The weird thing is that this is not compulsory. They can continue to have station attendants pump gas for them if they choose, but the very thought that regular civilians have the freedom to do so drives them nuts. Further proof that the Left is all about control.

I love that someone is complaining about "feeling unsafe" getting out of the car with "transients around".

Every idiot I've ever known who lives in the Pacific Northwest bitches about the plague of junkies passed out in their yard, smashing their car windows to steal their gym shoes, but won't move somewhere sane that enforces reasonable vagrancy laws because they so prize the attitudes that welcome this, even while suffering through the massive seasonal depression brought on by the same chronically bland weather that makes it physically possible for Boxcar Willie to come shit in your garden shed year-round.

In Croatia, you can occasionally see some above average looking woman requesting staff to pump gas for her (or staff coming by itself without her requesting it), but in majority you are doing it yourself. For those who mess their hands, there are even disposable one time nylon gloves to put on before using pump.

Interactions with people...this is just a throw-back example of how we're interacting less and less.

It's funny, because pay at the pump and getting rid of gas attendants as something I now realize is us being more and more lonely.

I've had a few conversations with friends about grocery delivery becoming more and more ubiquitous in the near future, and I feel old for saying I rue the day.

Gas attendants, checkout employees, going to the store to get groceries, going and asking the guy at Best Buy "what's a good tv to buy" rather than looking at Amazon reviews...these are all ways we interact with one another and understand the diversity of the people around us.

Politically I'll always fall on the side of freedom, but let's not lose our social interactions.

I went to Oregon recently. With the exception of gas attendants, the employees at the Indian casino, and the Portland Trail Blazers, everyone in the whole state is white. The "transients" too.

But everywhere, in the paper, on signs, etc. people were talking about " diversity." Now they're gonna put the few minorities they have out of work.

In Eastern Europe, Everyone fills up their petrol and diesel. There are a few specialized LPG stations with operators, because it is slightly dangerous to trust smokers to do this and some gas can be wasted if done clumsily, but in many combined fuel stations, where you can buy all three types of fuel there is not attendant to fill LPG as well although you can call one if you have trouble.

I have always felt bad conversing with these people. The conversation is about ignoring the elephant in the room that these people are doing unqualified, dead end, minimum wage jobs. Their IQ is at least 30 points below me, they likely have no self-improvement values, are unhappy with their job, but most likely blame someone else for their life. Why should I talk to them? Is a minimum wage worker and a rich guy in an expensive car to pretend they are equals when the poor worker fills the expensive car he can not afford? These people are better off learning something new and doing jobs where they produce more value. They may not like it, they may feel inert and afraid and lazy to upgrade their qualification, you may be horrified about them evil technologies stealing jobs, but I am not convinced that the stagnating alternative where these people do useless monotonous dead end work and practically act as mascots of nostalgic antiquity is better.

In the past, I've dealt with females who have mistakenly filled their cars with diesel because gas pumps are just so confusing.

Maybe this is a ploy by the Deep Auto Repair State to cause that?

They're fine jobs for teenagers and old people. Or handicapped people.

I think it's a good thing that young, old, retarded, handicapped...all find a place in our society and economy. It's in-part why I hate government handouts.

There is nothing Oregonians hate more than being reminded that Oregon is too white.

I first moved here from Southern California, and at first I mostly talked with a Mexican couple who had moved here to run a taco cart, and we would marvel together at how white it was. I never thought I would be a white guy saying some place was too white.

I sure as hell couldn't say it to native Oregonians.

I got used to my people eventually, but it was weird not to have any Latinos or black people in the mix.

There was a yearly summer celebration downtown where they closed the streets, had a parade, and set up booths.

The NAACP booth was manned by an old pale white couple in expensive outerwear who looked dejected.

In the nineties a local Japanese poet from Hawaii wrote an article in the liberal weekly about how Oregon was too white and white Oregon was in an uproar, because the people here see themselves as some sort of magic post-racial-down-with-the-cause-artisanal-people, and being reminded that they are just a bunch of depressed pale types in a rainy overcast place does nothing to quell their seasonal affective disorder.

We spend all year convincing ourselves we are not white, and to have anyone remind us of the truth is just plain rude.

Oregon's true claim to fame is that it is not-California in the same way that Canada's claim to fame is that it is not-U.S.

No one is really sure what this elusive notness entails, since all of the driven creative people from all over the world move to California, and if they get too tired there, they move here.

Before Phil Knight of Nike turned to University of Oregon into his own personal fantasy football squad, and Oregon started winning at something, a big part of Oregon's identity was wrapped up in being sore losers at college sports.

So Oregonians could commiserate about how all the mediocre California teams who were much worse than Oregon got spots in the NCAA's. Wouldn't you know it, and just our luck, and fuck California.

That was ruined when the U of O started winning at something, and Oregonians turned from sore losers into graceless winners, quickly becoming the stadium of fans that all the other fans, the refs, and even their own janitorial crew consider the worst in the Pac-12.

Oregonians were meant to lose and be jealous of California. That is their role in life. When their teams win they get uncomfortable and don't know how to act.

Even to see that now there are beautiful cheerleaders makes me uneasy. This is not the Oregon that I know and love or at least know.

So anyway, about the pumping their own gas.

No one really cares about that.

Having so little distinction in any other thing, people in Oregon try to find individuality in weird little state quirks, like having no sales tax, or not pumping your own gas.

This is all we have in terms of distinction.

To take that away is like having Trump win the presidency or something. It is a direct attack on our very being.

If we don't have this distinction, we cease to exist.



Now all we have to call our own is the topless glitter boob girl.

I have a sneaking suspicion that this guy actually does...not...give...a...fuck.

Regarding the gas pumping thing, it really highlights how humans get caught in the paradigms of their local culture and customs. Easy for us to scoff and laugh and talk about how soft these people have become; on the other hand, you see weird little mental hangups like this in varying areas of life no matter where you go, usually defined by what was "normal" to that particular place as the locals grew up.

This is one of the most powerful things about world travel, especially the type of travel that gets off the tourist track and actually puts you out in new cultures, up close and personal, forcing you to question everything you think you know. It breaks you out of those behavioral ruts and opens your mind to the possibility that you may be quite deluded about a few things. I mean, I'd hope most of us here aren't so soft we'd lose our shit over having to pump our own gas, but regardless, it's a reminder to look hard at what you think you know and blur the lines a little bit to consider what might be unnecessary or self-defeating.

I've seen even the most solid, masculine men I know - some men I respect in many other endeavors - act like little bitches over funny little creature comforts, not realizing that they even were because they were just blindly stuck in the behavioral patterns they'd grown up with. Stepping beyond cultural conditioning takes a certain type of thinking. Manliness, as we generally think of it, doesn't always have much to do with who clings hardest.

It usually has more to do with being proactive about perspective.

The posts above are pretty damn bad and hard to empathize with at all, but I still think there is a lesson in incidents like this for us all.
