The family confirmed that it was an overdose. It's almost always drugs with these guys. They gave the standard "accidental overdose" line because he was in extreme pain...yet didn't go to the hospital for treatment.

I have to wonder about musical people who have videos with lots of tight close-ups of their faces. There seem to be a lot of those in Tom Petty's videos. Is there some narcissism here?

Accident my ass. His tox screen showed 3 tranquilizers, 3 types of fentanyl, plus oxycodone. The man was a seasoned doper. He knew what he was taking.

I wouldn't be so quick to judge older people who take pain pills until you yourself are old and in pain.

When you start to age, cuts no longer heal quickly, sprains take forever to mend, and serious injuries sometimes stick around for years. Unless you totally stop all activity, you need some kind of pain meds to get around. And even if you do cut out all activity, sometimes you're in excruciating pain just lying there.

This, I think, is why medical marijuana and pain pill abuse are issues now, but they weren't in the 1980s or 1990s. The big segment of our population, the Baby Boomers, were young and healthy then.

But now we have people living longer than ever, which often means living in pain. Younger people have no idea of how badly a body can hurt when you get older. It's not something anyone wants to dwell on. But it's a fact of life.

Since most of us are probably going to live as long if not longer than the Boomers, it would be smart NOT to get caught up in the anti-drug hysteria because we ourselves might need these drugs someday.

Case in point: I bought a townhouse last May but couldn't move in until October because I'd seriously injured my back carrying boxes up steps. I used to do this ten times over when I was moving in and out of my college dorm. So I thought "It'll be just like college!"

It was not like college. One day I got up from a chair and my leg felt like it was on fire. I could no longer walk. I actually needed to use a nearby baseball bat as a makeshift cane just to get up. I'd apparently herniated a disc and it affected both my back and right leg and it took months to fully heal.

At this point, all of you will probably think: "Well, I'll bet your body was out of shape and you don't exercise." Nope. I'm only 20 lbs. heavier than I was in high school, run treadmill three or four times a week, and lift weights regularly.

But you can't trick Father Time once you hit 40. The only thing that saved me from taking pain pills is that I planned out my life to the point where after age 40 I am able to control my work schedule and take time off if I choose. So, I basically laid on the couch and took only Motrin.

But this would not have been the case if I'd have a bunch of kids and needed to make mortgage payments. What would have happened if I was forced to commute to work?

As for Petty and Prince, from what I gather from music industry people, neither were drug fiends. But both injured their hips, yet insisted on keeping a full schedule, which is insane.

This is what did them in. The only way to carry on was massive drug intake and these drugs are toxic. Had they just said "Hm. Think I'll take a nice long vacation," they'd have likely pulled through. Maybe this is the reason ex-Beatles McCartney and Ringo seem fine. They tour but take years off to chill. They know balance.

I once interviewed Nils Lofgren, who was known for his gymnastic backflips on stage. He'd just had a hip replacement and his words to me were: Pray you never have hip problems. So, those are my words for everyone here.

I sympathize with the rock star, to some degree. Imagine playing a show to 20,000 fanatical fans. And then you see 10,000 adoring women, fighting for the chance to drain your balls after the show. What are you going to do after the concert to keep the party going? Chamomile tea? Hardly. Given the scenario, it must be far too easy to develop a nasty drug habit.

It's surprising that these rock stars live as long as they do.

I regret never seeing him. His music was the soundtrack to my life. I don't care that he died this way, he lived the lifetime of 500 men and had to keep it going. I can't imagine how burned out you would be at his age, still playing shows and touring right until he died. Just wish I would have seen him play at least once.

Petty was a huge Elvis fan, there was a good show on Elvis Radio paying tribute to Petty and they played some of their songs and influences. I always loved how he flipped this Elvis song...I got lucky, into You Got Lucky
