If you are really trying to treat the young lad, you can do Disney with him and then you (Kona) can spend your nights trying to game the tourists. There are a lot of Europeans in Orlando during September so you might be able to procure some otherwise obscure flags.
Florida, however, may not give you the best view of what the American public is. You would get a better version of that further up the coast on the East side.

As previously mentioned, there may not be enough child focused activities for him to do.

Haha, I was in the fifth grade, but I am not insinuating this in the slightest bit.

What I am trying, and maybe failed to say, is that kids this age, before they can appreciate natures beauty, history, museums, architecture, etc, are into stuff that kids are into, i.e. places where there are other kids. I know because I have one this age. Places like the 3rd st promenade in Santa Monica, Times Sq, Washington DC, amusement parks, beaches etc. And if you are planning a tour to the US, why not see the biggest, most memorable things first?

I guess there is some value in making kids do boring/adulty things on vacation, making your kids go to a museum, historical sites, etc. To instill in them that its important. I make mine go to the museum often and she hates it now but still goes in and always gets into it, because I've been taking her since she was 2. I loved the Boulder recommendation, we go skiing/hiking/fishing every year. But with your nephew, seeing the US for the first time, go big, go see the most memorial stuff that he will remember and be able to tell his friends about.

If I were in your shoes, I'd drop any Vegas ideas. What's an 11-year-old going to do in Vegas? Buy bottle service at Chuck E. Cheese? At that point, it's basically a theme park.

You can't go wrong with New York, though. Make sure you take him out in the Village one night so he can see the less touristy side of the city, split a pizza, show him the Washington Square Arch, and teach him how to spit game at NYU girls. If you're heading south to Washington and Colonial Williamsburg anyway, why not take him all the way on down to Charleston? Epic road trip, point out Roanoke on the way.

Kid's got a pretty cool uncle putting all this together for him.

Mahalo once more for the advice...

Turns out gallery passes for congress/senate are really easy to get. I called (((Senator Brian Schatz's ))) office today, and they are fedexing all kinds of stuff.

Its coming together.

Maine is pretty awesome. Hit up the coast and have a lobster.

Surprised no one has mentioned New Orleans. It's worth a visit just for all the weird food.

You want to know the only thing you can assume about a broken down old man? It's that he's a survivor.

Tomorrow I will wake up in America. NYC to be exact.

I decided to make the first flight a long, one that would be on time. I figure travelling with a kid, the tone of the entire trip could get destroyed by some flight delay or airport bullshit.

We'll be in NYC until Thursday, then taking a speedy train to DC. Then driving to Norfolk .

After Norfolk we fly to the belly of the beast, Portland OR, because I got work related shit.

Thanks again for all the advice.

Aloha!

Not out of the realm of possibility. Went there for my stepdad's 32nd birthday (I was 12 at the time mrgreen)

RE: My nephew has never been to America. Where should I take him?
Day one is over, and so far we've had a blast. If you travel long distances with a kid, get the lay down seats. Great idea. We woke up, and were here.

Tomorrow, well today, were supposed to go to the jets game, unless weather makes make that pointless.

Got a great hotel. First thing when I unpacked was set out some binoculars for sight seeing reasons. I hear my little nephew yelling "this girl is showing her boobs" a few minutes later. First thing he did was start looking right into other hotel rooms.

At dinner I asked his first impression, and his response was fantastic. "I can't believe how many white people there are!"

Wish me luck.

Aloha!
