Yeah, this movie will suck for sure.

How much time does Hollywood have left? Over the last ~10 years, there are at the absolute most 3 movies a year worth watching, and usually that number is 0. Every time they try the "woman power" angle, the movie bombs. Combined with the sexual harassment debacle, I don't see how Hollywood can continue to be profitable. Is it purely just (((funded subversion))) at this point? It doesn't seem like money is the goal anymore.

Mainly because the end involved them driving off a cliff.

Although metaphorically, I'm sure Ocean's 8 (much like Ghostbusters before it) will suffer the same fate at the box office.

Women make terrible criminals, they'll tell everything to the birds and bees and blabbering trees with the tiniest arm twist.

Most realistic scenario, most of the girls go bragging about their ingenious robbery plan and the whole crew gets wrapped up in conspiracy charges well before the plan is put into motion.

At least female superheroes have super powers to beat up men. There will never, for the rest of human history be 8 female criminal masterminds in one room.

Not enough people want to see this to make this successful with so many highly-paid egos on board. Few groups of men will want to watch it, a few more groups of women will want to watch it, and some poor saps with controlling girlfriends will be forced to watch it. If they've gone big budget (a la Ghostbusters 2016), they're fucked.

Mostly female movies can be both good and successful... IF the women act pretty much like women, with idealized characters made to display a sensible view of life. That's what Snow White did; it turned out as one of the greatest movies ever made.

Sandra Bullock is still bangable for an old broad. I never liked the blonde one sitting next to her on the bench (thumbnail). This movie looks EXACTLY like Ocean's 11. It will barely break even.

Who exactly is the target audience for this?

I decided to play a bit with Facebook Audience Insights, which is basically the greatest free marketing tool on the face of the planet because it allows you to datamine Facebook's own data to see if there's a market for your product. Google it, it's free and it's pretty damn easy to use. I was put onto this after Corey Martell's article on Slumpbusters and how he established there basically was zero market for the product they were putting out. I won't post my results here, go and play with it yourself, but...

The first issue is the genre. It's a heist film. Which means right off the bat you're trying to market to a male audience. When you ask Facebook who has an interest in heist movies, it comes back heavily slanted: 67% male, 33% female. The slant is very similar if you go looking for those specifically interested in Ocean's 11: 60% men, 40% women. And they have to be trying to bring in current fans of the George Clooney franchise since they've deliberately made the lead character Danny Ocean's sister. If they didn't care about that audience they'd just do a straight reboot, they wouldn't try to link it into the current system.

Again the problem being that if you then throw in the question "Of that crowd that likes heist films and/or likes Ocean's 11 specifically, who is also interested in Sandra Bullock?" you get 81% of the women interested, but only 19% of the men. On top of that, the overwhelming majority of people in these groups are married: generally if you're married, then if your partner doesn't want to go, you generally don't go either. Where are most of these fans? Mostly in California or New York. Virtually nothing in the flyover states. This movie is designed to appeal to the coastal elite women, of whom there simply aren't enough to turn a profit on something like this.

In other words this movie with a massive cast budget (given all the stars and all the cameos) is being targeted at a tiny slice of the market: women who are interested in heist movies. Men aren't interested in rolling up to see a group of over-the-hill women pulling off a heist movie; not enough to recoup that budget. Whoever is making this film needs their head read.

It wouldn't surprise me if Ghostbusters got over 200 million at the box office, worldwide. The problem is that it cost the better part of 600 million to make.

Structure does not equal substance. A mimicry of a successful franchise doesn’t mean a damn thing if you gut the mojo from 11/12/13 and make it PC.

Couldn't agree more. Another big problem with this movie and why redonion's statement is true is that it's yet another non-original idea. I'm sure many of us think to ourselves "it seems like everything these days is a sequel, remake, reboot, adaptation, etc." so I decided to look at what's playing in my local movie theater and see if I'm just being nostalgic for the good old days of original cinema. Here's what's playing:

Star Wars: The Last Jedi – Sequel
A Bad Moms Christmas – Sequel
Jumanji – Reboot/Sequel
Ferdinand – Adaptation
Wonder – Adaptation
The Disaster Artist - Adaptation
Justice League – Sequel/Franchise
Daddy’s Home 2 – Sequel
Thor: Ragnarok – Sequel/Franchise
Murder on the Orient Express – Remake
Lady Bird – Original
Wonder Wheel - Original
The Shape of Water – Original
Three Billboard Outside Ebbing, Missouri - Original
The Greatest Showman – Original (biopic)
Coco – Original (Pixar, i.e. formulaic)
The Star – Quasi-original

The Star is a retelling of the nativity story so if we take that out we have 10/16 non-original. So 2/3 of movies they produce are just recycled and repackaged ideas. Of those original ones, how many are actually intellectually interesting and not just lowest common denominator "empty calories" type "entertainment?" There are interesting movies out there, but they're not coming out of Hollywood. I'd look forward to Hollywood's demise, but the big blockbusters will continue to prop it up while the insignificant cookie cutter garbage comes and goes.

Sisyphus it's Oscar season so you probably caught a higher proportion of original movies than normal.

This is the time of year they put out movies with British accents, gays, disabled people, SJW crap (racial discrimination etc) to get sniveling, pretentious movie critics to vote for them to win Oscars.

It's crazy how bad Hollywood is now. Go to basically every new movie on IMDB and the ratings will be high, but every single "top rated user review" is always 1 out of 10 "trash, one of the worst films ever" type of reviews.

Good point. 1/3 seemed high to me, but even if it isn't that's still appallingly low.
