G - I don't remember the club name and I didn't say the club sucks, just that the quality were not as good as Toronto (from the small sample in that club) but I was only there for a couple hours so I can't judge Montreal nightlife yet.

I was referring specifically to not seeing many hotties in the day time. My buddy noticed the same thing, we both live in Toronto for 20 years. I am quite surprised by the hype for Montreal girls on this thread, I have to go back and really keep an eye out next time.

I've gone to pretty much all the big clubs in Toronto. I organized events and parties for the last few years so I know most of the promoters, I've worked with Kleenmedia. If you partied in Toronto often then you've attended their parties.

The club that I probably go to the most is Easy on the Fifth, something like in the hundred.

To be fair, Montreal is a bit of a 'learned' city and to really get the full experience you need to go during the summer.

The youth hostel a couple of blocks from the Canadien's hockey arena, at least back in the 1990s, actually was really nice and had very nice private rooms with a private bath for not that much. I don't know if that is still true. Worth checking.

I've been in the same situation when I used to live in Panama.

You'll need an apartment with high-speed internet.

Get a land phone with the requirements you need (i.e. speaker). Bring that with you from the States.

Several options:

1) Google Voice via Obi would be the cheapest route (free calls between US and Canada w/ Google voice). Obi devices are between $40-50. One-time fee. That's it. No landline bill whatsover.

2) magicJack - competes with Obi. They charge an annual fee (minimal price).

3) Vonage - Now my boy in Brazil swears by this, but he makes calls all over the world. Anytime I call him or vice versa, it's a crystal clear connection just like a landline.

Since you'll be in Canada, numero uno is your best choice. Free calls. All you gotta do is buy the Obi kit. Peep that vid in that link for a quick demonstration.

I guess you can work out the hard-line solution with the place/person you rent your apartment from. A calling card would be your cheapest route for outbound calls.

If you want to go the cell phone route, I say keep your US phone and get an international (Canada) plan with your cell phone provider. That way, you can use your US phone in Canada without changing your number. It will be like you never left which is good if you're looking to appear "inconspicuous" to your contacts.

FYI, for texting, Canadian numbers are treated like US ones because they both use the North American numbering system. So your US texting plan applies to texts made to US and Canadian numbers while you're in Canada with no additional charges.

No, I kept my US plan and got a Canada plan for less than $5/month. For outbound calls I made while in Canada, I was charged .20 a minute (reduced rate because of the plan). It didn't matter though because I only got the plan so that I could reach chicks in live time when texts were becoming too burdensome. 1-2 min convos. When I was at the apartment, I used Google voice through my laptop (free).

I never got charged for any texts to any US or Canada number. But that's the case even without the Canada plan.

hey guys, I know someone here sent me a great link on airbnb for a cool pad in Montreal, but I lost it. Can a MTL expert here tell me exactly WHERE I should get a pad? Ideally, close to the awesome nightlife. Keep in mind that restaurants are NOT a priority, but logistics from venues with DTF girls to my pad is of paramount importance. I am trying to avoid renting a car and walking/trains/buses/taxis.

Where should I stay as far as neighborhood goes. My budget is 2,000.00USD per mont, and I only require 1 bedroom 1 bathroom, but it must be a pimp, and trendy place.

St. Laurent - One of Canada's most famous streets. This is bar none the street with the most HEAVY traffic of hot girls. This would be your best bet.

Mont. Royal (Plateau) - Great transportation hub. Some cool bars here. Easy bus ride down St. Laurent street to get you to the main strip of St. Laurent.

Crescent Street - Premier street in the English part of Montreal. Lots of hot chicks. Much smaller street than St. Laurent though. Not a bad place to be because it's walking distance to downtown.

Old Port - Vieux Montreal. Old part of the city. Nice sophisticated venues. My favorite bar in the world is here (Santos).

You really can't lose between these four places.

No. If you switch out a sim card, you get a new number (local number) with that card. A prepaid sim card is definitely an option, but the rates for calls to the US aren't good.

My phone was a CDMA so it didn't use a sim card. I just kept my number and bought the Canada plan that my provider has.

Canada, despite having the same phone number system as the US, is considered international for US carrier purposes. When you take your phone to Canada, you will be roaming. There are additional charges associated with not being on your home network in addition to any charges associated with not having a calling plan for Canada. I'm not sure if what Hencredible said about text messaging to Canada is true, because the times I have texted my friend in Canada I have incurred international texting charges (I do not have any kind of Canada plan).

The solution is for you to buy a International Roaming plan for the time you are in Canada. Additionally, you should add a Canada calling plan so that Canadian numbers are treated as US numbers.

Call them up and ask to have it added. You may also want to add an international data package, which is separate from the voice services, otherwise you will rack up huge charges if you use data.

So I checked out the ATT one: $0.59/min. roaming in Canada

But it is still is kind of wack. I could easily rack up a 7k phone bill in a few months.
