There's already a Biggest Shithole thread. Yes, shitholes are an interesting topic. But I'd like to make a derived thread about the noisiest cities.

For me it was Valparaiso, Chile. People there have some alarms in their cars, some retarded beep-beep sounds that turn on when you touch the car, and sometimes randomly at night. Very annoying.

Noisiest for me is by far Manila. Their car horns are loud, annoying, and have no time frame. I remember staying in Mandaluyong and hearing car horns from several floors up at least 18 hours of the day. They blow their horns at a fucking feather in the road.

Quietest city I've been to is probably Taipei. I've been there twice and people seem to be respectful of one another and mind their own business. Also, at night it's like a pleasant ghost town, as you can hear a pen drop without the danger of less safe cities. Only place I've seen people practically collapse drunk regularly and still be quiet as hell.

Thanks for the report about Taipei, it is on my list. A quiet city I have visited is Chiang Mai. You can go out at night an enjoy a warm quiet breeze, hear the insects making some noise (and alas, the electric cables too). So far my favorite place in Asia for the quality of life.

Paris was the noisiest followed with Manhattan

Stockholm/Helsinki probably the quietest.

Again it really depends where you live in such cities.

Nosiest: Bangladesh - Mainly due to the colossal amount of stalled or crawling traffic honking their horns and rickshaws ringing their bells.

Quietest: Singapore - There aren't many cars compared to the size of the population. There is cheap, frequent public transportation and you can Uber across the entire island for about $25. The streets are very wide and it's generally spacious. As with anywhere with a lot of Chinese, most just work then go home and watch TV.

Agree that Manila was very noisy. I find Vancouver very quite in most areas.

For me it would be Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam.

I love the city but I think whoever invented the car forgot to explain the intention of the horn. These charming drivers horn at everything that moves. They also horn to signal intent. Like before moving off or changing lanes, they honk just that everyone in a 5m radius is aware, multiple that by the number of vehicles on the road and you have constant barrage of sounds but I guess it all adds to the charm of the city,

I think the winner for noisiest goes to NYC. I considered Kandahar briefly, but NYC wins because of the frequency of loud metal bangs and clangs from the constant construction and garbage trucks.

Quietest is Zermatt, Switzerland (assuming that this is restricted to cities that are relatively active). It's a fairly busy ski town, but very quiet because they don't allow cars other than electric hotel shuttles to drive within the town itself. Was a very pleasant experience.

All of the below can happen at 8PM-6AM

1. Super loud firecrackers for a litany of reasons.
2. A wedding.
3. A funeral with wailing Chinese music for 7 days straight until the burial.
4. Mortar fireworks for any reason.
5. Taxis or other dickheads holding down the horn trying to wake up someone in some building nearby. Sometimes they shout from outside this persons name until they wake up.
6. 5AM Roosters (although that doesn't bother me)
7. People fighting and cursing each other or beating children.
8. A loud concert in a shopping square nearby.
9. A man in a delivery tricycle on a megaphone trying to get you to come down and buy his flatbreads. Another guy wants your scrap metal.
10. Random horn honking. (The bulk of all noise)
11. Old women dancing nightly to dance karaoke on a video screen between buildings.

I sleep with ear plugs and an eye mask every night.

Oh yeah, the countryside is oftentimes much worse than any tier 1 city!

If NYC around Grand Central Station is a 4 on a noise annoyance factor for me, China is like a 10.

Fucking Chinese. The older generation is terribly gross, they make a great job at giving the well-known stereotypes for their entire nation all across the globe. Too bad, because the younger ones are pretty cool.

Glad to see Manila well mentioned in this thread that was one of the noisiest city for me as well.

Outside the downtown and skyscraper areas of the Philippines when you get down to the neighborhoods with homes those are noisy as hell too. Jeepneys, motorcycles, car horns, car alarm beeps, roosters, fucking dogs, videoke and music cranked up so 10 houses down can hear it, talking loud on phones, talking loud to each other, etc..

Of all the noisey noise in cities that prayer call thing is the creepiest. It could be the quest most beautiful city in the world, but that shit going off is just haunting.

Manila is the worst. I was in a nice hotel there once and the cops came and just left the siren running outside. Bad noise.
