A note: Taiwan's low birth rates are less a result of Western-style SJWism and more an effect of the rising cost of living, stagnant wages, and out-of-control speculative housing prices. Traditional Taiwanese parents often want a bride price and for the husband to provide a house and car to get married. However, for guys (college grads) making NT$30,000 a month, buying a house in Taipei is more like a pipe-dream. The ones who do are either rich, or have been saving like mad since they were in high school and get into a 30-year mortgage. Housing is a bit cheaper in other parts of the island, but not by a lot. We're talking US$450,000+ for a halfway decent two-bedroom apartment in Taipei. Forget an actual house like we think of in the West.

Because the main issues of the election were:
A) their economy
B) Taiwanese identity

The Kuomintang (KMT), the prior ruling party that consists of Chinese Nationalists that fled to Taiwan after being defeated by Chairman Mao's Communists during the Chinese Civil War, had basically always ruled the nation except for 8 years in the early 2000s.

The previous president, Ma Ying-Jeou, had gotten too cozy with China, both economically and politically. Taiwan is economically and politically isolated from the world and their biggest trade partner is China -- while wages have stagnated for the last 20 years. The last thing the people there want is to be poor AND to be taken over by the Chinese.

In short, it was more of a rejection of the ruling party and status quo, much like how our compadre DJT took advantage of that in order to Make America Great Again.

Exactly, the way it works is that people pray to their gods (Guan Du, Guan Yin, Matsu) to give them stuff and then read Confucius for ethics and morality, which largely consists of obeying anyone above you in rank and age. I understand that Confucius taught the golden rule, but I don't know if it's actually stressed much anymore. In any case, there seems to be little effort on many people's parts to change themselves.

The great irony out of all this Taoist silliness is that Lao Tzu himself said not to make a religion out of his teachings. The Tao Teh Ching is a fantastic book by the way (read the John C.H. Wu translation) but most people here think of him as being too "sideways." Confucius is essentially the Vogon teacher for the borg hivemind.

This is $1260 per SQ.M. Whereas in Batumi where I was looking at real estate it was $1,000 - $1,200 per SQ.M to get a turnkey / move in ready apartment in a new building.

Thing is most non-Asian foreigners don't want to live in Asia because there's zero chance of integrating and you're kind of forced to marry a local for long term residency. Taiwanese girls too I noticed are mostly unattractive (very few Kpop style girls here and the number is going to decline more because Taiwan is the most SJW among Asian countries).

I do find it ironic how people think an influx of money will change Taiwan for the better. Mainland China is "rich" as hell but the culture has yet to catch up.

Wealthy Chinese remind me of hood rich Blacks. The similarities are almost startling. However, that's a topic for another discussion.

I actually think an injection of Taiwanese culture would greatly improve some of the worst traits in the mainland.

People here throw trash on the ground without a thought and fuck each other over fun. I love living on the mainland, but I'd prefer it if mainland China didn't chinesify its neighbors.
