In my younger years I probably would have intervened as well. Not anymore.

Somewhere in this forum I typed it up, but can't find it. I kind of forget the details, but basically a while back I was somewhere and saw a dude smacking some lady around. I got all high and mighty and wound up rolling on the ground with the dude.

Magically a cop pulled up when I was on top of him. After he established who was who, the woman pointed right at me and yelled "that guy attacked me" and I just sunk. Nothing came of it, and the cop didn't believe her, but still it could have really gone sour.

I say the first thing you do is look for an authority figure to intervene. If that fails call the cops. Only with someone els to help would I get involved.

I'm not saying ignore situations, just put some thought into it first.

I'm from Portland (not there anymore). I blame the people who who let more and more deranged homeless people into the city. We have a place in downtown called "dignity village" that's all for them; they took it during that Occupy Central nonsense back in 2011.

Addendum to my exceptions in the previous post thanks to Kona.

3) Where the dispute is of a domestic nature do not intervene no matter how bad things are getting. Call the police and clear bystanders away. The woman he's just stabbed will toss the knife at your feet and claim to the authorities that you cold-cocked her man in the back of the head then knifed her in the guts.

He did get shot in the face some years ago by the police during a robbery. That might mess with his symmetry a little bit, you can see on the one side where it looks like he took the hit.

I once dated a girl who took pride in the fact that she "took no crap" and would frequently pick fights in public over the smallest "disrespect." It annoyed the hell out of me, I'm far more laid back and am not about to add unnecessary stress to life by worrying about strangers, but I didn't want to seem like a coward, so I just went along with it. Moral of the story: There are people out there far crazier than you are, with far less to lose, willing to go to far more extremes. Avoid unnecessary confrontations at all (reasonable) costs.

In my younger days I would have been all over the alleged attacker. Not in this day and age.

About two years ago I saw some cracked out looking man smacking around a cracked out looking woman. I got in the middle and stopped it. Right when the cops happened to get there, with the guy laying on the ground, the crackwoman yells "This guy attacked us" and pointed at me. The cop saw through it, and nothing happened, but I've been in way too many situations just like that.

If I see something I know is off, like the person getting attacked is a friend or family member, or it's just outrageously obvious, then a different story.

But the woman in the brown coat with the kids at the beginning clearly made the first move, all be it small. You never know with something like that. It could be the baby's daddy, or something like that.

I do hear Swedish jail is nice but Honolulu sucks, so never again for me.

Let me throw in a few cents to the mix.

Since I lived in various countries USA, Western Europe, now recently Eastern Europe - I can tell you this.

In the past Western Europe used to be much safer than both EE or the US.

Now I would say that the US has the toughest lifestyle of all. You can be in a nice business district and suddenly next street a crazy bum on crack approaches you erratically. Entire districts look like that where you have to take immense precautions and keep your eyes and ears open.

Now in Western Europe it has become a lot less safe due to all the diversity, but also drugs seeping in and unemployment rising. Tempers in Europe are not that high as in the US since the welfare system and unemployment benefits do help people out. Also health insurance does not bankrupt folk. The US is brutal in that respect especially for men. Then you have the divorce corp and other issues added and you have a strange society that is equally wealthy, but also extremely unstable.

The funny thing is that Poland where I live now is now the most sane place of all, it is also the most quiet and safe. Yes - there are poor people, but since the cost basis is so low, the bums can make a living doing odd-jobs and collecting the little social security they have. Germany for example has begun to have more visible poverty despite people making far more money. The US is even more extreme. It takes little to rise in Poland from the underclass to the middle class. All it takes is some 2 years of hard work, of laboring either in EE or taking brief work stays in Western Europe and suddenly you are in full middle-class territory or at least low-tier working class. In the US people work 3 jobs and still are working poor.

This did not use to be that way since I used to travel in the US in the 1980s as a kid with my family (also went to school there for a time).

AS for the topic at hand - it is related. If a bum threatens a woman in Poland, there is no shortage of man willing to defend a woman and step in. It is a saner, more uniform, safer and high-trust society. Western Europe has already become lower-trust and the US is in many areas already low-trust (with large notable exceptions of course). So in return that means - the saner the general society and population is, the more inclined are men to intervene on behalf of women and protect others. The more this high trust erodes, the less advisable it becomes to get involved except in very dire circumstances of course.

Women due to their lack of awareness of their privilege as a protected sex coupled with feminist moxy assume that if they talk back to an aggressive druggie, then he will back off and she will have won the day. We know better and the incident with the White Knights there also should have taught them better. They thought that they are in a high-trust sane society, but that train left quite some time ago.

But who knows .... maybe it will get there again. History comes in cycles.

This is like the opposite of a Potemkin village. Make things look as bad as possible to outsiders as a sign of superior virtue.

It is also pure Oregon.

The Oregon city where I live has a homeless dinner place where they act like it is a restaurant and the people who come for a meal are customers.

They even have a bouncer type guy out front to keep homeless people from hurting each other.

The kicker is, when people are done with their meal, they wander away and hang out in the doorways and under the awnings of the local businesses, scaring away customers and leaving all sorts of garbage in their wake.

And the homeless diner does nothing about it. They don't care, in fact, they seem even to get off on the fact that they are making things harder for community members nearby.

It would be so easy for them to send their bouncer dude over to the businesses and ask people to respect the businesses and move along after their meal.

They don't do it though. I saw an interview with the lady who runs the place on tv when she was interviewed by a news crew about the problem.

You should have seen the level of satisfaction and smugness in her face when she was told how it was hurting businesses. It was like she was getting off on it. She had stuff to say about dignity for the homeless, and how she would never stop advocating. On and on.

You don't see this same attitude with local Christian charities by the way. They seem to want to help people and be good neighbors too.

It is only the feral lefties who seem like they have an ax to grind with society, who seem to hate business and any form of entrepreneurial aspiration. Oh how she lorded it all in that interview.

The downtrodden were just her proxy warriors against western civilization. She was free to give her schadenfreude wings as long as she could claim altruism. It made anyone with a gripe seem like they hate the homeless.

The writer Jay Dyer calls this "humanitarian cover." A useful term, I think. There are a lot of psychos taking refuge there.
