

I have to imagine this is a hell of a lot stronger of a position than being a Spanish-and-English-speaking lawyer trained in Argentina who wants to work in Austria. Don't beat yourself up.

The apathy is truly frightening, brother. "meh".

Why are you going to engineering school? what resources, skills do you wish to get from this? Seems like you'll be spinning your wheels, unless you truly reflect on what/why you want this.

In these scenarios im kinda glad education costs a crap ton of money in the US. Spot on by suits: Education does not necessarily equal productivity.

You gotta fight for what's yours. Nothing will come banging at your door.

Troll maybe?

I can only comment on EE, but can say that it will have no value on the ground here. You wouldn't believe how low the local salaries are here for junior lawers, it's ridiculous. $1500 a month is a big salary.

The way to play it is to join a global law firm or consultancy, put in your time, have a target destination, learn some language and have your sites set on an expat position with them.

If you pull that off you'll have a great package, and be able to live like a rockstar here.

I went to a party hosted by a junior expat lawyer in Moscow. That circle are all professional expats and they are living the high life.

I'm a lawyer in the USA who focuses on immigration law and the thought of setting up shop abroad is very much on my radar. Maybe start slinging EB5 visas independently or try to find a company that needs in house counsel. Im thinking I will also consult with a global staffing company to see what's out there. Any thoughts on routes to take would be appreciated.
